SUCCINCT SUMMARY
----------------
A powerful but simple Rashi method is the CITATION or CROSS-
REFERENCING of an OTHER VERSE for the purpose of adding
FURTHER DETAILS to a verse we are studying. We call this
the OTHER VERSE method. There are three submethods to the
OTHER VERSE method.

If the verse actually CITES or refers to an OTHER VERSE we
call this the SUBMETHOD of CITATION.

If the OTHER VERSE explains the meaning of
some term in the first verse we call this the SUBMETHOD
of MEANING.

If the first verse does not cite an other verse and if
no meaning is explained then we call this the SUBMETHOD
of FURTHER DETAILS since the 2nd verse either confirms
the first verse or typically adds FURTHER DETAILS to
the first verse

EXAMPLE 1: Gn32-29a
-------------------------------
Gn32-29 describing the outcome of the wrestle
of Jacob and the Angel states the Angels admission
of defeat
--------------------------------
You will no longer be NAMED JACOB
but rather be named ISRAEL
for you have FOUGHT with Man and Angels
and succeeded
---------------------------------

Rashi explains the capped phrase NAMED JACOB
by citing an OTHER VERSE, Gn27-36 which explains
WHY Jacob was NAMED Jacob. Recall that the Biblical
Hebrew root for Jacob, is Ayin Kuph Beth which means
to DOUBLE CROSS. Now examine Gn27-36 describing how
Jacob originally obtained the blessings and birthright
-------------------------------------------
And Esauv said: Did you call his name
JACOB=DoubleCross---
He has DoubleCrossed me twice
- he has taken my birthright
- now he has taken by blessing
-------------------------------------------

Esauv here alluded to
- Jacob 'stealing' the blessing by disguising
himself as Esauv
- Jacob getting the birthright by 'buying it from Esauv'
Here Jacob acted as the DoubleCrosser.

But now that Jacob
- had successfully lived with the crooked Laban
for 20 years
- had successfully fought with the angel
Now Jacob had EARNED the birthright and blessings.
Hence he was called FightFor since he had FoughtFor
and earned them.

There are futher comments on this Rashi. The require
the ALIGNMENT method and will be explained at
http://www.Rashiyomi.com/gn32-29b.htm

EXAMPLE 2: Gn38-25a
-------------------------------
Verses Gn38-24:25 discussing the
execution sentence of Tamar for committing
adultery states
-----------------------------------------
Judah said...TAKE HER OUT and EXECUTE HER
...she was TAKEN OUT
-----------------------------------------

The Rashi comment is simple
----------------------------------------
The phrase TAKEN OUT refers to TAKEN OUT
TO BE EXECUTED
----------------------------------------

Here Rashi uses the OTHER VERSE method.

COMMENTS
*1 Moses cleverly shows that Dt33-21 could equally refer to
- Gad who behaved righteously with Jews by fighting for them
- Moses who argued the case of the Jews before Gad

Rashi intends that BOTH interpretations are
simultaneously true
- The purpose of PROSE is to INFORM
- The purpose of POETRY is to EVOKE

*2 The following background will help understand Dt33-21
- Gad was satisfied with the trans-Jordan lands
of the conquered land of Sichon and Og
- But Moses argued that if they just inherited these
lands it would be unfair to the rest of the Jewish
people who had to fight a conquest of Israel
- So Gad offered to lead the conquest of Israel and
only then return to their trans-Jordan home

*3 The FIRST simple meaning of the text is that
- Yissachar Zevulun had partnership of
- farmer sea farer for purposes of
- produce export

But in their spare time BOTH YISSACHAR/ZEVULUN needed to
study calendar making in order to
- navigate the sea
- plan planting/sowing seasons.

Hence the SECOND simple meaning of the text is that
- Yissachar Zevulun had partnership of
- seaons calculation star navigation
and were experts in calendar laws which in Jewish law
is considered a deep part of Scholarship.

Note: The simple meaning of the text as imparted by the
above OTHER VERSES is that BOTH
- Zevulun and Yisachar engaged in Torah/Calendar study
- Zevulun and Yisachar engaged in business
Judaism advocates combining Torah study with business

*4 Interestingly Rashi on Gn06-16 offers TWO interpretations of
-----------------------------
Make a LIGHT for the ark
-----------------------------
- Opinion 1: LIGHT=SPARKLING GEM (To scatter light)
- Opinion 2: LIGHT=Window

However Gn08-06b seems to prove that OPINION 2 is
correct.

How then do we explain Rashi's 1st opinion? Simple!
--------------------------------------------------
- Opinion 1: LIGHT=Window+Sparkling Gem(to intensify light)
- Opinion 2: LIGHT=Window (Without any Gem to scatter light)
--------------------------------------------------

This is an exemplary method for approaching Rashi--we make
both opinions defensible and reasonable!

