SUCCINCT SUMMARY
----------------
One of Rashis 10 main goals is to give the meaning of
words the same way the dictionary gives meaning. We
call this the Rashi method of WORD MEANING.

Rashi had a variety of vehicles to present meaning.
Rashi frequently explained MULTI-WORD IDIOMS. An IDIOM
occurs when 1 or more words form a NEW MEANING not
directly equal to the meaning of the constituent words
of the IDIOM. We call this the SUBRULE of NEW MEANINGS
since the words acquire new meanings.

In acquiring NEW MEANINGS Rashi frequently used a
universal principle of all languages---METONOMY.
METONOMY refers to the capacity to name an item
by a related item (such as naming a PEOPLE, Americans,
by the LAND they live in, America)

EXAMPLE 1: Ex30-34f
-------------------
Ex30-34 states
----------------------------------
Take SPICES
- Nataf Spice
- Shechayleth Spice
- Chelbenah spice
SPICES
and pure Levanah spice
BY-ITSELF BY-ITSELF will it be
----------------------------------

Rashi explains the IDIOMATIC phrase
-----------------------------------
BY-ITSELF BY-ITSELF is an IDIOM
meaning that each of the enumerated
spices has EQUAL MEASURE
-----------------------------------

Rashi offers some possible insights on
why the phrase BY-ITSELF BY-ITSELF should
have this idiomatic meaning but the bottom
line is that this phrase is an IDIOM with
a NEW MEANING that transcends the meaning
of the individual words.

Finally LIST871d presents these and
other IDIOMS based on metonomy

COMMENTS
*1 Many examples in this list come from previous
list in the metonomy series (LIST871a,
LIST871b, LIST871c)

*2 See LIST871e for 6 Rashis mentioning this HAND=DOMAIN
theme

*3 See LIST871f for verses where NSA means GIFT

*4 Rashi citing the Midrash Rabbah states
-------------------------------------
Your violence is something you VIOLATED
from Esauv (You are killing like Esauv)
-------------------------------------

But I see no reason to see this Midrash
as the PRIMARY simple meaning of the
verse. The PRIMARY meaning of the verse
is that Shimon and Levi were criminals
The Midrash is simply adding a pun to this
observation.

*5 See LIST871g for some examples

*6 This is a common metonomy that occurs in English
(eg America-Americans etc).

Rashi is cute here: He EXPLAINS the metonomy
----------------------------------------------
When the soldiers die at sea their loved ones
back in Egypt also suffer and in effect are
smitten by God
----------------------------------------------
Rashi does not contradict the metonomy--he
simply shows why it is convenient to identify
the LAND and PEOPLE.

*7 The night was traditionally divided into three
times of Guard duty. The GUARD DUTY near dawn
was called the MORNING WATCH (Cf Ju07-19 for
confirmation that there was a BEGINNING WATCH, MIDDLE
WATCH and DAWN WATCH)

*8 The phrases SEEK GOD, SEEK IN GOD, occur in several
verses and denote SEEKING ADVICE OF GOD. Compare for
example (1S09-09, 1K22-08 or even 2K01-03 (Seeking
advice of idolatrous gods). For alternate meanings
see note *10.

*9 The exact verse text is
--------------------------------------------------
You will have to remove the old grain for the new
--------------------------------------------------
This means
---------------------
You will have plenty
---------------------

In other words removal of the OLD for the NEW
is simply something RELATED to PLENTY. The main
theme is plenty.

Similarly the Biblical text
------------------------------------------------------
The threshing season will bump into the harvest season
------------------------------------------------------
means
--------------------
you will have plenty
--------------------
Again the fact that we are STILL threshing when the
harvest comes is something RELATED to having plenty.
The main point is that there is PLENTY.

