VERSES We use the following verses: Dt18-01:02 ------ The priests-levites shall not have portion-inheritance in Israel The Fires of God and His Inheritance they shall eat They will have no inheritance among his brothers God is His Inheritance as He has told him." DR. LEIBOWITZ-DR. BONCHECKS APPROACH ------------------------------------ Dr Leibowitz and Dr Boncheck focus on the fact that Rashi has a problem: Something is Bothering Rashi: Here is how I think their methods would apply to Dt18-01:02 QUESTIONS --------- 1)Why does it say"Priests will have fires AND inheritance of God 2)Why does it repeat TWICE "They will have no inheritance" ANSWERS ------- 1) FIRES of GOD=Sacrifices ::: Inheritance of God=Tithes Thus 2 phrases were used to indicate 2 types of Objects. 2) TWO inheritances are prohibited: The inheritance of Israel proper---and the inheritance of the transjordan by the Gad and Reuben tribes (therefore it says TWICE "no inheritance" to prohibit "Two inheritances") RABBI ISHMAEL---DR HENDELS APPROACH ----------------------------------- Rabbi Ishmael and Dr Hendel focus on the fact that a) The Torah uses a conversational approach-- it is therefore wrong to be picky on wording. b) However the Torah uses specific styles to indicate that examples should or should not be generalized. Here is an example on Dt18-01:02 STYLE: The Torah uses a GENERAL-PARTICULAR-GENERAL style ------ GENERAL: Priests should have no inheritance DETAILS: Priests have fires of God GENERAL: Priests should have no inheritance RULE: The GENERAL-DETAIL-GENERAL style requires generalizing ---- the DETAILS to **all similar** items APPLICATION ----------- SINCE Dt18-01:02 has a "general-detail-general" style, HENCE we are required to **generalize** the details. THEREFORE the Priests are entitled to **anything** that is similar to **fires of God** But the priests are prohibited from **anything** that resembles the contrasting **conquest of Israel** Thus Rabbi Ishmael and hence Rashi,-is-Simple!! Rashi is not being picky on words. He is rather responding to a particular style that requires generalization. It is the STYLE, not the repeated words, that causes the generalizations. True, Rashi confirms his generalization by referring to a cross referenced chapter (Nu18) but the emphasis is on the style not the repeated words. REALLY? CAN YOU PROVE YOUR METHOD IS PREFERRED? ---------------------------------------------- The perceptive reader will respond "But we still have the question 'Why did the Torah repeat twice NO INHERITANCE? Why did the Torah repeat FIRE OF GOD and INHERITANCE? Doesn't this show that the Leibowitz-Boncheck method has some validity? NO! For Rabbi Ishmael insists that "The Torah spoke in a conversational human style". We have already given a list of 9 Rashis where extra Biblical specificity is dismissed as irrelevant by Jewish Law: eg IF an OX gores an animal RASHI: If ANY ANIMAL causes damage Don't MUZZLE an OX while threshing RASHI: ANY animal Dont SHEAR 1stborn SHEEP WOOL or WORK with 1stborn OXEN RASHI: And similarly don't use OX LEATHER or WORK with SHEEP In short the essence of the Rabbi-Ishmael-Dr-Hendel approach is the emphasis on style vs problems and example-generalization vs questions USE OF DATABASE QUERIES TO EMPHASIZE STYLE ------------------------------------------ FOOTNOTE: In a similar manner if Rashi says something on every occurence of a word then he probably wasn't bothered by anything---he rather was responding to either a rule of style or rule of translation. It is for this reason that we have emphasized throughout our explanations. #*#*#*#*#*#*#*#*#*# (C) Dr Hendel, 2000 *#*#*#*#*#*#*#*#*#*#*#*#* VERSE: Dt20-03c RASHIS COVERED: Dt20-03c Dt20-03d Dt20-03e Dt20-03f