*5 The Generation of the Tower wished to
- Build a tall tower
- Make a NAME for themselves
So that the Society (vs God) could protect the individual

Rashi sees the person whose name is
---------------
Wing-Name
---------------
as one of the leaders of the Tower builders
- he was interested in Making a NAME for himself
- he was interested in HEIGHT/VISIBILITY (=WING)

This is slightly conjectural (no further supportive
proof is provided. The point to emphasize is that
Rashi is using the OTHER VERSE method.

*6 Laban paid Jacob in SHEEP not in cash. So eg if Laban
gave Jacob SPECKLED sheep and the SPECKLED sheep were
reproducing prolifically then Laban changed Jacobs
wages to some other type of SHEEP so that Jacob
should not make too much money.

*7 Jacob previously obtained blessings by DOUBLE CROSSING
and DEVIOUS METHODS He
- Obtained the birthright from Esauv because he asked
Esauv to sell it to him
- He obtained the blessings from Isaac by disguising
himself as Esauv

Hence he was originally named DOUBLE-CROSS (Jacob in
Hebrew means DOUBLE-CROSS).

But now that Jacob survived Laban for 20 years and
fought with the Guardian Angel of Esauv and won, Jacob
had a LEGITIMATE right to the birthright and blessings
Hence he is called FOUGHT-FOR vs DOUBLE-CROSS (The Hebrew
word ISRAEL means FOUGHT AND WON)

The Rashi on Gn32-29a has two comments. The first comment
is a reference to an OTHER VERSE. The Second comment is
derived from an ALIGNMENT and is presented in

SUCCINCT SUMMARY
----------------
All Rashis clarify the meaning of a verse.
Most Rashis clarify the meaning of verses by
- explaining MEANING including SYMBOLIC meaning
- using GRAMMAR of verbs, sentences or FORMATTING
- using GRAMMAR of paragraphs (STYLE), or
- comparisons with OTHER VERSES including ALIGNMENTS,
CONTRADICTORY VERSES, DATABASE inquiries

If however Rashi clarifies the meaning of a verse
- by making reasonable background assumptions
- add computations or
- exhibiting diagrams
then we say Rashi has used the SPREADSHEET method.
The term SPREADSHEET typically refers to COMPUTATIONAL
clarifications--we however have used it to refer to
any type of NON-VERSE clarification whether it is
- numerical
- geometric
- background fill-in.

Todays examples illustrate the above.

EXAMPLE 1:Gn38-25a
-------------------
Gn38-25 discussing Jacob's travel's home states
-----------------------------------
....and his family went over the river...but
JACOB STAYED ALONE BEHIND....
-----------------------------------

Rashi comments
-------------------------------------------
Presumably he STAYED BEHIND to check for
forgotten items
-------------------------------------------

Here Rashi uses typical behaviors of travellers
to explain why Jacob stayed behind. Rashi's comment
does not emanate from WORD NUANCES or GRAMMAR but
rather emanates from awareness of REAL WORLD behavior
Since Rashi FILLS IN the text based on typical
REAL WORLD behavior we say Rashi uses the SPREADSHEET
method.

EXAMPLE 2: Gn38-23b
-------------------
Gn38-23 discussing the attempts by Judah to
collect his collateral and pay a harlot states
-----------------------------------------
Judah said: 'Let her keep the collateral'
LEST WE BE DISGRACED
-----------------------------------------

Rashi comments
----------------------------------------
If we keep on seeking to pay 'the prostitute'
then we
- are advertising that we had business with
a prostitute
- people will look on us as 'people who go
to prostitutes'
- we will be disgraced, since people will
think of us this way
----------------------------------------

Here Rashi explains the consequent DISGRACE
to continued attempts of payment by using
TYPICAL REAL WORLD attitudes about prostitutes.
Hence we say he uses the SPREADSHEET METHOD,
the FILL IN submethod.

COMMENTS
*1 Rashi literally says
---------------------------------------
The waters of the well rose for Abraham
---------------------------------------

We have interpreted this broadly
---------------------------------------
Abraham knew the hours when it was easiest
to obtain good well water
---------------------------------------

Hence BECAUSE Abraham knew the well he
could feed his sheep properly resulting
in healthier sheep.

