SUCCINCT SUMMARY ---------------- A powerful but simple Rashi method is the CITATION or CROSS- REFERENCING of an OTHER VERSE for the purpose of adding FURTHER DETAILS to a verse we are studying. We call this the OTHER VERSE method. There are three submethods to the OTHER VERSE method. If the verse actually CITES or refers to an OTHER VERSE we call this the SUBMETHOD of CITATION. If the OTHER VERSE explains the meaning of some term in the first verse we call this the SUBMETHOD of MEANING. If the first verse does not cite an other verse and if no meaning is explained then we call this the SUBMETHOD of FURTHER DETAILS since the 2nd verse either confirms the first verse or typically adds FURTHER DETAILS to the first verse EXAMPLE Gn04-04b ---------------- Verse Gn04-04b states ----------------------- God TURNED to Abel's sacrifice.... ----------------------- Rashi clarifies the CAPPED WORD, TURNED, By CROSS REFERENCING another verse, Lv09-23:24 ---------------------------------------- [....after the CONSECRATION offering] Aaron and Moses blessed the people ...and the honor of God appeared to the nation [Prophecy] and a FIRE CAME FROM GOD AND DEVOURED THE OFFERING and the nation sang ---------------------------------------- Hence the Rashi ----------------------------------------- For God to TURN WITH FAVOR to a sacrifice means for a FIRE OF GOD TO DESCEND and devour it ----------------------------------------- EXAMPLE Gn48-16a ---------------- In verse Gn48-16 Jacob speaks about --------------------------------- THE ANGEL WHO SAVED ME FROM EVIL. --------------------------------- Rashi clarifies who this ANGEL WHO SAVED JACOB is by cross referencing Gn31-11:13 --------------------------------- When Laban [my boss] tried to deceive me the ANGEL OF GOD came to me in a dream and advised me... --------------------------------- Hence the Rashi --------------------------------- The ANGEL WHO SAVED ME cross references the angel who saved Jacob from Laban --------------------------------- EXAMPLE Ex04-18 --------------- Ex04-18, after God had told Moses to redeem the Jews, describes Moses --------------------------------------- ...returning and going to Jethro his father in law and stating "Give me permission to please to return to Egypt to visit my brothers" --------------------------------------- Rashi explains this request for permission by CROSS REFERENCING, Gn31-26,53 describing -------------------------------------- ...Jacob fled from his father in law ...his father-in-law pursues after Jacob... ...his father-in-law states 'Why did you leave steathily and conduct my daughters like captives of war -------------------------------------- We infer from this passage that there is an assumed obligation to by loyal to ones father in law. Moses expressed this obligation by requesting permission before leaving. Note: Rashi uses exaggeration techniques: He assumed Jacob took an OATH---this is reasonable - (After all Moses fled from Egypt and wanted to go back and Jethro wanted to protect his daughters from Moses' social obligations). However this is not necessary It is only necessary to assume that Moses had an "understanding" with his father-in-law that he would not go back. Hence when God ordered him Moses was polite and asked permission. EXAMPLE Ex13-13d ---------------- Verse Ex13-13 states -------------------------------------- ...redeem all donkeys with sheep... and all humans you should REDEEM -------------------------------------- Rashi provides FURTHER DETAILS to the CAPPED WORD, REDEEM from Nu18-16 ------------------------------------- And your redemptions when one month old 5 dollars in Temple currency, 20 quarters ------------------------------------- Hence the Rashi ------------------------------ The REDEMPTION in Ex13-13 is a $5 dollar REDEMPTION ------------------------------ LIST210t summarizes the above examples, provides further detail and lists other examples of verse pairs with one verse illuminating an OTHER VERSE | ||
