SUCCINCT SUMMARY ---------------- A powerful but simple Rashi method is the CITATION or CROSS- REFERENCING of an OTHER VERSE for the purpose of adding FURTHER DETAILS to a verse we are studying. We call this the OTHER VERSE method. There are three submethods to the OTHER VERSE method. If the verse actually CITES or refers to an OTHER VERSE we call this the SUBMETHOD of CITATION. If the OTHER VERSE explains the meaning of some term in the first verse we call this the SUBMETHOD of MEANING. If the first verse does not cite an other verse and if no meaning is explained then we call this the SUBMETHOD of FURTHER DETAILS since the 2nd verse either confirms the first verse or typically adds FURTHER DETAILS to the first verse EXAMPLE 1: Lv05-18a ------------------- Verse Lv05-16 and Lv05-18 state ---------------------------------------------- He brings a guilt offering:an ASSESSED ram worth 2 silver shekel He brings a guilt offering:an ASSESSED ram ---------------------------------------------- Rashi ---------------------------------- The numerical specification of the word ASSESSED in Lv05-18 is illuminated by the OTHER VERSE, Lv05-16, which explicitly spells out that the ASSESSMENT is 2 SILVER SHEKEL ---------------------------------- EXAMPLES 2,3 Lv01-16c Lv01-16d --------------------------- Both L01-16 and Lv06-03 speak about the ASK PLACE Lv01-16 states ------------------------------------------------ ...and he shall throw the remains - EASTWARD - in the ASH PLACE ------------------------------------------------ Lv06-03 states ----------------------------------------------- And the priest shall sweep the ASHES that the altar fire has consumed and PLACE IT NEAR THE ALTAR ----------------------------------------------- Rashi combines these two verses ---------------------------------------------- The ASH PLACE is the PLACE where the swept ASHES of the altar are placed. As can be seen from the CAPPED WORDS, the ASH PLACE is on the EASTERN SIDE OF THE ALTAR ---------------------------------------------- EXAMPLES 4,5: Lv05-16a Lv05-23a ------------------------------- Certain offerings are repeated in multiple sections of the Torah. This affords us a golden opportunity to use the OTHER VERSE method Lv05-23a states ------------------------------ When he sins and feels guilty ------------------------------- An OTHER VERSE Nu05-06:07 clarifies with further detail ------------------------------------ When he sins and CONFESSES his guilt ------------------------------------ In other words his feeling of guilt must be accompanied by a CONFESSION (The verbal confession was administered while the offerers hands were on the animal) Lv05-16 states ------------------------------------ He must PAY HIS SIN and add a fifth ------------------------------------ The ambiguous statement PAY HIS SIN is clarified by an OTHER VERSE Nu05-07 which states ------------------------------------------ He must PAY THE PRINCIPAL (of what he descecrated) and add a FIFTH ------------------------------------------ Here again Rashi uses the OTHER VERSE method to provide further clarification. EXAMPLE 6: Lv04-24a ------------------- In the following Rashi, the OTHER VERSE is actually CITED. Lv04-24 states ------------------------------ Slaughter the sin offering in the same place where you slaughter the UP offering ------------------------------ Rashi clarifies -------------------------------- That is, the sin offering must be slaughtered on the northern part of the altar -------------------------------- Here Rashi cites an OTHER VERSE Lv01-10:11 speaking about the UP offering explicitly states ----------------------------------- SLAUGHTER the UP on the NORTHERN THIGH of the ALTAR, before God ----------------------------------- LIST270a presents other examples of verse pairs with one verse CITING an other verse | ||

Ex24-03c | All Gods ordinances*3 | Ex15-25 | Laws given in Marah | |
------- | ----------------------- | --------- | ------------------ | |
