VERSE: Lv08-03a

======================= Lv08-03a ================================

SUCCINCT SUMMARY
----------------
Rashi will frequentlly make a comment by making broad
database inquiries. A database inquiry is simply a question
addressed to a large databank---typically a large collection
of verses. Thus DATABASE methods typically span many diverse
verses.

EXAMPLE Lv08-03a
----------------
Today we ask the query
----------------------------------
Where does a verse seem to indicate
that a small space/amount accomodated
a large amount of items or people
----------------------------------

Obviously such a query is so to speak
'just for fun.' Rashi lists one of them
A rather more complete list comes from
the Midrash Leviticus Rabbah.

The following are good examples
-------------------------------------------------------
VERSE SMALL SPACE HELD LARGE ...
---------- --------------- ----------------------------
Lv08-03 Temple door nation
Ex09-08:09 Handful of soot Spread over Egypt
Ex18-13 Moses tent Whole nation asks questions
Nu20-08:10 The rock Whole nation congregates to Rock
Jr03-17 Jerusalem Whole world will gather there
------------------------------------------------------

Of course the Midrash is 'just for fun' and many
of these verses have obvious explanations. For example
Ex18-13 doesn't mean that all 600,000 Jews came to Moses
tent every day; rather it means that Jews from all walks
of life barged into the tent at all times.

Similarly Jr03-17 doesn't mean that the whole world
will assemble over Jerusalem at one point of time--
rather it means that Jerusalem will be the focal
point--the metropolis--of the world.

LIST606n below summarizes this argument
