SUCCINCT SUMMARY
----------------
One of Rashis 5 main goals is to indicate paragraph
structure. The modern author can indicate paragraph
structure thru either
- indentation or
- white space: blank lines surrounding the paragraph.

One method by which the Bible indicates paragraph
structure is to use a THEME-DETAIL-THEME style--that is
- a THEME sentence is stated,
- followed by some DETAILS of that theme and concluding
- with a repetition of the THEME sentence.
Thus the opening and closing THEME sentence form
brackets indicating a paragraph unit.

Recall that in modern writing, the details of
a paragraph develop the theme sentence of the paragraph.
Since the THEME-DETAIL-THEME structure
indicates a biblical paragraph, therefore the
DETAILs are seen as the DEVELOPMENT of the paragraph

We call this Rashi method the THEME-DETAIL-THEME
or GENERAL-DETAIL-GENERAL submethod of the
RABBI ISHMAEL STYLE method. The name RABBI ISHMAEL
STYLE method reflects the fact that the
THEME-DETAIL-THEME structure is mentioned
among the 13 exegetical rules of Rabbi Ishmael.

Today we present a peach of an example which neatly
illustrates all aspects of the Rabbi Ishmael method.

EXAMPLE Dt12-02:04
------------------
Dt12-02:04 has a THEME-DETAIL-THEME structure
----------------------------------------------------
When you come to the land God gives you
- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -
THEME DETAILS
------------------------- --------------------------
ERADICATE all the places,
Overthrow their altars, and
Break their pillars, and
Burn their tree Gods with fire;and
cut down their carved images
DESTORY THEIR names from that place
----------------------------------------------------

The THEME-DETAIL-THEME structure
motivates several Rashi comment
--------------------------------
- You dont destroy the PLACE ITSELF (Scorched earth)
- But rather destroy their idols (DETAIL SECTION)
- And Similarly destroy their NAMES--make derogatory
nicknames
--------------------------------

Here we see Rashi using the Rabbi Ishmael style rules
- The GENERAL THEME (Eradicate places) is restricted
to the DETAILS (Eradicate idols)
- The DETAIL THEME (Destroy idols) is generalized to
SIMILAR items (Make their names derogatory)

This restriction and generalization is characteristic
of the Rabbi Ishmael style rules.

LIST460w below summarizes this argument.

COMMENTS
*1 (Rashi)
------------------------------------------------
- You need not eradicate all places (GENERAL THEME)
- Rather you only need eradicate the altars(Detail)

*2 (Rashi)

SUCCINCT SUMMARY
----------------
One of Rashis 10 main goals is the clarification of meaning
the same way the dictionary clarifies meaning. Rashi will
frequently comment on SPECIAL CONNECTIVE WORS such as IF,
BECAUSE, PERHAPS.

EXAMPLE:The word KAPH YUD, KI, has 7 meanings
---------------------------------------------
The Hebrew word KAPH YUD has 7 meanings as follows
---------------------------------------------------------
Gn18-15a BECAUSE Sarah denied mocking BECAUSE she was afraid
Gn29-15a QUERY BECAUSE you are my relative you dont get paid?
Dt15-08b RATHER Don't be miserly RATHER give charity
Ex34-09a IF IF we are obstinate then forgive us
Dt32-03a WHEN WHEN I call Gods name give praise to God
Nu20-29c THAT The nation saw THAT Aaron died
Ex23-05c PERHAPS PERHAPS you will desert him? No--help him
---------------------------------------------------------

Rashi explains the word KI in Dt11-31a as meaning BECAUSE
------------------------------------------------------
When you come to Israel acknowledge CURSES and BLESSINGS
of observing God's law BECAUSE God [thru miracles] is
taking you over the Jordan and allowing you to conquer the land
---------------------------------------------------------

