SUCCINCT SUMMARY ---------------- One of Rashi's 10 main goals is explaining word meaning similar to what a dictionary might do. Rashi had 10 vehicles by which to explain word meaning. Rashi will sometimes explain word meaning by methods common to all languages such as naming by FORM, FUNCTION, FEEL etc Today we study naming items by EXAGGERATION, a techniques common to all languages. For example BREAKFAST refers to the day-s first meal; it is the meal where you BREAK your FAST. Similarly the SKY-SCRAPER is pictured as SCRAPING the SKY. Here are some Biblical examples of EXAGGERATION. EXAMPLE 1 --------- Ex21-03 If he comes IN-HIS-BODY RASHI: IN-HIS-BODY-ONLY--that is, single EXAMPLE 2 --------- Lv19-20a If she is WINTERED to a man RASHI: WINTERED--that is engaged (COLD vs the warmth of marriage with full relations) EXAMPLE 3 --------- Gn33-13a The animals are YOUNG ON ME RASHI: Like human infants that have to be CARRIED ON ONES SHOULDER LIST972a below summarizes these examples.

SUCCINT SUMMARY: ---------------- One of Rashis 10 main goals is the explanation of grammar similar to the explanations we find in modern textbooks. We call this the Rashi rule of GRAMMAR. In todays posting we deal with the grammatical rules governing DEVELOPMENT in paragraphs and chapters: Given a paragraph or chapter THEME, what types of sentences can exist in that paragraph or chapter and what are their relations to the central theme? We call this the rashi subrule of CONSECUTIVE PARAGRAPHS. Rashi knew 3 means of relating consecutive sentences or consecutive paragraphs in a paragraph or chapter: - CAUSE / ENABLEMENT - CONTRAST - UNIFYING THEME, SEQUENCE. Today we study the causal method EXAMPLE 1: Gn33-04a ------------------- Gn33-01:04 describing the meeting of Jacob and Esauv after a 20 year separation states ------------------------------------------- Jacob divided up his people - the maids (and children) came first and BOWED - then Leah and children came and BOWED - then Rachel and children came and BOWED - then he came and bowed 7 times - - And Esauv ran and HUGGED him ------------------------------------------- Rashi ------------------------------ The HUG was CAUSED by all the bowings indicating affection ------------------------------ EXMAPLE 2: Gn37-04a ------------------- Gn37-04 discussing the relationship of Joseph and his brothers states ----------------------------------- - and they HATED HIM - and they could not say HELLO to him ----------------------------------- Rashi sees the two sentences (HATE, NO HELLO) as CAUSAL (BECAUSE they hated him they couldn't say hello). Rashi further notes ----------------------------------------------- Many people disguise their hatred by acting polite socially. So if the Bible tells us that the brothers did not say hello we can infer some good personality characteristics (honesty, lack of hypocrosy) ----------------------------------------------- LIST061a gives other examples of paragraphs that develop CAUSALLY

*1 Thus "whoever see the humiliating Adulterous wife rite" will be so shocked that he will abstain from wine Similarly "Judah advised his brothers to sell Joseph" and so when they regretted it they blaimed him and he had to "separate from them." Similarly "Sarah died" from the shock that "Abraham offered Isaac." *2 In other words because the snake saw Adam and Eve naked therefore he became Jealous and wanted Adam killed so he could marry Eve. ALthough this sounds a bit wild there is strong supporting evidence. Gn04-01 uses the past perfect form And Adam HAD BEEN FAMILIAR with his wife & they had a child" So the sequence of chapters is Adam was lonely God makes Eve Adam and Eve are naked ------------------------"Snake tempts Eve" Adam has a child with Eve Thus the sequence of chapters (Naked--->child) is clearly interrupted by the Snake story. *3 As explained above Rashi sees these two views as complementary - First they drank wine and got drunk - While drunk they thought it permissable to offer sacrifices which should not be offered Hence they died for both crimes *4 Rashi explains the Causal connection - when the masses see that God EVEN kills the righteous for sins - then they are aware how they must also observe Gods commandments - This leads to more honor for God *5 So GOOD NEWS facilitates/causes SMOOTH TRAVEL(Rashi) *6 The full sequence of chapters is as follows -------------------------------------------- - Gn31 God orders Jacob to return to his fathers house - Gn32 But Jacob is afraid of Being with Brother Esauv - Gn33 Jacob journeys instead to Succoth - Gn34 Dinah gets raped - Gn35 God tells Jacob to return to BethEl ------------------------------------------- Rashi notes that ----------------------------- If Jacob had IMMEDIATELY fulfilled the order of Travelling to his fathers house he