overindulged in something you like--ie your desires
have ENDED)

Kuph-Tzade has 9 Meanings

EXAMPLE 4: Lv20-23a The Canaanites sinned;I-m DISGUSTED with them
EXAMPLE 5: Nu22-03b Moab was DISGUSTED with the Jews.

BACKGROUND
----------
One of the 6 major functions of Rashi is to provide a Biblical
dictionary -- that is, to list words and all their meanings.

In this module we discuss the root Kuf-Tzade whose fundamental
meaning is END. In todays unit we discuss the meaning DISGUSTING
--literally MY DESIRES HAVE COME TO AND END--I HAVE HAD ENOUGH.

TEXT - Lv20-23a
---------------
The Canaanites have sinned immorally till I, God, became
disgusted with them. *2

RASHI
-----
Rashi and Radack identify DISGUSTED as 1 of
the 9 meanings of KUPH-TZADE*10

THE LIST
---------
In the LIST below we present verses where Kuph-Tzade means
DISGUSTED. Other meanings will be discussed in future issues

Here is the LIST. Footnote *1 documents the etymologies in Rashi
VERSE TEXT OF VERSE WITH Kuph-Tzade TRANSLATED as DISGUSTED
Lv20-23a The Canaanites sinned;I-m DISGUSTED with them *1
Nu22-03b Moab was DISGUSTED with the Jews. *1
COMMENTS
*1 There are 3 Rashis presenting 2 etymologies on this word:

On Lv20-23a Rashi EXPLICITLY identifies nuances of disgusted:
   -----------------------------------------------------------
Like a person who overate & said I HAVE HAD ENOUGH
   -----------------------------------------------------------
   In other words,Rashi says KTzH(Disgusted)comes from KayTz(End)
It refers to a DISGUST that comes from eg overeating--
having too much of one thing--so the desire for the food
or thing comes to an END(KAYTZ) *2

On Ex01-12c: Rashi says KTzH(Disgusted) comes from KoTz(Thorn)
cf The explicit usage Nu33-55: A THORN IN MY SIDE*11
So disgusting means BEING A THORN IN MY SIDE

Finally Nu21-05c uses the FULL Hebrew form: KTzH NEFESH
   This literally means
   ----------------------------------------------
MY DESIRES (NEFESH) HAVE COME TO AN END(KAYTZ)
   ----------------------------------------------
This is consistent with the nuance of OVEREATING.

In summary there are two etymologies to KaTzaH=DISGUSTING
both coming from the fundamental meaning KAYTZ=END
   - DISGUSTING = END(KAYTZ)of my DESIRES (NEFESH)
This is the type of disgust that comes eg from overeating

   - DISGUSTING = BEING A THORN (KAYTZ) in my side
The word THORN in turn comes from the KAYTZ(to cut/end)
since thorns make a cut and END to something.

*2 As indicated in the footnotes (*1) DISGUST-KAYTZ in Hebrew
has a connotation of DISGUST FROM OVEREATING. In this case
God had mercy and let the Canaanites do what they wanted.
God had OVERINDULGED THEM and they kept on sinning. Now
God was DISGUSTED...HE HAD HAD ENOUGH
