SUCCINCT SUMMARY
----------------
A powerful but simple Rashi method is the CITATION or CROSS-
REFERENCING of an OTHER VERSE for the purpose of adding
FURTHER DETAILS to a verse we are studying. We call this
the OTHER VERSE method. There are three submethods to the
OTHER VERSE method.

If the verse actually CITES or refers to an OTHER VERSE we
call this the SUBMETHOD of CITATION.

If the OTHER VERSE explains the meaning of
some term in the first verse we call this the SUBMETHOD
of MEANING.

If the first verse does not cite an other verse and if
no meaning is explained then we call this the SUBMETHOD
of FURTHER DETAILS since the 2nd verse either confirms
the first verse or typically adds FURTHER DETAILS to
the first verse

EXAMPLE Gn48-16b
----------------
Gn48-13:16 states
-------------------------------------------------
---Joe took two children, MENASSEH and EPHRAIM....
---Jacob blessed them
---May God bless the CHILDREN [Menasshe and Ephraim]
-------------------------------------------------

Here Rashi identifies the CHILDREN with
Menasshe and Ephraim based on the OTHER VERSE.

EXAMPLE Gn48-19a
----------------
Gn48-17 states
----------------------------------------------
-- Joe saw father switched eldest and youngest
-- Joe protested ...this is eldest....
-- Father said "I know [that he is eldest]"
----------------------------------------------

Here Rashi clarifies WHAT Jacob knew--that the
child was the eldest---based on an OTHER VERSE.

EXAMPLE Gn48-02b
----------------
Gn48-01:09 states
--------------------------------------------
-- Joe's father was sick
-- Joe took his two children [to be blessed]
-- ...
-- Jacob said Bring them to me and I will bless them
--...
-- and Jacob blessed them saying....
--------------------------------------------

Here Rashi clarifies WHY Joeseph took his
two children---to be blessed---based on an OTHER
VERSE which describes the outcome of the meeting

EXAMPLES Gn43-14e Gn43-14f
--------------------------
Gn42-36 states
----------------------------
Jacob said you have CHILDLESSED me
- Joseph is not here
- Shimon is not here
- Benjamin will be taken
- all is on me
-----------------------------

Rashi uses this OTHER VERSE to explain Gn43-14
-------------------------------------
God will give you mercy and
return Shimon and Benjamin
and I as I have been CHILDLESSED [Joseph and Shimon]
might become CHILDLESS[loss of Benjamin]
--------------------------------------

EXAMPLE Gn45-15b
----------------
Gn45-15 states
---------------------------------
He kissed his brothers and cried
and AFTERWARDS his brothers spoke to him
---------------------------------

Rashi explains this by cross referencing an
OTHER VERSE, Gn45-02 which explains why the
brothers did not speak to him yet
-------------------------------------------
Joseph said to his brothers I am Joseph...
but his brothers couldn't answer him because
they were Frightened
-------------------------------------------

Rashi's point is that only after the kissing
and assurance that good had resulted from the
sale of Joseph did the brothers talk.
