SUCCINCT SUMMARY ---------------- One of Rashis 10 main tasks is to explain GRAMMAR the same way modern Hebrew books explain GRAMMAR. We call this the Rashi GRAMMAR rule. Rashi had three broad sub-rules in explaining GRAMMAR (1) A major component of Hebrew GRAMMAR are the rules governing conjugations of VERBS, or HEBREW ROOTS. There are 7 grammatical modes with half a dozen parameters: tense, person, gender, plurality, connective words... (2) Another component of GRAMMAR deals with PREFIXES-SUFFIXES and other letters, or small words, that indicate changes in meanings. This PREFIX-SUFFIX subrule includes the rules governing the rules of plural, gender, pronouns etc. We are still making discoveries of PREFIX-SUFFIX rules today. (3) Finally a more advanced part of GRAMMAR deals with the rules of entire SENTENCES. The SENTENCE rules includes the rules governing sentence order, apposition, and compound sentences Today we look at two examples of use of the APPOSITION RULE. EXAMPLE 1: Gn12-17b ------------------- Gn12-17b states ---------------------------------------------- And God PLAGUED PHAROH with great plagues AND HIS HOUSE because of the matter of Sarai,Abrams wife ---------------------------------------------- Rashi comments that the capped phrases should be in APPOSITION ------------------------------------------ And God PLAGUED PHAROH AND HIS HOUSE with great plagues because of the matter of Sarai,Abrams wife ------------------------------------------ Rashi further suggests that HOUSE=HOUSEHOLD (this is justified by the METONOMY principle which allows words to refer to RELATED items) Hence the final commentary of Rashi is ------------------------------------------ And God PLAGUED PHAROH AND HIS HOUSEHOLD with great plagues because of the matter of Sarai,Abrams wife ------------------------------------------ EXAMPLE 2: Gn14-05a -------------------- Rashi translates the following sentence using classical APPOSITION rules -------------------------------------- And the HORI: In THEIR mountain: SEIR -------------------------------------- LIST705a summarizes these example and other examples using APPOSITION.

List of verses with Use of APPOSITION
VERSE | WORDS IN APPOSITION IN VERSE are CAPPED*1
Gn12-17b | God plagued PHAROH and HIS HOUSEHOLD with PLAGUES
Gn14-05a | And the CHORI: in THEIR mountain: SEIR
Nu13-26b | Spys brought report TO LEADERS and TO CONGREGATION
Dt10-15a | God chose the THEIR PROGENY, YOU, from all nations
Nu34-06a | The Mediteranean Sea... is the WESTERN BORDER
Nu04-49a | By Gods order were census act & CENSUSES OF GOD*2
Gn19-12b | WHO ELSE is with you--CHILDREN IN-LAWS--leave city
Gn14-23a | FROM THREAD TO SHOELACE...If I take ANYTHING
Ex23-33a | Dont intermarry lest you SIN--ie SERVE OTHER GODS
Isa63-7 | I will remember GODS GRACE--ie HIS PRAISES
Ps147-9 | God gives ANIMALS food-(even) to RAVENS that pray
Gn01-29a | I God give to MAN plant food---& to the ANIMALS
Lv06-13a | This is the INAUGURATION SACRIFICE-DAILY MNCH
|
||
*1 So the verse should be read with all the CAPPED words brought together. For example Gn14-23a is UNDERSTOOD as ----------------------------------------------------- If I take ANYTHING---FROM THREAD TO SHOELACE-from you ----------------------------------------------------- *2 So the Biblical text -------------------- he CENSUSED them -------------------- refers to the ACT of census. The Biblical text ---------------------- CENSUSES OF GOD TO MOSES ---------------------- would refer to the CENSUS categories, Age 30-50, that God ordered Moses. |

