SUCCINCT SUMMARY ---------------- Rashi will very often take a verse whose meaning is ALREADY understood and ADD a consequence to the verse. In other words the - WORDS and - GRAMMAR used by the verse are standard and understood. - OTHER VERSES do not add further details to the verses meaning. If Rashi adds consequences or assumptions to the verses meaning we call this the SPREADSHEET method since SPREADSHEETS are very often used to derive consequences from otherwise understood data. If the additional inferences are - numerical, and can be depicted with a SPREADSHEET of numbers we say Rashi is using the ALGEBRAIC spreadsheet method - diagramatic, we say Rashi is using the GEOMETRIC spreadsheet method - verbal-logical, we say Rashi is using the CONSEQUENCE SPREADSHEET method. EXAMPLE ISRAEL ------------------- There are numerous verses where - journey TO Israel is called GOING UP - journey AWAY from Israel is called GOING DOWN By itself this is simply a Hebrew idiomatic usage. Rashi however infers an additional GEOMETRIC consequence ----------------------------------------- The Jewish perspective as indicated by the Hebrew language is that Israel is - at the CENTER - and TOP of Europe. Other geographic references are made from this TOP, FOCAL point. --------------------------------------------------------------- Rashi could find further support for this view by using the OTHER VERSE method. Ez38-12 states ---------------------------------------------- To take booty, and to plunder; to turn your hand upon the desolate places that are now inhabited, and upon the people who are gathered from the nations, who have acquired cattle and goods, who dwell ON THE BELLY OF THE LAND ---------------------------------------------- We now list 6 verses using the language UP AND DOWN for going TO and AWAY from Israel. Rashi makes an identical comment ----------------------------------------- Israel is perceived at the TOP of the land ----------------------------------------- in all of them. One of them is about JERUSALEM/THE TEMPLE In other words the TEMPLE & JERUSALEM are at the TOP of Israel. ISRAEL is at the TOP of the world. Here are the verses - Verse Dt01-25a states ------------------------------------------------ And they took of the fruit of the land in their hands, and brought it DOWN to us, and brought us word again, and said, It is a good land which the Lord our God does give us. ------------------------------------------------ - Verse Gn45-09a states ------------------------------------------------ Hurry back to my father, and say to him, Thus said your son Joseph, God has made me lord of all Egypt; come DOWN to me, delay not; ------------------------------------------------ - Verse Ex33-01a states ------------------------------------------------ And the Lord said to Moses, Depart, and go UP, you and the people whom you have brought out of the land of Egypt, to the land which I swore to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob, saying, To your seed will I give it; ------------------------------------------------ - Verse Dt32-13b states ------------------------------------------------ He drove us on the HIGH PLACES of the earth, [ Israel ] so that we ate he ate the produce of the fields; and he made him suck honey out of the rock, and oil out of the flinty rock; ------------------------------------------------ - Verse Gn46-03:04 states ------------------------------------------------ And He said, I am God, the God of your father; fear not to go DOWN to Egypt; for I will there make of you a great nation; I will go DOWN with you to Egypt; and I will also surely bring you UP again; and Joseph shall put his hand upon your eyes. ------------------------------------------------ - Verse Dt17-08f states ------------------------------------------------ If there arises a matter too hard for you in judgment, between blood and blood, between plea and plea, and between plague and plague, being matters of controversy inside your gates; then shall you arise, and GO UP to the place which the Lord your God shall choose; ------------------------------------------------ LIST691b summarizes the above SPREADSHEET and offers further comments. LIST690z below presents other Rashis using the SPREADSHEET principle.