LONGER FOOTNOTES

*10 On Gn25-22e there is a delightful Ramban Rashi controversy
Ramban points out that SEEK GOD can mean PRAYER. Rashi
holds it means PROPHETIC ADVICE. I brought about a dozen
verses which clearly show that
- SEEK GOD can and does refer to PRAYER
- SEEK GOD can and does refer to PROPHETIC ADVICE
- SEEK GOD can and does refer to BOTH Prayer/Prophecy
Hence I regard Ramban not as disagreeing with Rashi but
rather as complementing him. For further details see
http://www.Rashiyomi.com/gn25-22d.htm

*11 Clearly the Hebrew YeeChad comes from the root CHAD
which means SHARP. Rashi brings two opinions
- It means HE SHARPED (Mirthed at a SHARP WORD)
- It means HE TWINGED (Upset at PAINFUL news)

But Radack brings STRONG support that CHAD means
mirth. Indeed, in other verses, CHAD does mean
MIRTH (As in eg Neh08-10 or P021-07).

This controversy between Rashi and Radack
can be resolved Grammatically. The grammatical
form of VaYeeChad (Chirik, Patach) could come from
either
- INTENSE MODE of 1-2-Hey roots(Cheth-Daleth-Hey) or
- PASSIVE MODE of 1-2-2 roots(Cheth-Daleth-Daleth)

In the intense mode CHAD means MIRTH(Radack)

But in the PASSIVE MODE it would correspond to
RECEIVING (PASSIVE!) a SHARP twinge at hearing
bad news.

Hence the controversy is on the root and mode
of the word.

This explanation makes both viewpoints respectable
since Rashi would concede that CHEDVAH which
definitely comes from Cheth-Daleth-Hey means
MIRTH; Rashi could still maintain that Yee-Chad
means TWINGED since it comes from a different root

Rashi also points out that the translation
TWINGED would show that despite Jethros
happiness he still felt sorry for the Egyptians
thus showing the conflict between his past(non-jew)
and future (friend of Jews)

*12 AFTERNOON-LIGHT-OIL is an example of DOUBLE METONOMY
See LIST871c for other examples.

*13 Although Rashi comments on the phrase OIL-OLIVES the
phrase does not occur in Dt28-02b. This is obviously
a scribal error. (See sifsay Chachamim who "explains"
why the Rashi comments differ in the two verses. My
point of view is that Rashi is stating the same thing
and through a scribal error the Rashi was erroneously
repeated in Dt28-02b.

*14 The Hebrew root used is Nun-Pay-Lamed.
One naiive translation is FALL.
But EVEN if we translate this way we have Rashi reading
-------------------------------------------------
RASHI: She FELL AT SIGHT OF HIM--this means
----- She Fell in love with him at first sight
-------------------------------------------------

But Rashi goes deeper. Most people falling in love
do not fall down. Rather they feel dizzy and perhaps
sway. Rashi (as does the Radack) points out that
--------------------------------------------------
Nun-Pay-Lamed has a basic meaning of FALL. However
it can mean ANY RELATED meaning (METONOMY!).
Radack brings as examples
- sway
- being secondary
- military swoop on a camp
- to barge in on guests
--------------------------------------------------

Many other examples are given. For this reason we
have simply translated the Rashi as saying that
SWAY AT SIGHT = LOVE AT FIRST SIGHT.

*15 Certain IDIOMS represent NEW MEANING by
- FORM (e.g. HEART of FIRE=MIDST of FIRE)
- or FUNCTION (e.g. your MOUTH=your SPOKESMAN)
See
- LIST810b
- LIST810c
- LIST813a
- LIST815a

*16 Lv25-08:10 states that
----------------------------------------
Every 50 years is a JUBILEE year
The SHOFAR is sounded
and people and property are FREE
----------------------------------------

Here we see JUBILEE, SHOFAR and FREE
related. Hence the METONOMY principle
allows us to refer use the word JUBILEE
to refer to the SHOFAR.

