SUCCINCT SUMMARY ---------------- Rashi frequently makes powerful inferences from - the ALIGNMENT, - that is, the word by word comparison, of almost identical verses. The minor variations between these almost similar verses suggests nuances and differences or even meaning. We call this the Rashi rule of ALIGNMENT -When Rashi identifies two cases from the ALIGNMENT we call this the Rashi subrule of TWO CASES -When Rashi infers nuances from the variations between the almost similar verses (or verse phrases) we call this the Rashi subrule of NUANCES. -When Rashi infers MEANING from the ALIGNMENT of almost identical phrases we call this the Rashi SUBRULE of MEANING. EXAMPLE 1: Dt24-08a Dt24-08b --------------------------------------------- Verse Dt24-08 discussing the obligation to observe the Leprosy laws --------------------------------------------- WATCH the plague of leprosy, to WATCH AND DO according to all that the priests the Levites shall teach you; as I commanded them, so you shall WATCH AND DO ---------------------------------------------- The CAPPED words hi-light the subtle nuances in the ALIGNED phrases. Rashi comments ------------------------------------------------ - WATCH & DO: Refers to the Laws in Lv13. Leprosy plagues are either declared (a)ritually pure (b) ritually impure or (c)impure requiring sacrificial atonement. - WATCH WITHOUT DO: Refers to a WATCHING of the PLAGUE and ITS SIGNS--that is there is a Biblical prohibition of tearing out SIGNS of ritual impurity or defacing a LEPROSY PLAGUE ------------------------------------------------- LIST309y summarizes this ALIGNMENT. EXAMPLE Dt24-13a ---------------- Both Dt24-13a and Ex22-25 both speak about returning loan pledges such as night garments but use slightly different language --------------------------------------------- Dt24-13a ....you shall return it to him AT sundown; Ex22-25 ....you shall return it to him BY sundown; ---------------------------------------------- Rashi comments on the CAPPED ALIGNED phrases ---------------------------------------------- - You MAY return it ANY TIME during the DAY(BY SUNDOWN) - You MUST return it to him AT SUNDOWN (If you havent already) ------------------------ --------------------------------------- List309z summarizes this ALIGNMENT EXAMPLE Dt25-03b ---------------- Note the CAPPED referrals in the Biblical paragraph Dt25-01:03 ----------------------------------------------------------- If there is a controversy between men and they come to judgment, that the judges may judge them; .... and condemn the WICKED. And it shall be, if the WICKED man deserves to be beaten, ....according to his WICKEDNESS. 40 stripes he may give him, if he should exceed... with many stripes, then your BROTHER might be degraded ----------------------------------------------------------- Rashi comments ------------------------------------- The person throughtout the paragraph is called WICKED. But after he receives the stripes he is called BROTHER (Showing that his sins have been forgiven). ------------------------------------- List310b summzarizes this ALIGNMENT

*1 Rashi explains the NUANCES of the two phrases WATCH vs WATCH-DO - WATCH DO refers to ACTION items such as - - declaration of ritually pure state - - declaration of ritually impurte states - - declaration of state requiring sacrificial atonement - WATCH without DO refers to - - GUARDING the leprosy spot and its signs (That is, it is Biblically prohibited to destroy them) |

*1 Identical phrases *2 Rashi points out that the Bible here is talking about the loan of a NIGHT garment. - You MAY return it to the owner ANY time during the day (BY sundown) - If you still haven't returned it then you MUST return it at sundown. In other words there is an obligation to return the garment to him the following night and that obligation can be made any time during the day but at least at night |

SUCCINCT SUMMARY ---------------- Some Rashi comments deal with FORMATTING. Modern authors FORMAT using such techniques as BULLETS, PARAGRAPHING, BOLD, ITALICS and UNDERLINE. The Biblical Author achieved these effects but thru different means. For example a modern author might hilight distinct items using BULLETS. The Biblical Author hilights distinct items using REPEATING KEYWORDS. We call this the Rashi rule of FORMATTING with the Rashi subrule of KEYWORDS AS BULLETS (Rashi could also infer from the general PARAGRAPH STRUCTURE (without any keywords). We call this the the Rashi rule of FORMATTING with the Rashi subrule of PARAGRAPHS.) EXAMPLE Dt23-05b ---------------- Dt23-04:05 states -------------------------------------------- An Ammonite or Moabite shall not enter into the congregation of the Lord; to their tenth generation shall they not enter into the congregation of the Lord forever; Because they met you not with bread and with water - AT the roads, - AT the Exodus and because they hired against you Balaam the son of Beor of Pethor of Mesopotamia, to curse you. ----------------------------------------------------- The repeated word AT creates a BULLET atmosphere. Rashi therefore indicates the EMPHASIS in each bullet ---------------------------------------------------------- - AT the ROADS---(RASHI: When you were road weary) - AT the Exodus--(-----: When you still felt like slaves) ---------------------------------------------------------- LIST120s below summarizes this argument EXAMPLE Dt18-04a Dt18-04b ------------------------- Verse Dt18-04, discussing the PRIESTLY GIFTS, states ------------------------------------- - The FIRST fruit also of your grain, of your wine, and of your oil, and - The FIRST of the fleece of your sheep, shall you give the PRIEST ------------------------------------- The repeating keyword phrase THE FIRST creates a BULLET atmosphere. Rashi therefore indicates the EMPHASIS in each bullet ----------------------------------------- -- FIRST of grain, wine, oil (RASHI: This is the TERUMAH gift cross referenced in Nu18-25:32 which is obligatory on both Jews and Levites---when you harvest grain, oil or wine you must give the beginning harvest to the priest as a gift) -- FIRST of the flecce of your sheep (RASHI: When you fleece your sheep then the first shearings must be made a gift to the priest) ----------------------------------------- Here Rashi interprets the repeating keywords as indicating TWO SEPARATE GIFTS - FIRST of harvest - FIRST of fleecing Rashi makes further comments about the percentage required for the gift (2% for grains and 1.5% for fleece). Although there are attempts to make these quantities Biblical Rashi points out that Biblically there are no quantities (The quantities are Rabbinic). LIST120t below summarizes this argument
