GOALS ===== This module studies the meaning of the word HOLY (KDSH) The basic meaning of KDSH is that it refers to a FORMAL ATMOSPHERE such as the one at BANQUETS or INAUGORATIONS. TODAYS UNIT =========== Today is the last unit in this module. We examine today some difficult verses where HOLY seems to mean SEPARATE. We show it really refers to SEPARATION FROM ANIMALITY and CREATION OF A BANQUET ATMOSPHERE. REFERENCE: ========= Todays unit comes from the following postings http://www.Rashiyomi.com/dt22-09b.htm http://www.Rashiyomi.Com/h11n13.htm |

BACKGROUND ---------- The Hebrew root K-D-Sh is enigmatic. It is usually translated as HOLY. But this translation, while true, is inadequate. THE TEXT -------- To show the enigma consider the following 4 uses of HOLY -------------------------------------------------------- - SANCTIFY the Sabbath; - be a HOLY nation - there will be no PROSTITUTES among you - dont sow mixed seeds lest the land be PROHIBITED -------------------------------------------------------- THE RASHI --------- What is the common denominator to the CAPPED words. I think the best way to explain Rashi is to translate ------------------------------------------------------- HOLY means any PREPARED,FORMAL AFFAIR ------------------------------------------------------- Hence HOLYNESS can refer to a FORMAL atmosphere such as we find at a BANQUET. Or, it can refer to a sexual affair. The word AFFAIR simply connotes something with several courses that is not on the fly--it can refer to food or sex. THE LIST -------- KDSH is also translated as SEPARATION. But it does not refer to any separation -- e.g. if you separated spoons and forks you would not use the word KDSH. Rather it refers to SEPARATION from GROSS PHYSICALITY. It is the type of UPPER CLASS BEHAVIOR we expect at formal affairs where we ABSTAIN from the lower physicality. In todays list KDSH refers to separation from FORBIDDEN FOODS, IDOLS and SEX | ||
VERSE | TEXT OF VERSE | KDSH means |
Dt14-02 | Abstention from forbidden foods | Food-Separate*8 |
Lv20-07a | Abstention from Idols | Idols-Separate*8 |
Dt22-09b | Abstain from fields of Mixed sown seeds | Sex-Separate*8 |

*8 The Rashis and verses in the following list correspond to a translation of K-D-Sh as SEPARATED FROM. As indicated above KADESH refers to SEPARATION from ANIMALITY This list show SEPARATION from -- Forbidden foods (Also a separation from animality) -- Idolatry: (Idolatrous practices frequently were connected with orgiasm and animality) The SEPARATION mentioned in Dt22-09b is difficult to fit in. Please see the main posting for complete details. We suggest there that Dt22-09b requires a --------------------------------------------------- SEPARATION OF PLANTS TO SYMBOLICALLY MIMIC THE SEPARTION OF SEXUALLY FORBIDDEN RELATIONS --------------------------------------------------- This idea is not new to us but advocated by several commentators. Thus the separation of plants mentioned in Dt22-09b symbolically indicates the banquet type atmosphere we have associated with HOLINESS and separation from gross animality. |