*17 The complete Biblical texts and the
complete Rashis are as follows.
-VOICE OF BRAVERY REFRAIN means a MILITARY CRY
(e.g. WE WON with the crowd responding WE WON)
-VOICE OF WEAKNESS REFRAIN means a DEATH CRY
(e.g. OH MY GOD with the crowd responding OH MY GOD)
-VOICE OF REFRAIN means a BRAWL
(e.g. where a crowd tortures someone and hypnotically
refrains a torturer cry, the point being the crowd
acts as a crowd without any individuals)

*18
Ex30-34 states
----------------------------------

- Nataf Spice
- Shechayleth Spice
- Chelbenah spice

and pure Levanah spice
BY-ITSELF BY-ITSELF will it be
----------------------------------

Rashi explains the IDIOMATIC phrase
-----------------------------------
BY-ITSELF BY-ITSELF is an IDIOM
meaning that each of the enumerated
spices has EQUAL MEASURE

Rashi offers some possible insights on
why the phrase BY-ITSELF BY-ITSELF should
have this idiomatic meaning but the bottom

a NEW MEANING that transcends the meaning
of the individual words.

SUCCINCT SUMMARY
----------------
One of Rashis 10 main tasks is to explain
GRAMMAR the same way modern Hebrew books
explain GRAMMAR. We call this the Rashi GRAMMAR rule.
Rashi had three broad sub-rules in explaining GRAMMAR

(1) A major component of Hebrew GRAMMAR are the rules
governing conjugations of VERBS, or HEBREW ROOTS.
There are 7 grammatical modes with half a dozen
parameters: tense, person, gender, plurality,
connective words...

(2) Another component of GRAMMAR deals with
PREFIXES-SUFFIXES and other letters, or small words,
that indicate changes in meanings. This PREFIX-SUFFIX
subrule includes the rules governing the rules of
plural, gender, pronouns etc. We are still making
discoveries of PREFIX-SUFFIX rules today.

(3) Finally a more advanced part of GRAMMAR deals
with the rules of entire SENTENCES. The SENTENCE
rules includes the rules governing sentence order,
apposition, and compound sentences

Today we deal with the following rule governing
adverbial modifiers of verbs
--------------------------------------------------------
The adverbial phrase FOR YOU indicates doing an activity
for personal reasons.
--------------------------------------------------------
A similar parallel rule does not exist in English.
Here are some examples.

EXAMPLE 1: Nu27-18b pick FOR YOURSELF Joshua
RASHI: Moses PERSONALLY knew Joshua

EXAMPLE 2: Nu13-02b: Send FOR YOURSELF spies
RASHI: Send if YOU WANT TO

EXAMPLE 3: Ex25-08a Make FOR ME a Temple
RASHI: Specifically DEDICATE it to God

EXAMPLE 4: Ex25-02a Take for ME Temple Gifts
RASHI: Specifically DEDICATE it to God

EXAMPLE 5: Ex18-27a He went FOR HIMSELF to his land
RASHI: He went for PERSONAL reasons (He founded a society
devoted to serving God)

EXAMPLE 6: Nu10-02a,b Make FOR YOURSELF trumpets
RASHI: PERSONAL Trumpets (No one else will use them)
RASHI: PERSONAL trumpets (made from your own funds)
RASHI: PERSONAL trumpets (People will Trumpet only for you)

EXAMPLE 7: Gn32-32a The sun ROSE FOR JACOB after Peniayl
RASHI: It was a cloudy period; but the sun shone early
that day since he was limping and needed the warmth.

EXAMPLE 8: Egypt cried/mourned FOR HIM(Jacob)
RASHI: Jacob did Egypt a personal favor by cutting the
famine period from 7 years to 2 years--hence the mourning
was personal and focused on Jacob

EXAMPLE 9: The Burial plot I bought FOR MYSELF
RASHI: Esauv is genealogically the oldest. Although
Jacob received the blessings Esauv still had burial
rights in Chevron. Hence Jacob BOUGHT him off so he
could have the burial plot FOR HIMSELF.

EXAMPLE 10: (To Aaron) Take FOR YOURSELF a calf for
a sin offering to enter the Priesthood
RASHI: The calf was also personal--it atoned for
the GOLDEN CALF that Aaron had made.