Dt20-03g Dt18-01b Dt18-01c Dt18-01d Dt18-02a Dt18-02b Dt16-19a Dt16-19b Dt16-19c Dt16-19d Dt16-19e Dt16-20a BACKGROUND: ---------- We have several times used the principle of CLIMAX. According to this principle a sequence of 3 or more phrases should be perceived as climactically developing However I have also expressed the idea that any example of CLIMAX can be understood as an instance of the Rabbi Ishmael rules of style: According to Rabbi Ishmael, if DETAILS are given first FOLLOWED by a GENERALIZATION then we interpret the DETAILS broadly and generalize them. In such a case Rashi is learning what he does from the style NOT from the grammar. (A similar comment applies to a style of GENERAL PRINCIPLE---DETAILS---GENERAL). I therefore present some examples below which are best understood this way. I first state the rule and then give the examples. RULE ---- a) If 3 or more phrases can be organized as --DETAILS 1st --Followed by a GENERAL all inclusive category then we interpert the details broadly to include all similar cases. (This is called the Rabbi Ishmael style rule of DETAIL-GENERAL) b) Similarly if a collection of verses is organized as --a General concept --followed by several details --followed by a repetition of the general concept then we interpert the details broadly to include all similar cases. (This is called the Rabbi Ishmael style rule of GENERAL-DETAIL-GENERAL) NOTE: There are differences between DETAIL-GENERAL and GENERAL-DETAIL-GENERAL but these need not concern us at this time. EXAMPLES: (Of DETAIL--GENERAL styles) -------- EXAMPLE 1 --------- 1)Dt16-19:20 How to achieve a societal atmosphere of Justice? How do you achieve "JUSTICE JUSTICE PURSUE" ------------------------------------------------------------ THE FOLLOWING ARE DETAILS ------------------------- 1a) Don't harass VERDICTS (eg make an innocent person guilty) 1b) Don't harass LITIGANTS(eg smile at one;be formal with other) 1c) Don't harass YOURSELF(eg taking bribes even for true verdicts) THE FOLLOWING IS THE GENERAL IDEA --------------------------------- 1d) "Justice Justice Pursue" RASHI: A nice judicial atmosphere NOTES: ----- Dt16-19a "Don't distort justice" RASHI: Don't distort VERDICTS Dt16-19b "Don't recognize people"RASHI: eg smile to 1;frown to 2nd Dt16-19c:"Don't take Bribes" RASHI: Even for true verdicts ---------------------------------------------------------- Dt16-19d: "For bribes distorts sharp people Dt16-19e: and distorts words of righteous people *1 ---------------------------------------------------------- *1 Thus we see that Bribes distort both ---sharpness AND ---FORMULATION of verdict (ie WORDS of righteous people) (Eg You decided the verdict and someone then gives you a bribe to decide the verdict along the lines you just decided!! It is still prohibited to take the bribe as eg you might not forumlate the verdict in a way that is sympathetic to the loser OR you might, in sentencing, be harsher than usual) Dt16-20a "Justice Justice pursue"-- RASHI: A nice court and judicial atmosphere NOTE: ---- rashi on Dt16-20a also follows the rule of DOUBLE NOUNS (ie REPEATED NOUNS) EXAMPLE 2 --------- 2) Dt18-01:02 How do you achieve PRIESTLY-GODLY status How do you achieve "GOD IS MY INHERITANCE" ---------------------------------------------------- 2a) Exclusively participate in Godly Priestly Gifts ------Sacrifices (eg "Fire of God(Dt18-01)(Nu18-09)") ------Tithes, Terumah (eg Nu18-21:24) 2b) Don't participate in material gifts of God ------Conquest of Israel ------Conquest of Transjordan ------Religious wars NOTES ----- NOTE: This chapter has a GENERAL-DETAIL-GENERAL style This style requires GENERALIZATION of details GENERAL STATEMENTS--Priests don't inherit land ------------------ Dt18-01b "Priests have no portions" RASHI: In war Dt18-01c "Priests have no inheritance" RASHI: In Israel DETAIL STATEMENT--Priests do inherit sacrifices ---------------- Dt18-01d "Fires of God" RASHI: Sacrifices (Cf Nu18-09) Dt18-01e "Gods inheritance" RASHI: Tithes (Cf Nu18-21:24) GENERAL STATEMENTS--Priests don't inherit land ------------------ Dt18-02a "Priests have no inheritance" RASHI: In Transjordan Dt18-02b "As God has told him(the priests)"RASHI:Nu18-21:24 NOTE: Our emphasis in the derivation has been on the Biblical style of GENERAL:DETAIL:GENERAL which requires generalization. That is we have not emphasized being picky on repetition of phrases (such as FIRE OF GOD *and* INHERITANCE OF GOD or the repeated THE PRIEST SHALL NOT INHERIT). Rashi learns what he does from "the style" not from the "problem". Please see posting Dt18-01c in this issue (Volume 7 Number 11) which clearly explains the difference in approach between Rabbi-Ishmael--Dr-Hendel vs Dr-Leibowitz-Dr-Boncheck. EXAMPLE 3 Dt20-03 --------- 3) Dt20-03 What should you not be afraid of in a war ------------------------------------------------- 3a) One should not be afraid of enemy TRANSPORT ability 3b) One should not be afraid of enemy WEAPONS 3c) One should not be afraid of enemy COMMUNICATIONS 3d) One should not be afraid of enemy TROOP MORALE NOTES ----- *1 The Rashis on Dt20-03 list 4 components to a war Dt20-03c The 4 words in the verse correspond to 4 fears Dt20-03d "Dont be soft hearted" RASHI: From HORSE TRAMPLING Dt20-03e "Dont be afraid" RASHI: From sheild clapping Dt20-03f "Dont be hurried(?anxious)" RASHI: From horn blasts Dt20-03g "Dont be shattered" RASHI: From Troop cries Rashi does NOT derive these components from the words in Dt20-03 but rather from the explicit statements in Dt20-01. Here is the correspondence between Dt20-01 and Dt20-03 {LIST1} {The left column contains the 4 words of fear in Dt20-03. The next column contains the Rashis on these words followed by the associated military concept. As can be seen the Rashi does NOT correspond to the words (eg why should HORNS make you feel HURRIED while HORSES make you feel SOFT HEARTED). However the words in Rashi do correspond to the words in Dt20-01 (Eg HORSES corresponds to HORSES). Thus we have usage of the technique of other verses} Words in Rashi on Military Words in Dt20-03 Dt20-03 Concept Dt20-01 ------- -------- -------- --------- soft hearted From Horses Transportation Horses Fear From Shields Weapons Chariots Hurried From horns Communications Nation Shattered Troop crys Troop morale More than you RASHI NOT BEING PICKY ON WORDS ------------------------------ Again Rashi is NOT being picky on words. EXAMPLES (Of how Rashi was not being picky on words) ---------------------------------------------------- 1)SOFT HEARTED denotes any lack of steadfastness or inability to stand and stick to something(eg 2Ch13-07 "Rechavan was young and soft hearted (and couldn't stand up to Yaravam)" So there is no correspondence between SOFT HEARTED and CRY OF HORSES 2)The Hebrew word CHAFAZ means "HURRIED" as in Ex12-11 "Eat the passover HURRIEDLY" or 2S4-4 "They hurried to leave and ..he fell, laming him" Why then should HORN BLASTS be associated with a feeling of HURRIEDNESS (Anxiety) 3)The Hebrew word ARATZ seems to mean SHATTERED (physically or emotionally) as in Isa10-33 ("Twigging a tree with a TREE SHATTERER"). Why then should TROOP CRIES be associated with SHATTERED. 