wouldnt have stayed in Succoth and his Daughter would not have gotten raped. ------------------------------ Thus Rashi sees a CAUSAL connection between the chapters. Dinah was raped because Jacob did not IMMEDIATELY fulfill the prophetic order. Note Rashi expresses the same theme ------------------------------------------------- Because he delayed doing the prophecy immediately therefore he was punished that certain bad occurrences happened to him ------------------------------------------------- Rashi expresses this same theme on Gn35-22a where we find that Reuven inteferred with his fathers marital life. *7 Rashi can be better understood with the EXPORT-IMPORT LAW of logic. The EXPORT-IMPORT law states that ---------------------------------------------------- IF [it rains] then if [I go out] THEN [I will get wet] ---------------------------------------------------- has the same meaning as ---------------------------------------------------- IF [it rains] and [I go out] THEN [I will get wet] ---------------------------------------------------- In other words Rashi identifies the two sentence forms - IF p THEN IF q THEN r - IF p & q THEN r This identification of NESTED CONDITIONALS with a CONJUNCTIVE HYPOTHESIS is called the EXPORT-IMPORT law. The actual Biblical text reads --------------------------------------------- The cattle is young AND they will be pushed one day AND they will die --------------------------------------------- Rashi simply points out (Using EXPORT-IMPORT) that we can interpret this as either --------------------------------------------- [IF] The cattle is young AND they will be pushed one day THEN they will die --------------------------------------------- or --------------------------------------------- IF The cattle is young IF they will be pushed one day THEN they will die --------------------------------------------- The above two translations use the well known Biblical principle that the Hebrew letter VAV can refer to any connective. *8 In other words he - 1st affirmed a vow of his wife - then annuled it (which he had no right to) - If she now sins (Because she was mislead into thinking the vow is annuled) - then HE bears the sin/punishment In other words BECAUSE he misled her he must pay for the sin. *9 The causality of these verses reinforce each other - Gn13-14 EXPLICITLY states that God promised Abe Israel AFTER Lot separated from him - Gn13-07 states that Abe and Lot faught WHILE the Canaanites were still in the land. So Rashi simply puts the two verses together - Lot felt HE COULD USE ISRAEL land even though the CANAANITES still owned it. Lot felt this way because the land was promised to Abraham eventually. By contrast Abraham refused to use the land UNTIL it was actually given to him.
*10 Rashi also states -------------------------------------------------- The HEAVY DRIVING (that God made the Egyptians do by removing chariot wheel) was a punishment for their making HEAVY their hearts -------------------------------------------------- I would strengthen these associations -------------------------------------------------- The HEAVY DRIVING is a punishment for the HEAVY work that the Egyptians placed on the Jews -------------------------------------------------- These comments of Rashi or me also indicate -- HEAVY DRIVING causes/facilitated -- Egyptians seeing that God was fighting for them Indeed: We know that one of the way God fights is to punish people according to what they have done (See Rashi on Ex18-11- Jethro said: Now I know that God is the true God because He returns to people what they have done) Hence this particular punishment (making the Egyptians drive heavy vs killing them) showed the Egyptians (CAUSED them to be aware) that God was fighting. *11 Hence the Rashi - Laban was interested in the possibility of becoming rich from Abraham. *12 Presumably each city had its own method of preserving food (e.g. use natural nutrients in the fields). Hence the second sentence of the verse HE STORED EACH CITIES FOOD NEAR IT is seen as ENABLING the first sentence HE STORED THE FOOD OF THE SEVEN YEARS *13 (Rashi) "And the cloud departed from off the Tent"ENABLES and ALLOWS "and behold Miriam had become leprous." An analogy would be King angry at one of his subjects. The King would leave the room BEFORE punishment began since it is disrespectful to degrade a subject of the King in his presence. Similarly God, the King, had to depart ("The cloud departed")before Miryam could be punished. *14 BECAUSE the Levites do the Temple work there will be no need for Jews to enter the Temple. This prevents a plague But if they did enter the temple they would be liable to a death penalty at the hands of heaven. [See Nu18-07 for an explicit statement that "strangers [non levites/priests] coming near to the Temple die at the hands of heaven.] -------------------------------------------------- *15 Rashi makes an inference from this causation ----------------------------------------------- Many people disguise their hatred by acting polite socially. So if the Bible tells us that the brothers did not say hello we can infer some good personality characteristics (honesty, lack of hypocrosy) ----------------------------------------------- |