Avimelech, by taking the sheep acknowledged
that the sheep were a gift worthy of a king.
This implied that Abraham knew the ins and outs
of the well water and was the true owner of the well

SUCCINCT SUMMARY
----------------
One of Rashis 10 main tasks is to explain
GRAMMAR the same way modern Hebrew books
explain GRAMMAR. We call this the Rashi GRAMMAR rule.
Rashi had three broad sub-rules in explaining GRAMMAR

(1) A major component of Hebrew GRAMMAR are the rules
governing conjugations of VERBS, or HEBREW ROOTS.
There are 7 grammatical modes with half a dozen
parameters: tense, person, gender, plurality,
connective words...

(2) Another component of GRAMMAR deals with
PREFIXES-SUFFIXES and other letters, or small words,
that indicate changes in meanings. This PREFIX-SUFFIX
subrule includes the rules governing the rules of
plural, gender, pronouns etc. We are still making
discoveries of PREFIX-SUFFIX rules today.

(3) Finally a more advanced part of GRAMMAR deals
with the rules of entire SENTENCES. The SENTENCE
rules includes the rules governing sentence order,
apposition, and compound sentences

Today we look at two examples of use of the APPOSITION
RULE.

EXAMPLE 1: Gn11-31a
-------------------
Gn11-31a states
----------------------------------------------
And TERACH took
- ABRAM his son, and
- LOT the son of Haran his grandson, and
- SARAI his daughter-in-law, his son Abram’s wife;
and THEY went forth with THEM
from Ur of the Chaldeans,
to go to the land of Canaan; ....
----------------------------------------------

Rashi comments on the CAPPED pronouns
------------------------------------
THEY (Terach and Abram) went forth
with THEM(Lot and Sarai)
------------------------------------

In other words Rashi is interpreting the
verse as follows
------------------------------------
And TERACH and ABRAM
went forth with LOT and SARAI
from Ur of Chaldeans to go to the
land fo Canaan
------------------------------------

Because the referents of the Pronouns
are introduced as a list before mention
of the pronouns we say that the APPOSITION
principle is being used.

EXAMPLE 2: Gn21-14b
---------------------------------
Gn21-14b literally says
---------------------------------
And Abraham rose up early in the morning,
and took bread, and a bottle of water,
and gave it to Hagar,
- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -
putting IT on her shoulder, AND THE CHILD,
- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -
and sent her away; and she departed,
and wandered in the wilderness of Beersheba.
---------------------------------

Rashi uses the APPOSITION principle on the
CAPPED words as follows
---------------------------------------
And Abraham rose up early in the morning,
and took bread, and a bottle of water,
and gave it to Hagar,
- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -
putting IT AND THE CHILD on her shoulder,
- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -
and sent her away; and she departed,
and wandered in the wilderness of Beersheba.
---------------------------------------

LIST705a summarizes these example and other examples
using APPOSITION.
ITEM DETAIL

RASHI WORKBOOK PRINCIPLE #9
SEE BELOW LIST075a
List of verses with Use of APPOSITION
LIST075a
(C) Dr Hendel, Jan-04

List of verses with Use of APPOSITION
VERSE WORDS IN APPOSITION IN VERSE are CAPPED*1
Gn11-31a TERACH took ABRAM,& SARAI/LOT: THEY went with THEM
Gn21-14b took a bottle of water--put IT on shoulder & CHILD
Gn12-17b God plagued PHAROH and HIS HOUSEHOLD with PLAGUES
Gn14-05a And the CHORI: in THEIR mountain: SEIR
Nu13-26b Spys brought report TO LEADERS and TO CONGREGATION
Dt10-15a God chose the THEIR PROGENY, YOU, from all nations
Nu34-06a The Mediteranean Sea... is the WESTERN BORDER
Nu04-49a By Gods order were census act & CENSUSES OF GOD*2
Gn19-12b WHO ELSE is with you--CHILDREN IN-LAWS--leave city
Gn14-23a FROM THREAD TO SHOELACE...If I take ANYTHING
Ex23-33a Dont intermarry lest you SIN--ie SERVE OTHER GODS
Isa63-7 I will remember GODS GRACE--ie HIS PRAISES
Ps147-9 God gives ANIMALS food-(even) to RAVENS that pray
Gn01-29a I God give to MAN plant food---& to the ANIMALS
Lv06-13a This is the INAUGURATION SACRIFICE-DAILY MNCH
COMMENTS
*1 So the verse should be read with all the CAPPED words
brought together. For example Gn14-23a is UNDERSTOOD as
-----------------------------------------------------
If I take ANYTHING---FROM THREAD TO SHOELACE-from you
-----------------------------------------------------

*2 So the Biblical text
--------------------
he CENSUSED them
--------------------
refers to the ACT of census.

The Biblical text
----------------------
CENSUSES OF GOD TO MOSES
----------------------
would refer to the CENSUS categories, Age 30-50, that
God ordered Moses.