EXAMPLE 11: (God to Moses) Carve FOR YOURSELF two tablets
RASHI: The GOLD SHAVINGS of the tablets will be yours
RASHI: You Moses broke the tablets so that the God Israel
relationship should not be stained by idolatry. Now that
they have been forgiven FOR YOURSELF, go and continue
what you started---reunite God-Israel by making two tablets

EXAMPLE 12: Lemech took FOR HIMSELF 2 wives
RASHI: One for children and one FOR HIMSELF (For sex)

EXAMPLE 13: She conceived FOR HIM a child
RASHI:The child was raised to be LIKE HIM (same
personality characteristics)

EXAMPLE 14: Give (to the poor) the missings missed FOR HIM
RASHI: Even personal needs such as a wife (If a poor person
is not married help him get married)

EXAMPLE 15: Prepare FOR YOURSELF the highway
RASHI: The signs should have REPEATED MESSAGES so that
if one copy of the message erodes from the weather the
other copy will be there FOR YOU (These signs pointed
the way to REFUGE cities for negligent murderers)

EXAMPLE 16: Let us(Egypt) prepare FOR THEM (the Jews)
RASHI: They studied the Jewish religion. God had promised
not to bring a flood on the world. Hence the Egyptians
thought they could 'get away' with killing Jewish babies
by hurling them in the Nile (So in this sense the
preparation for the Jews was PERSONAL, DIRECTED FOR THEM)

EXAMPLE 17: If you build FOR ME an Altar
RASHI: Dedicate the Altar for me.

EXAMPLE 18: The King should not have excessive money FOR HIM
RASHI: That is no EXCESS PERSONAL funds; However the King
may have sufficient funds to entertain Royal guests in a
befitting manner.

EXAMPLE 19: Travel FOR YOURSELF from your land(God to Abraham)
RASHI: The travel is not just an order but rather you will
benefit---you will acquire wealth and independence

EXAMPLE 20: Make PERFUME SACRIFICES that are HOLY FOR GOD.
RASHI: The phrase FOR GOD means that the perfumes
must BE MADE AND DEDICATED to GOD.

EXAMPLE 21: Observe the Sabbath as a HOLY DAY TO GOD.
RASHI: Its observance should be FOR THE SAKE OF GODs
will.

Note that any one of these Rashis might appear, by itself,
as homiletic. But the rules taken together create a list
which justifies the rule.

COMMENTS
*1 He founded a Society of God which is alluded to in Judges
He didn't just return home but returned home FOR HIMSELF.
He had goals and ambitions--he founded a SOCIETY FOR BELIEF
IN GOD based on what he learned from his son in law Moses.

*2 Rashi gives 3 explanations/illustrations of personal use
- from your money
- your trumpets (no one else can use them)
- they will trumpet before you as a sign of honor

*3 Jacob was limping; the fast sun-rise gave warmth which
facilitated his recovery.

*4 Here they use the word OTHO vs LO but the concept is
the same. As show in the reference below JACOB caused
the famine to stop. Therefore Egypt did not mourn Jacob
BECAUSE he was the father of the prime minister but rather
mourned him BECAUSE of the good he did for Egypt.

REFERENCE: http://www.RashiYomi.com/gn47-19a.htm

*5 Rashi makes some etymological comments about the root
Caph-Resh-Hey which usually means DIG but can also mean BUY.
Radack in fact gives other verses where Caph-Resh-Hey means
BUY. The emphasis BUY FOR MYSELF connotes a PERSONAL aspect
Recall Esauv was the ELDEST and Jacob 'bought' the birthright
However Esauv might still want burial rights with the
Patriarchs so it is reasonable that Jacob 'bought' Esauv out

*6 Moses broke the Tablets because the Jews were worshipping
idols and he didn't want to ruin the God Israel relationship
Now that Israel was forgiven God invites Moses to continue
what he started and carve new tablets to reunite God Israel

*7 In case of accidental erasure of one copy of the
repeated message from weather the other, repeated,
message would stay

*8 In preparing to OUTSMART the Jews the Egyptians studied
the Jewish religion and decided that since God couldn't
bring a flood on the whole world (God promised not to)
therefore they could 'get away' with throwing Jewish
babies in the Nile.

*9 This is an admonition to the King. The King may not
have excessive funds FOR HIMSELF. Hence
- he may not have excessive PERSONAL funds
- but he may have personal funds to entertain royal
guests and visits.