Dt11-31a BECAUSE Acknowledge bless/curse BECAUSE ofGods miracles

COMMENTS
*1 The actual flow of text would be as follows
-----------------------------------------------------
When you come to the land that God gives you then you
will ACKNOWLEDGE the blessings on Mount Gerizim and the
curses on Mount Eyval (which are at...) BECAUSE you
are transversing the Jordan and conquering the land
through Gods help [miracles]
-----------------------------------------------------

Rashi's point is that
- we acknowledge BLESSINGS and CURSE of following
Gods laws
- because our entry to the land is miraculous and
dependent on God*10
LONGER FOOTNOTES

*10 Rashi emphasizes
--------------------------------------------
You will cross over Jordan thru a miracle
--------------------------------------------

However I would argue that this is in the general context
that several miracles will happen
- crossing the Jordan
- conquest of Israel
- Inhabiting the land

SUCCINCT SUMMARY
------------------
One of Rashis 10 main goals is to explain grammar
the same way modern Hebrew grammar books explain
grammar. We call this the Rashi rule of GRAMMAR.

One important concept in GRAMMAR is GENDER.
Recall that every noun has a gender.

EXAMPLE Lv17-14a Lv17-14b
-------------------------------
For an animal has a SOUL/LIFE
when ITS BLOOD--IT [masculine] is with its SOUL-DESIRES
therefore I said to the people of Israel,
You shall not eat the blood of any kind of flesh;
for the LIFE/SOUL of all flesh IT [Feminine ]is its blood;
whoever eats it shall be cut off.
-------------------------------------------------

Rashi identifies the gender of the two words IT as shown
The word SOUL is feminine while the word BLOOD is masculine.
Rashi thereby emphasizes an equivalence between BLOOD & SOUL
----------------------------------------------------
- The SOUL is in the BLOOD
- Animals have a soul when the BLOOD is with the SOUL
(eg when the animal gets aroused its blood flow increases)
----------------------------------------------------

HONOR*4 MASCULINE Gn49-06d My HONOR--you dont meet them
BREAD MASCULINE Lv24-09b Eat IT (him) (The Bread)
FLOUR*5 MASCULINE Nu05-15b The FLOUR is a vengenance minchah
--------- --------- -------- ------------------------------------
COMMENTS
*1 Lv13 discusses LEPROSY. The words
- SEAYTH
- BAHERETH
- MISPACATH
refer to various types of SKIN afflictions (Some leprous
and some not). Words ending in terminal Tauv are typically
feminine. The above verses with either
- feminine conjugations of the verb
- feminine pronouns
all confirm this.

*2 IN THIS TORAH BOOK vs IN THE BOOK OF THIS TORAH
In one case THIS refers to BOOK(masculine) while
in the other case it refers to TORAH(Feminine)

*3 Cute---The verse seems as if it says
FULFILL (WORK) THIS WEEK

But THIS is FEMININE and WEEK is MASCULINE!

So Rashi explains that the verse means
FULFILL THE WEEK OF THIS GIRL
That is Laban said to Jacob that he had to work
another week of years (7 years) to marry Leah

*4 Rashi makes 2 points here:
- Jacob interrupts his address to Simon-Levi
- Jacob addresses his HONOR(soul):HONOR DONT GET NEAR THEM
Such an abrupt change has important emotional overtones

According to Rashi the verses would read
------------------------------------------
Simon and Levi are brothers where criminal tools
MY HONOR---dont get near the meetings
MY SOUL----dont get involved in their secrets
For they tried to murder in anger
------------------------------------------

Rashi infers this both from the gender and person of
the verbs. For the verse does not say
------------------------------------------
May my SOUL not get near them (3rd person)
------------------------------------------

But rather says
----------------------------------------------
My SOUL: YOU do not get near them (2nd person)
----------------------------------------------

It was important for Rashi to state this since
the difference in spelling between SECOND PERSON
FUTURE MASCULINE and THIRD PERSON FUTURE FEMININE
is very small.

