This module studies the meaning of the word HOLY (KDSH)
The fundamental meaning of KDSH-HOLY is a FORMAL ATMOSPHERE
such as the one at BANQUETS or INAUGORATIONS.

KADESH means FORMAL

BACKGROUND
----------
The Hebrew root K-D-Sh is enigmatic. It is usually translated
as HOLY. But this translation, while true, is inadequate.

THE TEXT
--------
To show the enigma consider the following 4 uses of HOLY-KDSH
-------------------------------------------------------------
- SANCTIFY (KDSH) the Sabbath;
- be a HOLY (KDSH) nation
- there will be no PROSTITUTES (KDSH) among you
- dont sow mixed seeds lest the land be PROHIBITED (KDSH)
-------------------------------------------------------------

THE RASHI
---------
What is the common denominator to the CAPPED words.
I think the best way to explain Rashi is to translate:
-------------------------------------------------------
HOLY refers to a PREPARED,FORMAL AFFAIR
-------------------------------------------------------
Hence HOLYNESS can also refer to a FORMAL atmosphere
such as we find at a BANQUET.

THE LIST
--------
KDSH-HOLY has 5 distinct meanings. Rashi in Chumash focuses
on 3 or 4 of them. Each of these 3 meanings will have a separate
list below. The 5 meanings are
---------------------------------------------------------------
-- HOLIDAY HOLINESS - formal holiday banquets
-- THE TEMPLE ------- A place with a FORMAL atmosphere
-- HOLY PERSON - a formal person-separated from animality
-- PROSTITUTE -- upper class prostitutes with a FORMAL approach
-- PROCLAIMING a formal day *1
---------------------------------------------------------------

The list below contains verses speaking about HOLIDAY HOLINESS
According to Rashi this HOLINESS expresses itself in FORMAL
HOLIDAY BANQUETS.
VERSEText of Verse with word HOLY/SANCTIFIEDKDSH=AFFAIR
Gn02-03a& God blessed & Sanctified the ShabbathManna BANQUET*2
Ex20-11b..God blessed & Sanctified the SabbathManna BANQUET*2
Ex12-16aPassover is a HOLY DAYBANQUET day*1*2
Lv23-35aYom Kippur is a HOLY DAYBANQUET day*1*2
Nu11-18aPREPARE for food tomorrowGods BANQUET*3
COMMENTS

*1 To get the flavor and variety of this meaning of PROCLOMATION
   consider the following verse examples
   -------------------------------------------------------------
1Sam07-01 FORMALLY proclaim Elazar to watch Gods ark
2Kin10-20 FORMALLY proclaim a holiday for the BAAL idol
Jer06-04 FORMALLY proclaim war on Jerusalem
Jer51-27 FORMALLY proclaim on her (war), Nations
Joel2-15 FORMALLY proclaim a fast day
Joel2-16 Gather the nation, FORMALLY invite the multitude
Joel4-9 Announce in the nations,FORMALLY proclaim war
   -------------------------------------------------------------

I would also include Dt22-09b in this list.
This is a difficult verse. It is more fully discussed in the
main URL. It is best translated as
   ------------------------------------------------------------
Dont sow your vineyards with mixed seeds; because if you
do then the resulting produce will be FORMALLY PROCLAIMED
(that is, the law MAKES AN EXAMPLE out of these seeds--
everyone knows about them and they become prohibited)
   ------------------------------------------------------------

*2 There are several similar Rashis. Rashi suggests that the
Jewish Holy days are SANCTIFIED with
  -- Special Speeches/Prayers
  -- Appropriate Appareil (Black tie!)
  -- Food and Drink
In other words K-D-Sh, to SANCTIFY a holiday, means to have
  a FORMAL BANQUET

*3 The context in Nu11 is that the Jews had asked for DESCENT
food other than the Manna. Moses therefore tells them to
PREPARE (KDASH) FOR A BANQUET. Moses says this cynically:
THe Banquet will lead to overeating and sickness(Which
  is typical of some banquets)
HOLY MEANS SEPARATION FROM ANIMALITY

HOLYNESS (KDSH) is traditionally translated as
--------------------------------------------
SEPARATION from sexual immorality (Lv19-02b)
--------------------------------------------

But a closer examination shows that KDSH refers to any
separation from animality. Some examples given below are
- separation from sexual immorality
- separation from wine by the nazarite
- separation from forbidden foods
- separation from idolatry
Hence we must widen the literal application of the above Rashi

Note that the translation,SEPARATION,is inadequate since eg
you would not say that you SEPARATED (KDSH) say, spoons from
forks. Therefore we have to translate KDSH as SEPARATION
FROM ANIMALITY. Here is the list of examples.
VERSECONTENT OF VERSESEPARATE FROM
Lv18-02Separation from forbidden sexSexualy SEPARATE
Lv20-26Punishments for forbidden sexSexualy SEPARATE
Lv21-07Priestly separation from forbidden sexSexualy SEPARATE
Dt23-11Covering up of nocturnal emissionsSexualy SEPARATE
Ex19-06Separation from WomenSex-Separate
Nu06-05Abstention from WINE by NazariteFood-Separate
Dt14-02Abstention from forbidden foodsFood-Separate
Dt14-02Abstention from forbidden foodsFood-Separate
Lv20-07aAbstention from IdolsIdols-Separate
Lv19-02bBe a HOLY peopleAnimality*4
COMMENTS

*4 Lv19-02 simply says GENERALLY: BE HOLY. Rashi interprets this
as SEPARATION FROM SEXUAL IMMORALITY. As shown in this list
we have to broaden the Rashi to mean SEPARATION FROM ANY
TYPE OF ANIMALITY. Furthermore to make this consistent
with the other meanings of holiness we would emphasize
the idea of CREATING A FORMAL ATMOSPHERE.
KDSH means UPPER CLASS PROSTITUTE

KDSH can mean prostitute. The Hebrew word ZONAH also means
prostitute and seems to refer to teen prostitution(eg Lv19-29)
KDSHAH would refer to an UPPER CLASS prostitute, the type
that provides a FORMAL BANQUET ATMOSPHERE
VERSEMEANING OF KADESH
Dt18-23aFemale Prostitute*6
Dt18-23bMale prostitute*6
Gn38-21aFemale Prostitute*6
COMMENTS

*6 Note the English pun of SEXUAL AFFAIR (The word AFFAIR in
English can also refer to a food BANQUET or sexual AFFAIR
The emphasis in both cases is something that is not on
   the fly)