SUCCINCT SUMMARY:
-----------------
One of Rashi's 10 major goals is the explanation of GRAMMAR
the same way modern textbooks explain GRAMMAR. There are three
major GRAMMAR submethods:

(a) The goal of the ROOT submethod is to explain all
conjugations and meanings of Biblical roots.
Biblical roots are conjugated with letter prefixes and suffixes
to indicate (i) tense (ii) person (iii) gender (iv) plurality
(v) mode (vi) object (to whom the activity is done) and (vii)
mood. Each of these conjugations has a specific meaning.
Furthermore, these conjugations take on different forms for
roots with weak letters.

(b) The SENTENCE submethod deals with grammatical attributes
of sentences such as (i) word arrangement (Verb Subject vs
Subject Verb) (ii) sentence type (interrogative, command)
(iii) compound sentences (iv) apposition and (v)
paragraph / sentence development.

(c) The MISCELLANEOUS grammatical methods deal with
(i) agreement (in gender and plurality), (ii) the construct
(iii) pronoun reference (iv) ellipsis (v) noun-verb transforms
(e.g. to dust) (vi) special word usage(e.g. how to use
numbers) (vii) suffix-prefixes (e.g. terminal HEY means
towards).

EXAMPLE 1: Gn29-27b
-------------------
In Gn29-27 there is discussion of allowing
Jacob to marry Leah. Laban consents to Jacob
working another 7 years to obtain Leah. He could
not marry her at first because the town custom is
to marry off the younger daughter first. Gn29-27 states
----------------------------------------------------
Work 7 more years
and WE [that is I, Laban] will give you Leah
-----------------------------------------------------

The plural in these verses refers to ONE PERSON
who however is referred to in the plural...
The idea of a PLURAL reference to a SINGULAR person
is that the person does not act by himself but rather
consults with their STAFF.

For example when Laban said WE WILL GIVE YOU LEAH
even though it means I (LABAN) WILL GIVE YOU LEAH,
the PLURAL WE refers to Laban's staff with whom
he consulted.

We colloquially refer to this as the ROYAL WE.

EXAMPLE 2: Ex32-01b
--------------------
There are exceptions were the PLURAL is used
when we expect a singular AND there is no ROYAL
we. For example, in the discussion of building
the Golden calf we read in Ex32-01
-------------------------------------------
We want to make an idolatrous godS
who will WALK (Plural) before us
-------------------------------------------

There is no justification of the ROYAL WE
here. Hence the Rashi
-----------------------------------
Even though they made one golden idol
they nevertheless wanted MANY idols--
a pantheon of godS which would guide them
-----------------------------------

LIST003d below contains several verses
where the ROYAL WE is used.Exception verses
are also presented.

*1 The plural in these verses refers to ONE PERSON

The idea of a PLURAL reference to a SINGULAR person

For example when Laban said WE WILL GIVE YOU LEAH

*2 There is no ROYAL WE in these verses...hence
we interpret the PLURAL literally
- Sarah nursed MANY children...so besides Isaac
she nursed the other children who came

SUCCINCT SUMMARY
----------------
Rashi will very often take a verse whose
meaning is ALREADY understood and ADD a consequence
to the verse. We call this the SPREADSHEET
method since SPREADSHEETS are very often
used to derive consequences of otherwise
understood data. We also classify Rashis
as using the SPREADSHEET method when Rashi
gives COMPUTATIONAL or GEOMETRIC diagrams
to clarify the meaning of the verse.

EXAMPLE Ex32-15a
------------------
Ex32-15 states
---------------------------------------------
The 10 commandments on the 2 stones were
written ON BOTH SIDES ON THIS SIDE AND ON
THAT SIDE WERE THEY WRITTEN
---------------------------------------------

The 10 commandments were "written" on two
tablets of stone. The letters were BORED THRU
the tablets. So if we imagine the English version
of the 10 commandments I AM THE LORD THY GOD THAT
HAS TAKEN YOU OUT OF EGYPT we would have the
following letters
----------------------------------------
ORIENTATION SIDE POSITION I AM THE LORD
----------- ----- --------- -----------
Top Left 1 I
Top Left 2 space
Top Left 3 A
Top Left 4 M
-------- ----- -- -----
Bottom Right 1 I
Bottom Right 2 space
Bottom Right 3 A
Bottom Right 4 M
----------------------------------------