*5 MINCHAH is FEMININE while FLOUR is MASCULINE

So when it says IT(HE) IS A VENGENANCE MINCHAH, the
word IT refers to the FLOUR not to the MINCHAH

The FLOUR of this Minchah was of poorer quality to
symbolize that the suspected adulteress did something
seemly (behaved with poorer quality)

SUCCINCT SUMMARY
----------------
One of Rashis 5 main goals was explaining meaning similar to
how a dictionary explains meaning. We call this the Rashi rule
of WORD MEANING.

Rashi had 10 vehicles by which to explain meaning.

For example, Rashi could explain meaning based on the 1 and
2 letter roots of which the root was composed. Rashi believed
in two sets of roots--for purposes of CONJUGATION Rashi believed
in 3 letter roots; for purposes of MEANING Rashi believed in 2
letter roots. Here Rashi will explain the MEANING of a 3 letter
root based on the meaning of the 2 terminal letters as well as
the meaning of the initial letter. We call this the SUBRULE of
2-4 LETTER ROOTS.

Today we show how a TERMINAL SUFFIX NUN can indicate
INTENSITY. For example RESH YUD BETH means DISPUTE
but with a TERMINAL NUN, RESH YUD BETH NUN means FIGHT.
Here FIGHT is an INTENSE form of DISPUTE.

EXAMPLE Dt12-02a
----------------
The Biblical text at Dt12-02a uses
- the root Aleph Beth Daleth (To destroy)
- the root+Suffix, Aleph Beth Daleth Nun (To eradicate)

Rashi comments
--------------------------------------
Aleph Beth Daleth Nun connotes INTENSE destruction
and indicates ERADICATION where nothing is left
of the object (In the case of Tree idols no root
is left to rebuild)
--------------------------------------

LIST910a below summarizes many examples where the PREFIX
or SUFFIX letter NUN connotes INTENSITY.

COMMENTS
*1 This is onomatopoeia (word meaning by sound)
Another (famous) Hebrew example is BAK-BOOK for
BOTTLE (Water coming out of a bottle sounds
like BAK-BOOK BAK BOOK)

*2 A-G-R is said to mean GATHERING but more specifically
refers to HARVESTING (eg. Dt28-39 -- you will not drink
or harvest wine)

*3 D-Sh-A refers to HERBIAGE -- minor field growth.
A PLUMP/FAT person could be said that
--------------------------------------
HIS field (stomach) IS GROWING WILDLY
--------------------------------------

Note that D-Sh-N does frequently mean FAT

Also note that FIELD can refer to STOMACH
(Songs07-03)

*4 Cf Ex21-18 If men FIGHT and one hits the other with a
stone or a fist....

*5 Just like the English metaphor for TESTING/INVESTIGATION
-- LETS LOOK INTO IT --

*6 The ChShN was one of the eight PRIESTLY garments.
The ChShN held the URIM vTUMIM -- these were
lettered ornaments with prophetic capacity. When
the High Priest asked a question of God he would
get the answer by having a vision of the ChShN
with the letters answering his question lit up on
the URIM.

Hence the ChShN containing the URIM vTUMIM enabled
the High Priest to FEEL OUT (ChSh) a case -- compare
the similar English FEELING OUT A CASE

*7 The word SRN refers both to the GOVERNOR as well
as to the STATE over which he governs (Cf Joshua 13:3)
SR by itself refers to any leader. Hence GOVERNOR
(Srn) is an INTENSE (N) Leader (SR) or the PINACLE
of LEADERSHIP

*8 Throughout the Bible if you want to state that
someone was KNOWN for something then you
state that the person was the CHILD OF it.
eg RIF RAFS are called CHILDS OF NO-NAME

*9 Functionally, the THUMB opposes other fingers
and enables humans to grasp objects. Hence
the THUMB enables things to be held INSIDE
ones hand
LONGER FOOTNOTES

*10 Some scholars interpret a terminal NUN as indicating
LESS -- but it should be clear from this example --
YRVN vs RV -- that a terminal NUN indicates INTENSITY
(DISPUTE - FIGHT)

SUCCINCT SUMMARY
----------------
One of Rashis 10 main goals was the resolution of
contradictions. These contradictions typically arise
from two verses stating contradictory things.
We call this the RASHI RULE OF CONTRADICTION.