SUCCINCT SUMMARY ---------------- All Rashis clarify the meaning of a verse. Most Rashis clarify the meaning of verses by - explaining MEANING including SYMBOLIC meaning - using GRAMMAR of verbs, sentences or FORMATTING - using GRAMMAR of paragraphs (STYLE), or - comparisons with OTHER VERSES including ALIGNMENTS, CONTRADICTORY VERSES, DATABASE inquiries If however Rashi clarifies the meaning of a verse - by making reasonable background assumptions - add computations or - exhibiting diagrams then we say Rashi has used the SPREADSHEET method. The term SPREADSHEET typically refers to COMPUTATIONAL clarifications--we however have used it to refer to any type of NON-VERSE clarification whether it is - numerical - geometric - background fill-in. Todays examples illustrate the above. EXAMPLE 1:Gn37-29a ------------------- Gn37-19:30 discusses ------------------------------------------ - the plot of Joseph's brothers to kill him - Reuven's suggestion to place him in a pit so he could return him to his father - Judah's suggestion to sell him as a slave - Reuven's return to the pit and his shock at not finding him there ------------------------------------------- If this were a TV show or Movie the viewer would see scenes - Scene 1: Joe approaches his brothers - Scene 2: His brothers plot to kill him - Scene 3: Reuven suggests placing in pit - Scene 4: Judah suggests selling him - Scene 5: Reuven returns to pit but does not find Joseph Each TV scene would be distinct. We for example would not be told where Reuven was while Judah was suggesting (and implementing) the sale. A skillful TV producer knows how to combine scenes without the viewer aware of the sudden shifts. A skillful TV producer also knows how to avoid excessive FILL-INs so that the viewer FILLS IN material themselves and "participates" in the viewing. Rashi fills in with background ----------------------------------- - Perhaps the brothers rotated visiting father and this was his day - Perhaps he spent time fasting each day because of what he did with his father's concubine ----------------------------------- The fact that Rashi does not reach a conclusion is typical. One cannot be sure what happened. One can only conjecture. Both of the above conjectures are reasonable. Thus the "flavor" of the SRPEADSHEET method is different than the "flavor" of say the WORD MEANING or GRAMMAR methods. The SPREADSHEET method, by its very nature is more conjectural and more subjective. Another approach to this Rashi would use the CONTRADICTION method - Reuven tried to save Joseph by placing him in a pit - But when Judah tried to sell Joseph Reuven did not stop him The resolution of the CONTRADICTION is that Reuven wasn't there when Judah suggested sale. Rashi then supplements this explanation by giving reasonable explanations of where Reuven went. Note: That the above uses the TWO STAGES method of CONTRADICTION resolution. EXAMPLE Gn37-31a ----------------- Gn37-31 discusses the cover up for the sale of Joseph. The brothers --------------------------------- slaughtered a GOAT and dipped Joseph's coat in blood; they then sent the blood-covered coat to their father and asked him to identify if this was Joseph's coat and he had been murdered --------------------------------- Rashi uses the SPREADSHEET method and gives background information on why a GOAT had been slaughtered -------------------------------------- GOAT blood resembles HUMAN blood -------------------------------------- So Rashi explains that the brothers made sure that their father thought Joseph dead. Interestingly most Rashi commentators ignore the fact that Jacob was an experienced shepard. He would immediately recognize non-human blood (e.g. sheep's blood)since he had experience with animal losses from attacks. LIST690z below presents other Rashis using the SPREADSHEET METHOD

*1 Rashi literally says --------------------------------------- The waters of the well rose for Abraham --------------------------------------- We have interpreted this broadly --------------------------------------- Abraham knew the hours when it was easiest to obtain good well water --------------------------------------- Hence BECAUSE Abraham knew the well he could feed his sheep properly resulting in healthier sheep. Avimelech, by taking the sheep acknowledged that the sheep were a gift worthy of a king. This implied that Abraham knew the ins and outs of the well water and was the true owner of the well |