Thus the letters on the TOP did NOT correspond to the
letters on BOTTOM, since the "I" on top was on the
LEFT while the "I" on bottom was on the RIGHT.
Hence the "miracle" of the 10
commandments is that the HOLLOW LETTERS like Samech
and terminal Mem, the HOLLOW Letters on the top did not
correspond to similarl HOLLOW letters on the bottom;
Hence the HOLLOW letters held up in the stone tables
even though they were bored through because they did
not go all the way to the other side*10

The traditional explanation of the "miracle" is that
the Samech on Top/Bottom corresponded so that when
they were bored thru there was a narrow slab of stone
in the hollow that "floated in mid-air by miracle."

But this is not necessary---the miracle was that
the hollow letters on one side did not correspond to
the hollow letters on the other side and hence all
the letters stood.

LIST690a below presents other Rashis using the SPREADSHEET
principle. LIST690t summarizes the above argument.

COMMENTS
*1 Many people are familiar with the concept of the
FORMULA PLUG IN. That is a problem is solved by a
formula which you plug into.

But some problems intrinsically cannot (initally)
be solved by a formula. Instead you have to
formulate the problem algebraically and solve;only
then do you have the formula.

In other words these problems are solved by
the EQUATION vs the FORMULA

Thus the statement that the eldest gets double
suggests the following model.

- Suppose the are B brothers
- Suppose 1 of them is eldest
- The Fathers total assets are T (Total)

- Let A be the amount each brother inherits
We have no formula for A

- Then each of the B-1 brothers obtains A
- The eldest obtains double, 2A.
- Together this exhausts the Fathers estate, T

Hence we have (B-1)A + 2A = (B+1)A = T

This gives rise to the formula A = T / (B+1)

An example is a father with 100,000 and 4 children
- T=100,000
- B=4
- So each child take T/(B+1) = 100000/5 = 20,000
- Eldest takes 2*20000=40000
- Other 3 take 20000
- Total distribution =3*20000+40000=100000

See Rambam Inheritance Chapter 2

*2
Rashi gives a clarifying example to the verse GOD FORGIVES HER
--------------------------------------------------------------
- the women vowed to become a nazarite
- the husband annuled her vow
- but the husband did not tell her about the annulment
- the women then violated her vow
-
- In such a case God forgives the women (despite her
intending to commit a sin) because of the unknown
annulment of her husband
-
- We conclude that sin is an attribute of ACTION,not INTENT
--------------------------------------------------------------

*3 Recall that Pharoh ordered all male babys murdered.
Moses was not murdered when born but was kept
in hiding for 3 months. His mother put him in a box
floating on the Nile. When Pharoh's daughter found the
box Miryam, Moses sister, approached Pharoh's daughter
to ask if she wanted help from a Midwife.

If Miryam was a nobody this would have aroused suspicion
Why was she mysteriously appearing to offer help after
the baby was found.

Therefore Miryam was probably a professional midwife.
She could offer help without suspicion. Similarly
Yocheved must have been a midwife...she made her
living thru nursing and delivering so no body
would suspect her of being the mother.

This proof is not iron clad---but rather the
identification of Miryam and Yocheved as
midwives alleviates some of the "coincidences"
that happen in the story.

*4 The Egyptian magicians tried to bring
the LICE out FROM ELSEWHERE (So that
they could take credit for it) but could
not do so

*5
There is an old controversy whether
WITCHCRAFT is real or not. I have solved
this problem in an unpublished article

- WITCHCRAFT does NOT affect the real world
Hence in some sense it is NOT REAL

- WITCHCRAFT takes effect by using HALLUCINATIONS

It causes the recipient to SENSE THINGS that
are not there. For example a WITCH may make
a person believe that he sees FLYING ELEPHANTS

- - The witch has NOT PRODUCED flying elephants
- - But the witch HAS PRODUCED AN HALLUCINATION

In this sense witchcraft is PSYCHOLOGICALLY REAL.

