SUCCINCT SUMMARY
----------------
One of Rashis 10 main goals is to give the meaning of
words the same way the dictionary gives meaning. We
call this the Rashi method of WORD MEANING.

Rashi had a variety of vehicles to present meaning.
Rashi frequently explained MULTI-WORD IDIOMS. An IDIOM
occurs when 1 or more words form a NEW MEANING not
directly equal to the meaning of the constituent words
of the IDIOM. We call this the SUBRULE of NEW MEANINGS
since the words acquire new meanings.

In acquiring NEW MEANINGS Rashi frequently used a
universal principle of all languages---METONOMY.
METONOMY refers to the capacity to name an item
by a related item (such as naming a PEOPLE, Americans,
by the LAND they live in, America)

METONOMY is closed related to SYNECHDOCHE which
refers to naming a whole class by an exemplary
member of the class or naming an object by a
distinguished part of that object.

A related principle is what I call the triple
FFF principle:naming by FORM,FUNCTION, or FEEL.
For example the PENTAGON is named
by its FORM while the UNITED NATIONS is named
by its FUNCTION. HARDship is named by its feel.
There are other rules---the GLASS is named by the
substance it is made out of.

EXAMPLE 1: Nu04-14a Coal Rakers=Frighteners

The Hebrew root for COAL RAKERS is FRIGHTEN(Rashi)
The pulsing glow of the coals looks FRIGHTENING.
- MEM-CHETH-TAUV-TAUV means COAL RAKER
- CHETH-TAUV-TAUV means FRIGHTENING.

EXAMPLE 2: Nu04-14c SWEEP CLEAN = BARREN

The Hebrew word for a DUSTPAN is the verb to lay
a land BARREN. This corresponds to the English idiom
SWEEP CLEAN.
- Yud-Ayin-Hey means to barrenize (Sweep clean) a land
- Yud-Ayin-Hey means a DUSTPAN.

One of Rashi's 10 major goals is the explanation of GRAMMAR
the same way modern textbooks explain GRAMMAR. There are three
major GRAMMAR submethods:

(a) The goal of the ROOT submethod is to explain all
conjugations and meanings of Biblical roots.
Biblical roots are conjugated with letter prefixes and suffixes
to indicate (i) tense (ii) person (iii) gender (iv) plurality
(v) mode (vi) object (to whom the activity is done) and (vii)
mood. Each of these conjugations has a specific meaning.
Furthermore, these conjugations take on different forms for
roots with weak letters.

(b) The SENTENCE submethod deals with grammatical attributes
of sentences such as (i) word arrangement (Verb Subject vs
Subject Verb) (ii) sentence type  (interrogative, command)
(iii) compound sentences (iv) apposition and (v)
paragraph / sentence development.

(c) The MISCELLANEOUS grammatical methods deal with
(i) agreement (in gender and plurality), (ii) the construct
(iii) pronoun reference (iv) ellipsis (v) noun-verb transforms
(e.g. to dust) (vi) special word usage(e.g. how to use
numbers) (vii) suffix-prefixes (e.g. terminal HEY means
towards).

Today we explain a SENTENCE grammatical method that
extracts meaning from WORD ARRANGEMENT. All languages
have rules governing the POSITIONS OF ADJECTIVES. In Hebrew
when there are a sequence of adjectives to a noun, then
the numerical adjectives go at the end. It follows that
if the numerical adjective comes in the middle it should
not be treated numerically. Hence
- the adjective ONE that does not occur last is
translated as UNIQUE
- the adjective TWO that does not occur last is
translated as SIMILAR.
Note, in translations to English adjectives
comes first and numerical adjectives come first.

EXAMPLE 1: Nu08-08b

Nu08-08 literally translated reads

Rashi elaborates on the word SIMILAR

The word SIMILAR implies that both bulls
(one offered as an UP offering and one as
a SIN offering) are not eaten. "Just as
the UP offering goes completelly UP to God
and no part of it is eaten by the priests, so
too this sin offering is not eaten by priests."

Note: Ordinarily, sin offerings are eaten by
priests.

Rashi conjectures that this was a special
bull sin offering for idolatry for this
special occasion. Normally idolatry offerings
are goats (See Lv04 for typical sin offerings.

EXAMPLE 2: Nu07-15a

We believe that the above explanation of Rashi
based on adjective position is sound and appealing.
The traditional Rashi methods argue that ONE BULL
is a redundancy since the singular implies it is one. Such
an approach, emphasizing redundancy, ignores the numerous
examples of ONE SUCH AND SUCH which are common in Hebrew.
There are no comparable exegesii on these numerous biblical
occurrences. By contrast EVERY deviation from
proper adjective order is properly explained in Rashi. We will
give another example next week

In todays posting we deal with the grammatical SENTENCE rules
governing DEVELOPMENT in paragraphs and chapters: Given
a paragraph or chapter THEME, what types of sentences can
exist in that paragraph or chapter and what are their
relations to the central theme? We call this the rashi
subrule of CONSECUTIVE PARAGRAPHS.