Rashi had three methods to resolve contradiction. If
the CONTRADICTION could be resolved by viewing the
contradictory verses as two aspects of the same item then
we employ the TWO ASPECTS method of resolution. If
the CONTRADICTION could be resolved by viewing the
contradictory verses as two stages of the same process then
we employ the TWO STAGES submethod. Finally if the
CONTRADICTION could be resolved by retranslating the verses
using broader or more literal meanings then we use the
BROAD-LITERAL submethod.

EXAMPLE Dt12-13b
----------------
-Dt12-13 states DONT MAKE OFFERINGS WHEREEVER YOU FEEL LIKE
-1K18-20,30,38 states ELIJAH OFFERED AT MOUNT CARMEL

We see the CONTRADICTION? Is there a prohibition of offering
wherever we feel like (Except in Jerusalem which God has chosen)
or can we, like Elijah, offer outside Jerusalem, for example in
Mount Carmel.

Rashi resolves this CONTRADICTION using the 2 ASPECTS method
------------------------------------------------------------
- PEOPLE are prohibited from offerings wherever they feel like
- PROPHETS can TEMPORARILY abrogate this law for the sake
of God and religion
------------------------------------------------------------

This law that prophets can temporarily abrogate laws for
religious reasons is brought down in Jewish law (Rambam
Foundation Laws)

Ex24-12 Nu27-05 The 10 commmandments cover all areas of law

COMMENTS
*1 Here are the full set of verses
---------------------------------------------
Lv07-34 I have given BREAST and FAT to Priest
Lv03-03 Fat is offered on altar Fire
---------------------------------------------

Hence we read Lv07-30 as follows
--------------------------------------------------
Owner brings
the [for-the-altar] fire:
[namely] FAT on breast is brought
to WAIVE IT[that is the BREAST not the FAT]
before God.
--------------------------------------------------

*2 The Minchah Eating rights are as follows
- Sin offerings are never eaten by priests
- Ordinary Minchahs are eaten by Priests
- Minchahs with a Priest owner are not eaten

In short all MINCHAH EATING laws apply.

There is an ironic subtlety here.
The verse says
------------------------------
It will to the PRIEST as a MINCHAH
-------------------------------

Rashi literally says
---------------------------------------------------
If a PRIEST offered it no one would eat it
---------------------------------------------------

It thus APPEARS that Rashi is PUNNING on the
word PRIEST---
- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -
It will be to a PRIEST OWNER like a MINCHAH
- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -

But this is not necessary. The verse simply
means
- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -
It will be to the PRIEST [offerer] as a MINCHAH
- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -

This implies
----------------------------------
- If it is an ordinary Minchah the
PRIEST OFFERER can eat it
- If it is a PRIEST OWNED Minchah
then no one eats it
----------------------------------

Thus Rashi was not PUNNING but rather
emphasizing one extreme case of the
simple meaning of the text.

*3
Ex25-01:03 states
-----------------------------------
Command the Jews to take DONATIONS
whoever wishes to DONATE.
And these are the DONATIONS you should take
...gold SILVER and COPPER
-----------------------------------

But Ex30-11:13 states
-------------------------------------
When you make a CENSUS people
should give HALF A SHEKEL of silver
-------------------------------------

This is further spelled out at Ex38-25:28
--------------------------------------------
The silver from the half shekels was so much
and so much and used to make the silver stands
for the boards and the curtain hooks
--------------------------------------------

We see the CONTRADICTION: Was the silver a VOLUNTARY
donation or a REQUIRED TAX?

Rashi answers by distinguishing TWO CASES of the silver
-----------------------------------------------------
- There was a REQUIRED TAX of HALF SHEKEL used for the
stands and curtain hooks
- There was an ADDITIONAL VOLUNTARY TAX---the silver
gathered was used to make silver utensils in the
sanctuary
-----------------------------------------------------
