SUCCINCT SUMMARY ---------------- One of Rashis 10 main methods is the explanation of meaning the same way a dictionary explains meaning. We call this the WORD MEANING method. ---------------------------------------------- Rashi had 10 vehicles to explain meaning. The SYNONYM submethod takes words with known meanings and shows the similarity and nuances in each term. ---------------------------------------------- Example 7: Ex21-35a ------------------- Ex21-35a discusses damages from a Goring ox --------------------------------------------- If an Ox ATTACK another ox ...payment... --------------------------------------------- Rashi distinguishes between GORE and ATTACK. The word ATTACK connotes attack with any organ (horns, feets etc). Example 8,9: Ex22-26a Ex22-26b ------------------------------- Ex22-26 discusses the Biblical requirement of returning a garment deposit for a loan ------------------------------------------- ...you must return the garment nightly... how else shall the borrower sleep.... ------------------------------------------- Rashi distinguishes several words for GARMENT in the verse - Garment - Poncho In other words, whether the lender took as a deposit a DISTINGUISHED or SLIP-ON garment, it must be returned. Example 10,11: Ex22-20a, Ex22-20b --------------------------------- Ex22-20 discussing the prohibition of causing emotional anguish to a convert states --------------------------------------------- A convert: Don't TEASE or SHOVE him --------------------------------------------- - TEASE can mean VERBALLY TEASE - TEASE can mean MONETARILY TEASE (a little extra overcharge) - SHOVE can mean PHYSICALLY SHOVE - SHOVE can mean ECONOMICALLY SHOVE (eg Shove him out of his property) Rashi observes ---------------------------------- The Torah prohibits both VERBAL and MONETARY attacks on the convert ---------------------------------- LIST955y presents other Rashis commenting on SYNONYMS | ||
