CHAPTER 4,5
===========
RESPONSES TO QUESTIONS FROM YESTERDAY
-------------------------------------
I began the translation with Chapter 3
since Chapters 1 and 2 simply indicate
all the tribulations and sufferings that
befell Job. But the discussion about the reason
for suffering begins in Chapter 3. I in fact
briefly summarized Chapters 1 and 2 in a
footnote in the 1st posting.
I should also mention the BULLETED approach
I use for translation. Here are 2 points about
the FORMAT in which we translate.
Here is a translation from todays chapters
-----------------------------------------
- From 6 trials God will save you
- From the 7th, there will be no suffering
- - in a FAMINE, God will redeem you from death
- - in a WAR, ------------------- from swords
- - in a SLANDER campaign you will be hidden
- - you will not fear from TERRORISM that comes
- - you will laugh to terror and MUGGINGS
- - you will not fear from WILD MEN
- And you will know your house is peaceful
-------------------------------------------
This passage will be explained in context below.
For the moment notice how the first stanza
states that God will save you from 6 trials.
And THEN you have a list of 6 sufferings
(FAMINE, WAR,SLANDER, TERRORISM, MUGGINGS,
WILD-MEN) from which God saves people.
What we have contributed is the use of a
bulleted indented format to explicitly
show the relationship between the topic
sentence-- GOD WILL SAVE YOU FROM 6 SUFFERINGS
and the 6 particular examples: FAMINE, WAR etc
The other format we contributed is the use of
dashed lines, ------, to indicate ellipsis.
Here is an example from Todays chapter
------------------------------------------------
- - in a famine, God will redeem you from death
- - in a war, ------------------- from swords
------------------------------------------------
In the above verse notice how the first stanza
explicitly states that GOD WILL REDEEEM YOU
FROM DEATH. The 2nd stanza should similarly
state, GOD WILL REDEEM YOU FROM SWORDS. But
instead, the phrase GOD WILL REDEEM YOU is
absent in the 2nd stanza; it only states
FROM SWORDS. In other words the verse should
read
------------------------------------------------
- - in a famine, God will redeem you from death
- - in a war, God will redeem you from swords
------------------------------------------------
but instead the verse actually read
------------------------------------------------
- - in a famine, God will redeem you from death
- - in a war, ------------------- from swords
------------------------------------------------
What we have contributed is the use of the
aligned dashed line format to indicate that
the phrase GOD WILL REDEEM YOU should be
repeated. Such absent phrases are common in
the Bible and help knit sentences together.
This completes answers to questions
about previous postings. Now let us
continue with todays chapters
Today we translate chapters 4,5 which
according to the outline contains
- ROUND 1
- DIALOG 1
- The 1st attempted solution to evil
by Aliphaz
We apply our 3 fold
approach(TOPIC,SUBTOPICS, WORDS)
to Chapters 4-5.
The ONE SENTENCE summary of this chapter is
Eliphaz's statement that
----------------------------------
Suffering comes to teach & improve
----------------------------------
This chapter naturally has
6 subtopics as follows:
---------------------------------------------------
MAIN SENTENCE: Suffering comes to teach and improve
---------------------------------------------------
Jb04-02:05 Job, you are impossible to talk to
Jb04-06:16 Reverence-Hope-simplicity strengthens us
Jb04-17:01 Who are you to question God?
Jb05-02:05 You are a thickheaded cursed fool
Jb05-06:16 Instead pray to God to change status
Jb05-17:27 Suffering redeems/elevates man
---------------------------------------------------
On a technical point, the reader can of
course recognize chapter subsections by content.
However the reader can also recognize chapter
subsections by KEYWORDS which introduce these
subsections. The sections of this chapter begin
with the Hebrew Keywords, HA and KI.
---------------- 1st SECTION ----------------------
MAIN SENTENCE: Suffering comes to teach and improve
---------------------------------------------------
Jb04-02:05 You are impossible to talk to
---------------------------------------------------
If we try to talk to you, you will wear out
but we cant withold our words.