SUCCINCT SUMMARY ---------------- One of Rashis 10 main goals is the explanation of GRAMMAR the same way modern grammar books explain grammar. In todays posting we review how PRONOUNS may refer to either - the LAST MENTIONED object or person, or - the person or object defined by CONTEXT These Rashis can often be stated in RIDDLE form and given humorous delivery. EXAMPLE Gn37-22a ---------------- Gn37-22 discusses how Reuven, the eldest of the brothers, tried to save Joseph from murder by throwing him in a pit --------------------------------------------- Text Who --------------------------- -------------- And REUVEN said Dont murder Throw him in this pit so that HE could save him... Reuven ---------------------------------------------- In other words if the verse stated --------------------------------------------- Text --------------------------- And REUVEN said - "Dont murder - Throw him in this pit - so that I can save him... " ---------------------------------------------- Then it would have been one entire citation. However Rashi punctuates the verse as follows --------------------------- And REUVEN said - "Dont murder - Throw him in this pit " - so that HE can save him... ---------------------------------------------- The statement "so that HE can save him" was not part of Reuven's statement But rather a comment by the AUTHOR of the text indicating why Reuven made this statement (That is, Reuven was not trying to murder Joseph but stall off the confrontation so he could bring him back to his father). Although we have classified this Rashi as pronoun reference a more precise statement is that Rashi uses the PRONOUN REFERENCE ("he" vs "I") to delineate - which part of the verse is a quote - which part of the verse is a comment. LIST090a presents other verses where Rashi's main point is about REFERENCE.

*1 To clarify the use of this list let us review the first example. The verse cites various people - Datan, Aviram - On The verse then says these were the sons of Reuven This is ambiguous. - Were DATAN/AVIRAM sons of Reuven - Was ON the son of Reuven. Rashi points out that ALL of them were sons of Reuven To clarify this we capitalize DATAN / AVIRAM / ON and then clarify SONS OF REUVEN. The last column then explains that the CAPPED PHRASE, SONS OF REUVEN refers to both DATAN and AVIRAM. *2 Note the ambiguity-- the THEM refers to YOUR MOB. *3 Abraham made 3 requests (a)Deal with Ephron (B) pay for field (c) Pay full price. Ephrons no refers back to PAYING for the field. This is proven by the next phrase ---------------------------------------- EPHRON: I will GIVE you the field ---------------------------------------- *4 The Talmud cites both views (SOUL OF AGRRIEVED/OWNER) without coming to a conclusion. The controversy center on whether - pronouns refer to the LAST MENTIONED NOUN (So here the RANSOM OF HIS SOUL refers to the OWNERS soul) - or do pronouns refer to whatever is defined by CONTEXT Since killing a slave requires paying a flat fee of 30 units of currency (The abstract worth of slaves) it follows that RANSOM OF HIS SOUL would refer to the value of the AGGRIEVEDs soul. *5 The verse could equally mean --------------------------------------------- God took the Jews out of Egypt BEFORE HIMSELF --------------------------------------------- Rashi could then translate this idiom as meaning WITH GOD LEADING. This is justified (as Rashi points out with an OTHER VERSE--Ex14-19. The verse could also mean ------------------------------------------------- God took the Jews out of Egypt BEFORE THE FATHERS ------------------------------------------------- This would echo the theme that God redeemed the Jews FOR THE SAKE of the PATRIARCHS. Again an OTHER VERSE justifies this...e.g. Dt09-05*10 *6 Rashis point is that - this is not one long quote of Reuven --------------------------------------------------- Reuven said "Thow him in pit so **I** can save him" --------------------------------------------------- - Rather this is a quote with an explanatory comment by the Author on the reason for the quote -------------------------------------------------- Reuven said "Throw him in pit" so that He could save him --------------------------------------------------
*10 It might be tempting to identify the referent of the pronoun using plurality since God is singular and the Patriarchs are plural. But as Rashi points out we can refer to a GROUP in the singular connoting a unified front. Rashi points out that in this very verse Dt04-37 we have a SINGULAR reference to the Patriarchs ---------------------------------------------- Therefore he chose you their seed after HIM ---------------------------------------------- Here the word HIM refers to the Patriarchs. |