Using this distinction we can understand why
the Egypitan WITCHES (= HALLUCINATION CREATORS)
were able to CREATE FROGS but not LICE.

FROGS are big and it is easy to make people
hallucinate them. LICE is minute. Rashi
explains that it is difficult to make
people HALLUCINATE minute objects...for this
reason the Egyptian witches could not produce
the lice. (And hence they had to recognize
Moses as a prophet vs a WITCH)

SUCCINT SUMMARY:
----------------
One of Rashis 10 main goals is the explanation of grammar
similar to the explanations we find in modern textbooks. We
call this the Rashi rule of GRAMMAR.

In todays posting we deal with the grammatical rules
governing DEVELOPMENT in paragraphs and chapters: Given
a paragraph or chapter THEME, what types of sentences can
exist in that paragraph or chapter and what are their
relations to the central theme? We call this the rashi
subrule of CONSECUTIVE PARAGRAPHS.

Rashi knew 4 means of relating consecutive sentences or
consecutive paragraphs in a paragraph or chapter:
- CAUSE
- CONTRAST
- ENABLEMENT
- UNIFYING THEME.
Today we study the CONTRAST and CAUSAL submethods.

EXAMPLE Ex33-08b
----------------
Verse Ex33-07 states that after the sin of the Golden calf
--------------------------------------------------
Moses would daily pitch his tent outside the
camp; anyone seeking God would go out to this tent
--------------------------------------------------

Verse Ex33-08 begins
-------------------------------------------------
When Moses left the camp...the people would
rise (in respect for him)
-------------------------------------------------

Rashi
---------------------------------------------
The phrase in Ex32-08
- - - - - - - - - - - - -
WHEN MOSES LEFT THE CAMP
- - - - - - - - - - - - -

was a CONTRIBUTING CAUSE or ENABLEMENT of the
phrase in Ex32-07
- - - - - - - - - - - - -
MOSES WOULD DAILY PITCH
THE TENT DAILY OUTSIDE THE CAMPE
- - - - - - - - - - - - -
---------------------------------------------

In other words Rashi relates the two CAPPED phrases
using the concept of CAUSE and ENABLEMENT Rashi
actually expresses this tersely as follows
-----------------------------------------
When Moses went out TO PITCH HIS TENT
-----------------------------------------

LIST061a below presents other paragraph sequences with

Lv10-02a Death of Aarons sons No wine to serving priest*3
Lv10-03d Death of Righteous God honored*4
Lv22-15a Dont eat Terumah Dont DESCECRATE holies
COMMENTS
*1 Thus "whoever see the humiliating Adulterous wife rite"
will be so shocked that he will abstain from wine

Similarly "Judah advised his brothers to sell Joseph"
and so when they regretted it they blaimed him and he
had to "separate from them."

Similarly "Sarah died" from the shock that "Abraham
offered Isaac."

*2 In other words because the snake saw Adam and Eve naked
therefore he became Jealous and wanted Adam killed so
he could marry Eve.

ALthough this sounds a bit wild there is strong supporting
evidence. Gn04-01 uses the past perfect form
And Adam HAD BEEN FAMILIAR with his wife & they had
a child"
So the sequence of chapters is
Adam was lonely
God makes Eve
Adam and Eve are naked
------------------------"Snake tempts Eve"
Adam has a child with Eve
Thus the sequence of chapters (Naked--->child) is
clearly interrupted by the Snake story.

