SUCCINCT SUMMARY
----------------
Rashi frequently makes powerful inferences from
- the ALIGNMENT,
- that is, the word by word comparison,
of almost identical verses. The minor variations
between these almost similar verses suggests nuances
and differences or even meaning. We
call this the Rashi rule of ALIGNMENT

-When Rashi identifies two cases from the ALIGNMENT we call
this the Rashi subrule of TWO CASES

-When Rashi infers nuances from the variations between the
almost similar verses (or verse phrases) we call this the
Rashi subrule of NUANCES.

-When Rashi infers MEANING from the ALIGNMENT of almost
identical phrases we call this the Rashi SUBRULE of MEANING.

Example 1,2: Ex15-05b
-------------------
Ex15 decribes the sinking in the sea
during the Exodus of Egypt Several
languages are used
---------------------------------------------------------------
VERSE TEXT DIFFRENCE 1 DIFFERENCE 2 Refers 2
--------- ---------------- --------- ------------ ------------
- Ex15-07 they're EATEN like STUBBLE Not so evil
- Ex15-05 they GO DOWN in the sea like STONE Middle evil
- Ex15-10 they SINK in ... like LEAD Evil leaders
---------------------------------------------------------------

Rashi notes the 3 comparisons - Stubble, stone, lead - and
the 3 words of destruction - eaten, go down, sink - and he
interprets these 3 cases symbolically to refer to 3 levels of
people
-----------------------------------------------
- The not so evil are like stubble they sink but
float back up and eventually fully sink
- The middle of the road evil sink straight down like stones
- The thoroughly evil go down heavily
------------------------------------------------

Although Rashi also uses SYMBOLIC interpretation the main thrust
of Rashi was the ALIGNMENT of the 3 phrases

LIST314t summarizes this ALIGNMENT

Example 2: Ex16-08a
--------------------
Ex16-08a discusses Gods response to the people's
request for Manna
----------------------------------------------
... God gives you
- MEAT in the EVENING to EAT
- BREAD in the MORNING for SAIETY
-----------------------------------------------

Rashi notes the two cases in the alignment
---------------------------------------------
- BREAD is a basic food and should be eaten to saiety
- MEAT is a luxury and should only be eaten but not to saiety
----------------------------------------------

Similarly Rashi notes
-----------------------------------------------
- They needed bread so God gave them bread in the EVENING
- But they had their own meat - so God gave them extra by MORNING
when it is troublesome to get it
------------------------------------------------

LIST314u summarizes this ALIGNMENT

Example 3: Ex18-24b
-------------------
Ex24-01:03 describes 3 levels of nearness to God
at the revelation
------------------------------------------
- Moses,Aaron,Nadav,Avihu,70 elders Go Up mountain, bow from afar
- Moses (but not them) Goes to cloud
- Nation Does not go up mountain
------------------------------------------

Rashi simply observes that their were three
levels of prophetic awareness as explicitly
indicated in the verses.

LIST314v summarizes this ALIGNMENT

Example 4: Ex15-11a
-------------------
Ex15-11a has an ALIGNED structure where the two
parts overlap with nuances
----------------------------------------------------------
Who is like you God, among the RAMS
WHo is like you --- ----- --- ---- grandeured in holiness
----------------------------------------------------------

Rashi simply points out how the two aligned verselets
complement each other
---------------------------------------------
RAMS in contrast to SHEEP connote the LEADERS
(See Ez17-13 for such SYMBOLIC USAGE)
---------------------------------------------

Again: Although Rashi uses SYMBOLIC means the
main thrust is from the ALIGNMENT of the verses.