4) There is no CLIMACTIC DEVELOPMENT in this verse eg. Dt01-29 says "Dont be SHATTERED or AFRAID" vs Dt31-06 says "Dont be AFRAID or SHATTERED" So neither of these words (SHATTERED vs AFRAID) is worse than the other. (This corresponds to the principle that MORE important items are ALWAYS listed first while EQUAL items are sometimes listed in either order (see http://www.rashiYomi.com/nu27-01b.htm) RASHI USES RABBI ISHMAEL RULES OF STYLE --------------------------------------- Dt20-01:04 has a GENERAL-DETAIL-GENERAL style as follows GENERAL: When you go to war dont be afraid GOD IS WITH YOU DETAILS: Dont be SOFT, AFRAID, HURRIED, SHATTERED GENERAL: For GOD IS WALKING WITH YOU In accordance with the Rabbi Ishmael Rules of style we are required to interpret this sequence of verses by GENERALIZING the details. That is we **should** include all items of fear. Thus the essential driving force of Rashi is Rabbi Ishmaels requirement of generalization. We now understand why Rashi listed the 4 components of war: TRANSPORT, WEAPONS, COMMUNICATION, TROOPS. Rashi was saying don't be afraid of ANYTHING. Rashi is further supported by the rather good correspondence between Dt20-01 and these 4 concepts (HORSE-CHARIOT-NATION-MANY) corresonds well (but not perfectly) to (TRANSPORTATION(horse)- WEAPONS(Chariot)-COMMUNICATION(?nation)-TROOPS(Many)) RULE USED: CLIMAX #*#*#*#*#*#*#*#*#*# (C) Dr Hendel, 2000 *#*#*#*#*#*#*#*#*#*#*#*#* VERSE: Dt17-20b RASHIS COVERED: Dt17-20b Ex16-20b Ex20-12a Dt22-07a Dt12-25b Dt24-19d Dt11-21a RULE: ---- The Torah, in 7 commandments, explicitly states that we should do commandments "IN ORDER THAT IT BE GOOD WITH YOU AND YOU WILL GET GOOD QUALITY OF LIFE". These 7 commandments span the spectrum of all commandments Hence we infer that doing ANY commandment leads to getting GOOD and HAVING GOOD QUALITY OF LIFE. EXAMPLES: -------- {LIST} {The 7 commandments where it says "Do this commandment IN ORDER to live long and be well"} LANGUAGE What is special COMMANDMENT VERSE OF REWARD about this Mtzvah ----------------------- -------- --------- ------------------- Learn the Torah Dt11-21a MANY DAYS It is only mental*1 Leave forgotten sheaves Dt24-19d BLESS No intention to do*2 Dont eat blood Dt12-25b GOOD Blood is loathesome Let mother bird go Dt22-07a GOOD-LONG Easy to perform*2 Honor parents Ex20-12a LONG DAYS Expect reward anyway Have good justice Ex16-20b LIVE Communal*3 Learn Torah King Dt17-20b LONG REIGN Communal*3 NOTES ----- *1 Here is the logic: The Torah says you get reward EVEN in these 7 commandments So...we CONCLUDE that if you do ANY commandment you get reward since this is true EVEN for commandments -that are only mental (like learning) -that are not intended (like leaving forgotten items) -that would be difficult to violate (eg eating blood) -that are easy to perform (like letter mother bird go) -that you do for altruistic reasons (like honoring your parents since you expect them to reciprocate) The technical rule used here is the Rabbi Ishmael rule of Generalization from several sources (Since by examining the 7 verses we see that all commandments are like them) *2 The actual Rashis are as follows Dt24-19d You never intended to forget sheaves and you are blessed. How much more so if you intend to do a commandment Dt12-25b If not eating Blood which is loathesome gives reward how much more so doing other commandments Dt22-07a If a simple act like letting a mother bird go gives reward how much more so if you do a strenuous act Ex16-20b It is sufficient to have a good judicial system in order to get life and inheritance In the other 3 Rashis, Rashi says "If you do the commandment you get long life while if you don't do the commandment you get short life--because you may infer converses from implications in Biblical style" We have generalized Rashis approach which emphasizes that EVEN in these commandments you get reward. eg EVEN if you abstain from eating blood you get long life So too we interpret HONORING ONES FATHER & GET