*3 As explained above Rashi sees these two views as
complementary
- First they drank wine and got drunk
- While drunk they thought it permissable to offer
sacrifices which should not be offered
Hence they died for both crimes

*4 Rashi explains the Causal connection
- when the masses see that God EVEN kills the righteous
for sins
- then they are aware how they must also observe
Gods commandments
- This leads to more honor for God

*5 So GOOD NEWS facilitates/causes SMOOTH TRAVEL(Rashi)

*6 The full sequence of chapters is as follows
--------------------------------------------
- Gn31 God orders Jacob to return to his fathers house
- Gn32 But Jacob is afraid of Being with Brother Esauv
- Gn33 Jacob journeys instead to Succoth
- Gn34 Dinah gets raped
- Gn35 God tells Jacob to return to BethEl
-------------------------------------------

Rashi notes that
-----------------------------
If Jacob had IMMEDIATELY fulfilled the order
of Travelling to his fathers house he
wouldnt have stayed in Succoth and his
Daughter would not have gotten raped.
------------------------------

Thus Rashi sees a CAUSAL connection
between the chapters. Dinah was raped
because Jacob did not IMMEDIATELY fulfill
the prophetic order.

Note Rashi expresses the same theme
-------------------------------------------------
Because he delayed doing the prophecy immediately
therefore he was punished that certain bad
occurrences happened to him
-------------------------------------------------

Rashi expresses this same theme on Gn35-22a
where we find that Reuven inteferred with his
fathers marital life.

*7 Rashi can be better understood with the EXPORT-IMPORT LAW
of logic. The EXPORT-IMPORT law states that
----------------------------------------------------
IF [it rains] then if [I go out] THEN [I will get wet]
----------------------------------------------------

has the same meaning as
----------------------------------------------------
IF [it rains] and [I go out] THEN [I will get wet]
----------------------------------------------------

In other words Rashi identifies the two sentence forms
- IF p THEN IF q THEN r
- IF p & q THEN r
This identification of NESTED CONDITIONALS with a
CONJUNCTIVE HYPOTHESIS is called the EXPORT-IMPORT law.

The actual Biblical text reads
---------------------------------------------
The cattle is young
AND they will be pushed one day
AND they will die
---------------------------------------------

Rashi simply points out (Using EXPORT-IMPORT) that
we can interpret this as either
---------------------------------------------
[IF] The cattle is young
AND they will be pushed one day
THEN they will die
---------------------------------------------
or
---------------------------------------------
IF The cattle is young
IF they will be pushed one day
THEN they will die
---------------------------------------------

The above two translations use the well known Biblical
principle that the Hebrew letter VAV can refer to
any connective.

*8 In other words he
- 1st affirmed a vow of his wife
- then annuled it (which he had no right to)
- If she now sins (Because she was mislead into thinking
the vow is annuled)
- then HE bears the sin/punishment
In other words BECAUSE he misled her he must pay for
the sin.

*9 The causality of these verses reinforce each other
- Gn13-14 EXPLICITLY states that God promised Abe
Israel AFTER Lot separated from him

- Gn13-07 states that Abe and Lot faught WHILE
the Canaanites were still in the land.

So Rashi simply puts the two verses together
- Lot felt HE COULD USE ISRAEL land even though the
CANAANITES still owned it. Lot felt this way because
the land was promised to Abraham eventually. By contrast
Abraham refused to use the land UNTIL it was actually
given to him.

LONGER FOOTNOTES

*10 Rashi also states
--------------------------------------------------
The HEAVY DRIVING (that God made the Egyptians do
by removing chariot wheel) was a punishment for
their making HEAVY their hearts
--------------------------------------------------

I would strengthen these associations
--------------------------------------------------
The HEAVY DRIVING is a punishment for the HEAVY
work that the Egyptians placed on the Jews
--------------------------------------------------

These comments of Rashi or me also indicate
-- HEAVY DRIVING causes/facilitated
-- Egyptians seeing that God was fighting for them

Indeed: We know that one of the way God fights
is to punish people according to what they have done
(See Rashi on Ex18-11- Jethro said: Now I know that
God is the true God because He returns to people
what they have done)

Hence this particular punishment (making the
Egyptians drive heavy vs killing them) showed
the Egyptians (CAUSED them to be aware) that
God was fighting.

*11 Hence the Rashi
- Laban was interested in the possibility of becoming
rich from Abraham.

*12 Presumably each city had its own method of preserving
food (e.g. use natural nutrients in the fields).
Hence the second sentence of the verse HE STORED EACH
CITIES FOOD NEAR IT is seen as ENABLING the first
sentence HE STORED THE FOOD OF THE SEVEN YEARS