SUCCINCT SUMMARY ---------------- An advanced Rashi method is the use of symbolism to explain Biblical chapters. The general guidelines for symbolic interpretation are compactly presented in my essay GENESIS ONE SPEAKS ABOUT THE CREATION OF PROPHECY NOT THE CREATION OF THE WORLD which may be found at URL http://www.Rashiyomi.com/gen-1.htm We call this the Rashi method of SYMBOLISM / symbolism. As pointed out in the above essay, Rav Hirsch emphasized that one cannot whimsically apply symbolic methods. Rather the Biblical text must demand or require the use of symbolism. EXAMPLE Dt01-44a ---------------- Military activity is often vigorously described using animal metaphors. Here we use the symbolism principle that items can symbolize their function. Examples are plentiful - Nu24-09 states He couched, he lay down as a LION, and as a great LION. Who shall stir him up? Blessed is he who blesses you, and cursed is he who curses you. - Jr05-06 states Therefore a LION from the forest shall slay them, and a WOLF of the deserts shall destroy them, a LEOPARD shall watch over their cities; every one who goes out there shall be torn in pieces; because their transgressions are many, and their apostasies are great. - Jr46-12 states Her sound is like that of a SERPENT on the move; for they shall march with force, and come against her with axes, like wood cutters. - Dt01-44a states And the Amorites, who lived in that mountain, came out against you, and chased you, as BEES do, and destroyed you in Seir, even unto Hormah. The interpreter's task is to identify the unique military characteristics of each animal. Rashi commenting on the last verse Dt01-44a states ------------------------------------------------ The military characteristic of the BEE is the swiftness of conquest without exertion of power. That is a BEE kills thru an instantaneous sting with venom, not by the type of power and interactive fight shown by a LION. ------------------------------------------------ LIST975v summarizes this argument

SUCCINT SUMMARY: ---------------- One of Rashi's 10 major goals is the explanation of GRAMMAR the same way modern textbooks explain GRAMMAR. There are three major GRAMMAR submethods: (a) The goal of the ROOT submethod is to explain all conjugations and meanings of Biblical roots. Biblical roots are conjugated with letter prefixes and suffixes to indicate (i) tense (ii) person (iii) gender (iv) plurality (v) mode (vi) object (to whom the activity is done) and (vii) mood. Each of these conjugations has a specific meaning. Furthermore, these conjugations take on different forms for roots with weak letters. (b) The SENTENCE submethod deals with grammatical attributes of sentences such as (i) word arrangement (Verb Subject vs Subject Verb) (ii) sentence type (interrogative, command) (iii) compound sentences (iv) apposition and (v) paragraph / sentence development. (c) The MISCELLANEOUS grammatical methods deal with (i) agreement (in gender and plurality), (ii) the construct (iii) pronoun reference (iv) ellipsis (v) noun-verb transforms (e.g. to dust) (vi) special word usage(e.g. how to use numbers) (vii) suffix-prefixes (e.g. terminal HEY means towards). Today we explain a multiple use of ROOT CONJUGATIONS-- the INFINITIVE FORM can denote - the INFINITIVE - ONGOING activity (The same nuances as an English GERUND) Most languages have grammatical forms indicating ongoing activity For example the word RUNNING in the sentence I TRIPPED WHILE RUNNING indicates, not RUNNING at one point of time, but rather ONGOING RUNNING over a period of time. In English this ongoing activity is indicated by the ING of the Gerund form. In Hebrew, according to Rashi, the INFINITIVE is used to indicate ONGOING activity. EXAMPLE Dt01-16a ---------------- Dt01-16 states --------------------------------------------- And I (Moses) commanded your judges at this time as follows: Be INVOLVED IN LISTENING between your brother and [thereby] judge justly between a person his brother or a sojourner --------------------------------------------- Rashi translates the Hebrew infinitive form of the root TO LISTEN as meaning BE INVOLVED IN LISTENING. Hence the Rashi comment --------------------------------------------- Moses told them to be PATIENT in judging cases - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - If you have seen a case a few times don't judge the next one quickly but rather BE INVOLVED IN LISTENING to the case - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - --------------------------------------------- LIST080c summarizes the above list It also provides much needed detail

*1 Added Jan 21 2002 *2 The full verse states -------------------------------------------------- We destroyed them the same way we destroyed Sichon: DESTROYING populated cities, the women and children -------------------------------------------------- The idea seems to be that this war was not won in 1 battle Rather after winning the war the conquest was ONGOING and CONTINUED over a series of battles. Hence the verse uses the GERUND to impart the flavor of a CONTINUING WAR rather than a war/battle that took place at one point of time *3 Jethro had just advised Moses to create a Judicial system with a hierarchy of Judges. In the old system Moses judged every case. In the new system Moses would only judge the difficult cases while the routine cases would be judged by appointed judges. Such a setup would CONTINUOUSLY EASE MOSES BURDEN. *4 Added Oct 25 2001 |