Look: You rebuked many people
----- you strengthened weak people
----- your words have uplifted stumblers
----- you have strengthened subservient people
----- But now when it happens to you,you wear out
----- -------- when it happens to you,you frighten
----------------------------------------------------
---------------- 2nd SECTION ----------------------
MAIN SENTENCE: Suffering comes to teach and improve
---------------------------------------------------
Jb04-06:16 Reverence-Hope-simplicity strengthens us
---------------------------------------------------
Your reverence of God will lead to your strength
------------------------------- to your hope
------------------------------- to your innocence
For example if I see ploughers of evil
----------- -------- planters of suffering
----------- -------- those who harvest(money)
----------- Then God will put these people in Hell
----------- ---- Gods anger will destroy them
----------- ---- like a lion lost without food
----------- ---- like lion cubs with pulled teeth
But I stole this thought(that reverence saves)
I understood a drop of it
Like dream streams during vision filled sleep
------------------ when deep sleep falls
------------------ ---- Fear called me and fright
------------------ ---- Most bones were frightened
------------------ ---- A Spirit gripped me
This thought(reverence saves) stood up
but I did not recognize it
A picture before my eyes
but it was barely audible
---------------------------------------------------
---------------- 3rd SECTION ----------------------
MAIN SENTENCE: Suffering comes to teach and improve
---------------------------------------------------
Jb04-17:01 Who are you to question God?
---------------------------------------------------
Is man more righteous than God?
Is man more pure that his Creator?
God doesnt even trust his servants
and He makes fun of angels
How much more so, to dwellers of flesh
whose root is physicality
who get crushed before the slightest annoyance?
In a day they(dwellers of flesh) can deterioriate
without a fight they can permanantly be lost
Their remnants get blown away
They die stupidly
Call (to heaven)--does anyone answer you?
Do you have holy contacts to ask?
---------------------------------------------------
---------------- 4th SECTION ----------------------
MAIN SENTENCE: Suffering comes to teach and improve
---------------------------------------------------
Jb05-02:05 You are a thickheaded cursed fool
---------------------------------------------------
You are a thick-headed person consumed by anger
a gullible person dying of envy
I see you (as you are)
a well-to-do but thick-headed person
whose lot was suddenly cursed
your children were far from salvation
------------- crushed in public
------------- without someone saving them
Your harvests will be eaten by those you starved
------------- your workers-in-thorns will take them
------------- the thirsty will gulp your wealth
----------------------------------------------------
---------------- 5th SECTION ----------------------
MAIN SENTENCE: Suffering comes to teach and improve
---------------------------------------------------
Jb05-06:16 Instead pray to God who changes status
---------------------------------------------------
For suffering is not made for the inanimate
--- tribulation is not made for the inanimate
Rather man grows up from tribulations
the same way flames go up(& not down)
But if I were you, I would seek the Almighty
----------------- I would speak to God
Who makes unfathomonable depth
--------- uncountable wonders
----gives rain to dryness
----sends water to cast-outs
----places the low, on high
---------- people in darkness, to salvation
----anulls the plans of subtle people
----stops them from achieving success
----catchs the wise in their machinations
----superficializes the advice to thick-headed
----------------------------------------------
---------------- 6th SECTION ----------------------
MAIN SENTENCE: Suffering comes to teach and improve
---------------------------------------------------
Jb05-17:27 Suffering redeems/elevates man
---------------------------------------------------
Behold: Prosperous is the person God rebukes
Therefore, dont despise sufferings from God
- From 6 trials God will save you
- From the 7th, there will be no suffering
- - in a famine, God will redeem you from death
- - in a war, ------------------- from swords
- - in a slander campaign you will be hidden
- - you will not fear from terrorism that comes
- - you will laugh to terror and muggings
- - you will not fear from wild men
- And you will know your house is peaceful
- you will review your family without faults
- you will be confident of a large family
- your progeny will be like a meadow
- You will be buried at the completion of a rich life
- ------------------ like a timely grown plant
Behold we examined this: and it is indeed so
Harken to it and
understand it
---------------------------------------------------
Stay tune for tomorrows exciting rebuttal by Job
to this, Eliphaz's first attempt to solve the
problem of evil.
NOTE: I have frequently use anthropomorophisms to
enrich the meaning of the text. For example the
actual text states:
--------------------------------
TRIBULTATION IS NOT MADE FOR dust;
MAN IS BORN FOR TRIBULATION.
--------------------------------
I have changed this to
------------------------------------------
TRIBULATION IS NOT MADE FOR THE inanimate
rather MAN grows FROM TRIBULATION
------------------------------------------
I believe these subtle changes greatly enrich
meaning.