*1 There is a subtlety in this Rashi. Verse Ex23-24 states ------------------------------------------------ - Dont bow to THEIR(the nation's) gods - Dont worship THEM (the gods) - Rather demolish THEM (who? The nations?or their gods?) - break THEIR (the nation's) monument altars ------------------------------------------------ Rashi's point is indicated in the parenthetical comments The DEMOLISH command refers to DEMOLISH the IDOLS not DEMOLISH the NATIONS! *2 Actually Ex24-01:02 states ---------------------------------------- the rest of you bow from afar and Moses alone will go up without the nation ---------------------------------------- This almost totally parallels Ex20-18 which states ---------------------------------------- The nation stood afar and Moses approached the dark cloud where God was ---------------------------------------- *3 Rashi ALSO mentions the ORDINANCES of Shabbath, Noachides and Honoring ones parents. The MAIN driving force behind Rashi in interpreting Ex24-03 is the OTHER VERSE method. The OTHER VERSE method could also refer to Ex16-28:29 which mentions the Sabbath. I simply chose the MAIN OTHER VERSE Ex15-25 that also mentions ORDINANCES. *4 (Rashi)HUNT and AMBUSH are simply two good examples of PREMEDITATION. The Torah distinguishes the treatment of a PREMEDITATED murder from a NEGLIGENT murder. *5 Sifsay Chachamim cracks a joke on Ex29-29 -------------------------------------------- to ANNOINT (by oil) IN THEM (= the clothes) -------------------------------------------- Lv21-10 makes it clear that the OIL is poured on the PRIESTS HEAD. But, the WEARING of HIGH PRIEST CLOTHES is also a requirement for the HIGH PRIEST induction. Rashi further explains ----------------------------------------------- Annointing is RELATED to SOCIETAL APPOINTMENT and hence ANNOINT IN THE CLOTHES could easily be a pun--POUR OIL ON HEAD and GET APPOINTED by wearing the High Priest clothes ----------------------------------------------- *6 Lv07 states that the owners of Peace offerings eat the peace offerings. However Lv07-34 states that THE PRIEST RECEIVES THE WAIVED BREAST and THE RAISED SHOULDER. This illuminates the phrase in Ex29-28 ------------------------------------------ It is a statute FOR the priests FROM the Jews ------------------------------------------- That is, although the Jewish owners eat their sacrifice nevertheless part of it goes to the priests. Ex29-28 mentions that the GIFT IS A RAISING But Lv07-34 states that BOTH - the WAIVED BREAST - the RAISED SHOULDER are priestly gifts. Hence the RAISING in Ex29-28 refers to both the BREAST/SHOULDER. *7 Lv05-16 and Lv05-18 have almost identical words Hence we can use the ALIGNMENT WORD MEANING method also. However the OTHER VERSE method suffices here. |

*1 The preceding chapter and paragraphs speak about the requirement to observe the law *2 The actual verse Lv09-15 states ------------------------------------------- Make the nation sin offering LIKE THE FIRST ------------------------------------------- By referring to Lv09-08 we learn that the phrase LIKE THE FIRST means LIKE THE FIRST SIN OFFERING -- THE ONE OFFERED FOR THE PRIEST (Since there were 2 sin offerings--one for the PRIEST and one for the NATION) *3 Here is a more complete story ------------------------------------------------------ - Dt05-12b states Observe Sabbath AS GOD COMMANDED YOU - Ex16-23 states THIS IS WHAT GOD HAD SAID:Dont cook on Sabbath ------------------------------------------------------ So both verses seem to be referring to something else An investigation shows that Ex12, Ex16-23 and Ex15-25:26 are the only times that the Jews received commandments prior to the decalogue. But Ex12 specifically refers to Passover commandments. Thus it seems reasonable that the cryptic reference AS GOD COMMANDED YOU in Dt05-12b is CITING Ex15-25:26 where God gave GENERAL COMMANDMENTS A similar argument would support the conjecture that - Dt05-16a HONOR YOUR PARENTS AS GOD COMMANDED YOU cites Ex15-25:26 | ||||
*11 There are two issues to address in the verse ----------------------------------------- - Why does the verse first say TO YOUR FATHERS - and then says TO ABRAHAM, ISAAC, JACOB ----------------------------------------- Rashi explains the second issue---Moses is performing a triple citation as indicated above. Hence it is necessary to mention each of the three patriarchs. However Rashi does not explain why the phrase TO YOUR FATHERS is in the verse. This gives the verse a GENERAL-DETAIL form but I do not see any inference that can be derived from this style. Note: There is a philosophical implication to the fact that God made a separate promise to each Patriarch: -------------------------------------------------- The attribute each Patriarch was known for was sufficient to merit the land of Israel to the Jews. - Because Jews are charitable like Abraham - Because Jews give their lives up like Isaac - Because Jews endure the exile like Jacob Each of these attributes is sufficient to merit Israel to the Jews -------------------------------------------------- |
