This root is normally translated as TO KNOW. But its real meaning is BE FAMILIAR or APPRECIATE. For example Gn04-01 would be translated 'AND ADAM WAS FAMILIAR WITH HIS WIFE' denoting marital intimacy. Those who wish to review all examples should consult one of the following URLs http://www.RashiYomi.Com/ex18-11a.htm http://www.RashiYomi.Com/h5n3.htm #*#*#*#*#*#*#*#*#*# (C) Dr Hendel, 2000 *#*#*#*#*#*#*#*#*#*#*#*#* EXAMPLES: In the following verses YUD-DALET-AYIN clearly does not just mean TO KNOW. It rather means to APPRECIATE. The point of the verse is not that NEW INFORMATION was discovered but rather that KNOWN FACTS were finally APPRECIATED. An alternate (perhaps better) translation is RECOGNIZE. Try both RECOGNIZE and APPRECIATE in the following sentences and see which you like better. For the philosophically minded try to articulate the difference between APPRECIATE & RECOGNIZE vs TO KNOW. (Suggested answer on bottom) (4)Gn22-12c Now I APPRECIATE that you are God fearing (5)Ex16-06b & you will APPRECIATE that God took you out of Egypt (6)Ex02-25a God heard their screams and God RECOGNIZE them (7)Ex03-07a for I RECOGNIZE their suffering --------------------------------------------------------------- ANSWER: To KNOW is purely intellectual. RECOGNIZE and APPRECIATE have an emotional element. Thus eg the "recognition of the state of Israel" does not mean that people "knew" about it; it rather means that people were going to OFFICIALLY act as if it existed. #*#*#*#*#*#*#*#*#*# (C) Dr Hendel, 2000 *#*#*#*#*#*#*#*#*#*#*#*#*