REWARD as EVEN IF YOU HONOR YOUR PARENTS (which normally you do for altruistic reasons since they help you get started in life) nevertheless you will still get rewarded by God. As for Rashis statement that "If you DO The commandments you get rewarded; if you DO NOT do the commandments you do NOT get rewarded"---This is part of the Rabbi Ishmael rule of Generalization. For the phrase IN ORDER THAT YOU LIVE LONG AND IT BE WELL WITH YOU only occurs as a reward FOR COMMANDMENTS. Hence we infer that if you do not do the commandments you will not get rewarded (since the generalization would not extend to non-commandments!) *3 The other 5 Rashis deal with commandments that EACH individual has to do. These 2 Rashis deal with COMMUNAL commandments like appointing Judges or the obligations of Kings to learn and be humble. Again the emphasis is that the Torah spanned the whole spectrum of commandments. RULE USED: DOUBLE PARSHAS #*#*#*#*#*#*#*#*#*# (C) Dr Hendel, 2000 *#*#*#*#*#*#*#*#*#*#*#*#* VERSE: v9-8-30a From: "Gavin Herman"To: Date: Wed, 30 Aug 2000 11:02:54 -0400 Subject: Rashi-is-Simple Russell My name is Marc Herman and I subscribe to your list. I am looking for a relatively inexpensive set of Tana"ch with Rashi. I would like a good translation, and if Targumim are included, it would be nice if they were translated as well, though not essential. I cannot decide whether or not to get a linear Rashi or not, and if you have any suggestions that would be great. Thank you very much. L'Shalom, Marc Herman ggherman@sprynet.com marcherman@minspring.com ---------------------------------------------------------------- ANSWER: 1) 1st if any readers want to give further advice or relate their own experiences feel free to write in---remember this is an email list. 2) There are many "good" English translations out there. Some examples that come to mind are Rabbi Sharfmans Linear translation and the Silberstein translation. 3) Personally I would call up 800-Eichler or 800-Judaism or go into your favorite book store. Simply tell them you want a few cheap Chumash_Rashi_And_English_translations. If you want to test if this Chumash is "right" for you then browse Ex21 and Dt32...if you understand what you read you are probably getting what you want. 4) Many people have **highly** praised the Sharfman linear translation. It is not that expensive and it is good for learning Rashis style and meaning. (In passing Rabbi Sharfman was the Rabbi of my shule when I was a child and was known (and still is known) for his clear shiurim.) 5) If you are adventuresome you might try some CD Roms. For example Davka (http://www.Davka.COm/) does have some CD Roms with eg Chumash, Rashi in both English and Hebrew. I think they run about $100 but you can browse prices on the web and/or call their 800 number. The nice thing about CD ROMS is you can do searches and sorts. But not everyone is cut out for "reading on the screen" and the price may be too high. 6) The Silberstein Chumash is known for "its notes". Each translation is slightly different. Again you wont be doing poorly (both price wise and learning wise) if you buy the Sharfman chumash. Hope the above was of some help..and I hope some readers write in about their experiences Russell Hendel; Moderator Rashi is Simple http://www.RashiYomi.Com surfing the Talmudic Sea #*#*#*#*#*#*#*#*#*# (C) Dr Hendel, 2000 *#*#*#*#*#*#*#*#*#*#*#*#* THE 2 DOZEN RASHI-IS-SIMPLE RASHI RULES http://www.RashiYomi.Com/rules.htm ======================================= I: RASHI gives MEANING ====================== A: NEW MEANINGS--(eg)"on the face of"=during the lifetime Volume 2 Number 9, http://www.rashiyomi.Com/Nu04-04a.htm B: SPECIAL WORDS--(eg)ACH=USUALLY;USUALLY observe shabbath!