SUCCINCT SUMMARY: ----------------- One of Rashi's 10 major goals is the explanation of GRAMMAR the same way modern textbooks explain GRAMMAR. There are three major GRAMMAR submethods: (a) The goal of the ROOT submethod is to explain all conjugations and meanings of Biblical roots. Biblical roots are conjugated with letter prefixes and suffixes to indicate (i) tense (ii) person (iii) gender (iv) plurality (v) mode (vi) object (to whom the activity is done) and (vii) mood. Each of these conjugations has a specific meaning. Furthermore, these conjugations take on different forms for roots with weak letters. (b) The SENTENCE submethod deals with grammatical attributes of sentences such as (i) word arrangement (Verb Subject vs Subject Verb) (ii) sentence type (interrogative, command) (iii) compound sentences (iv) apposition and (v) paragraph / sentence development. (c) The MISCELLANEOUS grammatical methods deal with (i) agreement (in gender and plurality), (ii) the construct (iii) pronoun reference (iv) ellipsis (v) noun-verb transforms (e.g. to dust) (vi) special word usage(e.g. how to use numbers) (vii) suffix-prefixes (e.g. terminal HEY means towards). Today we study the conjugations of NOUNS and rare VERB-SUBJECT forms. EXAMPLE Gn04-01b ---------------- Gn04-01 states --------------------------------------- Chava called her first son KAYIN because I have ACQUIRED A MAN WITH GOD --------------------------------------- Rashi cryptically says ------------------------------- KAYIN comes from the root KNH=ACQUIRE ------------------------------- Rashi does not further elaborate on the relationship between ACQUIRE and KAYIN. Let us review the following LIST of similar NOUN forms ending with a *I* syllable (kaYIN, daYISH,zaYIN,etc) ------------------------------------------------------------ HEBREW ROOT MEANING PROVOKES HEBREW ROOT --------------- -------------- ------------ ----------------- Aleph Yud Nun Not found Where is it Aleph Nun Hey Daleth Yud Shin Harvest season Threshing Daleth Shin Hey Zayin Yud Nun Weapons Defection Zayin Nun Hey Kuph Yud Nun Eves son Acquisition Kuph Nun Hey Ayin Yud Nun Eye him Responses Ayin Nun Hey ------------------------------------------------------------ This list shows that the YUD-CHIRIK-NUN form indicates PROVOCATION of the corresponding verb. Hence KUPH YUD NUN (KAYIN) indicates a PROVOCATION of OWNERSHIP. This corresponds to the typical situation where having a first child makes parents aware of their need to acquire material goods and a social position so that their "child" will grow up normally. That is, the 1st child PROVOKES a quest for ownership. LIST703k below summarizes these examples. EXAMPLE 2: Gn11-06b ------------------- Rashi teaches the gramatical conjugation principle that a verb with a suffix MEM indicates a SUBJECT-VERB meaning. Here are some typical examples: ---------------------------------------------------------------- VERSE HEBREW Text of Verse with M=subject translated -------- --------- --------------------------------------------- Gn04-08 BiHYoTHaM WHEN THEY were in the field, Cain killed Abel Gn11-02 BNaSaM AS THEY journeyed from the east, they... Gn32-20 BMoTzaCHM WHEN YOU find him say such and such Gn19-17 KHoTziAM WHEN THEY brought them outside, he said, flee Gn34-07 KShamAM WHEN THEY heard, they came from the field Gn11-06a HaChiLaM They are unified BUT this is what THEY do ---------------------------------------------------------------- As can be seen the Rashi principle that --------------------------------- MEM indicates a subject --------------------------------- only applies ------------------------- in an ADVERBIAL clause ------------------------- that is introduced by an -------------------------- ADVERBIAL conjunction -------------------------- such as --------------------------- WHEN, AS, BUT. --------------------------- The ADVERBIAL clause can be recognized by the fact that it MODIFIES and verb of the sentence and answers questions about the activity (Such as WHEN) LIST703L below summarizes these examples.

SUCCINCT SUMMARY ---------------- Some Rashi comments deal with FORMATTING. Modern authors FORMAT using such techniques as BULLETS, PARAGRAPHING, BOLD, ITALICS and UNDERLINE. The Biblical Author achieved these effects but thru different means. For example a modern author might hilight distinct items using BULLETS. The Biblical Author hilights distinct items using REPEATING KEYWORDS. We call this the Rashi rule of FORMATTING with the Rashi subrule of KEYWORDS AS BULLETS (Rashi could also infer from the general PARAGRAPH STRUCTURE (without any keywords). We call this the the Rashi rule of FORMATTING with the Rashi subrule of PARAGRAPHS.) EXAMPLE Gn20-05b ---------------- Gn20-05 states the response of Avimelech who had been accused of abducting a married woman who lied to him about her marital status -------------------------------------------- Didn't her husband tell me, "She is my sister?" and didn't she, even she herself sau, "He is my brother;" - IN the integrity of my heart and - IN the innocence of my hands have I done this. ----------------------------------------------------- Rashi comments on the REPEATED KEYWORD "IN". ---------------------------------------------- The repeated keyword IN creates a BULLET effect and indicates that the Author wished to emphasize each distinct phrase. Hence we interpret - IN integrity of my heart--- I DID NOT INTEND TO SIN - IN innocence of my hand---- I DID NOT CONSUMATE THE MARRIAGE Here Avimelech emphasizes that he inquired on her marital status and all people asked advised him she was single! ---------------------------------------------------------- LIST120u below summarizes this argument
