SUCCINCT SUMMARY ---------------- A powerful but simple Rashi method is the CITATION or CROSS- REFERENCING of an OTHER VERSE for the purpose of adding FURTHER DETAILS to a verse we are studying. We call this the OTHER VERSE method. There are three submethods to the OTHER VERSE method. If the verse actually CITES or refers to an OTHER VERSE we call this the SUBMETHOD of CITATION. If the OTHER VERSE explains the meaning of some term in the first verse we call this the SUBMETHOD of MEANING. If the first verse does not cite an other verse and if no meaning is explained then we call this the SUBMETHOD of FURTHER DETAILS since the 2nd verse either confirms the first verse or typically adds FURTHER DETAILS to the first verse EXAMPLE Ex03-18 --------------- In verse Ex03-18 God tells Moses -------------------------------------- Tell the Jews that the God of their fathers appeared has to me saying: I have VISITED on you what was done in Egypt --------------------------------------- Rashi cross references the CITATION from Gn50-24:25 --------------------------------------- Joseph told the Jews "God will VISIT you and you will bring my body up from here.".... --------------------------------------- Hence the Rashi comment ---------------------------------------- Gods statement in Ex03-18 that he has VISITED the Jews is a fullfilment of the PROPHECY in Gn50-24:25 that the Jews will be VISITED ---------------------------------------- EXAMPLE Ex04-22:23 ------------------ Verses Ex04-22:23 contain the prophecy God instructed Moses to deliver to Pharoh. The delivery of these prophecies is described over the next few chapters in Exodus. Rashi presents the CROSS-REFERENCED future CITATIONS. They are as follows --------------------------------------------------------------- VERSE TEXT VERSE CROSS REFERENCE ----- ----------------- ----- ----------------------- Ex04-22a Jews my 1stborn:ServeMe Ex05-01 Let my people serve Ex04-23a I said:Let them go Ex07-26 "Thus says God"... Ex04-23b I'll kill your 1stborn Ex11-04:09 10th plague:1st born --------------------------------------------------------------- I think Rashi clear. For example - The threat to kill Pharoh's 1st born was carried out when Moses brought the 10th plague the plague of the 1st born - The threat to tell Pharoh that "God said--Let my people go" is fulfilled when Moses on numerous occassions began a plague with "Thus says God." EXAMPLE Ex12-32a ----------------- In Verse Ex12-31:32a Pharoh tells Moses ------------------------------------ Get out of my country....also TAKE YOUR LIVESTOCK as you have requested ------------------------------------ The request to take LIVESTOCK cross references a CITATION from Ex10-25 ------------------------------------ You [Pharoh] will also give us UP offerings and SHARED-MEAL OFFERINGS that we may do for the Lord our God ------------------------------------ EXAMPLE Ex12-31d ---------------- In verse Ex12-31d Pharoh tells Moses and Aaron -------------------------------- Leave Egypt as YOU have spoken -------------------------------- Rashi clarifies this mean -------------------------- Leave without restrictions -------------------------- Rashi cites several verses where the difference of approach in allowance to leave between Moses and Pharoh is illustrated Ex10-08:11 states ---------------------------------------- Pharoh: Who will LEAVE Moses: Children and elders with cattle for a holiday Pharoh: Only Elders need go on a God-Holiday ----------------------------------------- Consequently, when Pharoh says GO AS YOU HAVE SAID the contrastive reference is to citations where Pharoh allowed leaving but with restrictions. EXAMPLE Ex12-35a ---------------- Verse Ex12-35a states ------------------------------------ And the Jews did as Moses SAID and they borrowed from Egypt silver and gold utensils and clothing ------------------------------------ Rashi sees the word SAID as a cross-reference to a CITATION. We find this CITATION in Ex11-02 -------------------------------------------- ....[Pharoh will soon send from Egypt...therefore] Please speak to the Jews...have them lend from their [Egyptian] friends silver and gold utensils and clothing -------------------------------------------- EXAMPLE Ex13-05b ---------------- Verse Ex13-05 states --------------------------------------- When God brings you to the land of the Canaanites....that HE SWORE TO YOUR FOREFATHERS TO GIVE YOU a land oozing with milk and fruit juices --------------------------------------- Rashi identifies the CAPPED PHRASE as a CITATION Rashi cites 3 VERSES, one for each forefather -- Gn15-18 for Abraham -- Gn26-03 for Isaac -- Gn28-13 for Jacob In each of these verses a promise is made to give the Jews Israel corresponding to the CITATION made in Ex13-05. LIST270a provides other examples of Rashis that identify CITATIONS. | ||