Rashi knew 3 means of relating consecutive sentences or
consecutive paragraphs in a paragraph or chapter:
- CAUSE,ENABLEMENT
- CONTRAST
- UNIFYING THEME.
Today we study the CAUSAL-ENABLEMENT submethods.

EXAMPLE 1: Nu12-10a
-------------------
Verse Nu12-10a relates the punishment of Miryam
for slandering Moses
--------------------------------------------------
-(Phrase A)- And the cloud departed from off the Tent;
-(Phrase B)- and, behold, Miriam had become leprous,
white as snow; and Aaron looked upon Miriam,
and, behold, she was leprous.

Rashi in his comments explains the juxtaposition
of Phrase A and Phrase B

And the cloud departed from off the
Tent"(PHRASE A) ENABLES and ALLOWS "and behold
Miriam had become leprous.(PHRASE B)"

An analogy would be King angry at one of his
subjects. The King would leave the room BEFORE
punishment began since it is disrespectful to
degrade a subject of the King in his presence.
Similarly God, the King, had to depart ("The cloud
departed")before Miryam could be punished.

EXAMPLE 2: Nu08-19b

Verse Nu08-19 culminates the induction of the Levites
who helped the Priests in dealing with Temple matters

- PHRASE A -And I have given the Levites as a gift
to Aaron and to his sons from among the people of Israel,
to do the service of the people of Israel in the Tent
of Meeting, and to make an atonement for the people
of Israel;
- PHRASE B- that there should be no plague among the
children of Israel, when the people of Israel come
near to the sanctuary.

Rashi comments on the connection between Phrase A
and Phrase B

BECAUSE the Levites do the Temple work (Phrase A)
there will be no need for Jews to enter the
Temple. This prevents a plague (Phrase B)
But if they did enter the temple they would
be liable to a death penalty at the hands of
heaven (Phrase B). [See Nu18-07 for an explicit
statement that "strangers [non levites/priests]
coming near to the Temple die at the hands of heaven.]

Thus Rashi sees a CAUSAL connection
between the chapters. Dinah was raped
because Jacob did not IMMEDIATELY fulfill
the prophetic order.

Note Rashi expresses the same theme

Because he delayed doing the prophecy immediately
therefore he was punished that certain bad
occurrences happened to him

Rashi expresses this same theme on Gn35-22a
where we find that Reuven inteferred with his
fathers marital life.

The actual Biblical text reads

The above two translations use the well known Biblical
principle that the Hebrew letter VAV can refer to
any connective.

- 1st affirmed a vow of his wife
- then annuled it (which he had no right to)
- If she now sins (Because she was mislead into thinking
the vow is annuled)
- then HE bears the sin/punishment
In other words BECAUSE he misled her he must pay for
the sin.

*9 The causality of these verses reinforce each other
- Gn13-14 EXPLICITLY states that God promised Abe
Israel AFTER Lot separated from him

- Gn13-07 states that Abe and Lot faught WHILE
the Canaanites were still in the land.

So Rashi simply puts the two verses together
- Lot felt HE COULD USE ISRAEL land even though the
CANAANITES still owned it. Lot felt this way because
the land was promised to Abraham eventually. By contrast
Abraham refused to use the land UNTIL it was actually
given to him.

is to punish people according to what they have done
(See Rashi on Ex18-11- Jethro said: Now I know that
God is the true God because He returns to people
what they have done)

Hence this particular punishment (making the
Egyptians drive heavy vs killing them) showed
the Egyptians (CAUSED them to be aware) that
God was fighting.

- Laban was interested in the possibility of becoming
rich from Abraham.

*12 Presumably each city had its own method of preserving
food (e.g. use natural nutrients in the fields).
Hence the second sentence of the verse HE STORED EACH
CITIES FOOD NEAR IT is seen as ENABLING the first
sentence HE STORED THE FOOD OF THE SEVEN YEARS

*13 (Rashi) "And the cloud departed from off the
Tent"ENABLES and ALLOWS "and behold
Miriam had become leprous."

An analogy would be King angry at one of his
subjects. The King would leave the room BEFORE
punishment began since it is disrespectful to
degrade a subject of the King in his presence.
Similarly God, the King, had to depart ("The cloud
departed")before Miryam could be punished.

*14 BECAUSE the Levites do the Temple work
there will be no need for Jews to enter the
Temple. This prevents a plague

But if they did enter the temple they would
be liable to a death penalty at the hands of
heaven. [See Nu18-07 for an explicit
statement that "strangers [non levites/priests]
coming near to the Temple die at the hands of heaven.]
