================ KTz means TO COMPLETE & END ====================

BACKGROUND
----------
One of the 6 major functions of Rashi is to provide a Biblical
dictionary -- that is, to list words and all their meanings.

REFERENCE

CONTINUATION
------------
This module continues the unit started last issue. See

THE ROOT
--------
We study the following 4 roots
-- Kuph-Tzade-Tzade
-- Kuph-Tzade-Hey
-- Kuph-Yud-Tzade
-- Yud-Kuph-Tzade
According to Radack these 4 roots have the same meaning

THE RASHI
---------
Although there are about 1-2 dozen Rashis on KaYTz, the
fundamental Rashis occur at
- Gn41-01a Kuph-Tzade always means END and COMPLETION
- Lv20-33a When Kuph-Tzade means DISGUST it has a connotation
of disgust like overeating--of having Enough of something

THE LIST
--------
We have presented the 6 Rashis on Kuph-Tzade meaning DISGUST
last time. In this posting we present two lists. In this 1st
list we LIST the 10 meanings of Kuph-Tzade and show how these
10 meanings illustrate two concepts
-- CUTTING, MAKING AN END
-- COMPLETION, HAVING ENOUGH OF SOMETHING

In the 2nd list we simply list the meanings, verses where this
meaning occurs, the text of the verses as well as the relation
of the particular meaning to the fundamental primary meaning
=================================================================
PRIMARY MEANING KTz MEANS Relation of MEANING to PRIMARY
================ =========== ====================================
End, Completion ----------- ------------------------------------
--------------- Disgusted Had enough of(It must end) *1
--------------- Awake Enough rest (End of rest) *2
--------------- Summer Ripening/completion of fruit*3
--------------- Dry figs Complete Ripening process*4
--------------- Whole thing from END to END*5
To cut;make end ----------- ------------------------------------
--------------- thorns cut Thorns cut*6
--------------- borders end of object*7
--------------- corners end of object*8
--------------- hair locks On Corners of hair*9
--------------- Leaders*10 Ends/Heads/Borders of society
--------------- Whole thing from END to END*5

NOTES
-----
*1 Gn41-01a At the COMPLETION of 2 years

*2 cf 2Kn4-31 Gn28-16 (YKTz and KYTz have same meaning)

*3 Gn08-22d (Rashi identifies Summer as the FIG SEASON
and thus connects SUMMER(KaYiTz) with FIGS(KaYiTz)
But I see no reason not to simply identify SUMMER in
general with the RIPENING season Figs are one example

*4 2Sam16-2 (Rashi seems to emphasize this meaning while
Radack does not in his book Roots--at any rate both
Rashi and Radack agree on the general classes of meaning)

*5 The Hebrew-English IDIOM (END TO END) has nuances of both
-- COMPLETION (END TO END means the WHOLE OBJECT)
-- BORDERS (From ONE END to the other END)
Thus this idiom unifies both nuances of KaYTz

*6 cf Ex22-05b and Gn03-18a

*7 eg Ex16-35c

*8 eg Ex28-23b (The strings were attached to the corners
   of the choshen)

*9 cf Song05-02 His Locks of hair are braided

*10 Rashi actually cites two opinions on Nu11-01e
-- END OF SOCIETY could mean the LEADERS
-- END OF SOCIETY could mean the RIF RAFS
However it is more consistent with the other entries in
this list to interpret END OF SOCIETY as LEADERS (A similar
dual interpretation applies to Gn19-04b). Thus in this case
we have decided on a preferred meaning by examining other
    meaning of the same roots
=================================================================

=============== Kuph-Tzade means END/COMPLETION =================

We continue here the previous list. In this list we exhibit
 - the MEANINGS of Kuph-Tzade
 - the RELATION of each meaning to the 2 primary meanings of
   END & COMPLETION
 - a VERSE which contains this meaning
 - the SAMPLE text of this verse

=================================================================
MEANING Relation to End Verse Sample Text
=========== ================ ========= ==========================
To cut Make an END Lv14-41d Spill the dust they CUT
Thorns They cut Ex22-05b ..fire burns THORNS
Thorns THey cut Gn03-18a ..thorns & thistles*1
COMPLETION The END*3 Gn41-01a At COMPLETION of 2 years
Fig Making Completion figs 2Sam16-2 Bread & figs for kids*3
Summer Fig Month Gn08-22d Summer & winter.... *2 *3
CORNERS END OF OBJECT Ex28-23b Attached to the corners
CORNERS END OF OBJECT Ex25-18d Make them on CORNERS
BORDER END OF OBJECT*11 Ex16-35c Until they came to border
LEADERS Social-order-end Nu11-01e ..God punished LEADERS*3
LEADERS Social-order-end Gn19-04b ..all leaders came*3*4
END TO END All parts*5 Gn47-21b from one end to the other

NOTES
-----

*1 Rashi smoothens the verses reading by INSERTING the CAPPED
   Missing phrase:
   ---------------------------------------------------
The earth will give you thorns and thistles
   WHEN YOU PLOUGH
   ---------------------------------------------------
We have elsewhere discussed this Rashi method of smoothing
   out readings by inserting clauses.

Rav Hirsch explains the choice of THORNS and THISTLES.
-- Thorns REPEL & CUT you (Repel)
-- Thistles STICK to YOU (Attract)
These are two extremes; both unwanted

*2 Of course summer is the COMPLETION of all Ripening

*3 In all meanings denoting END there is an element of
COMPLETION, or more precisely, an element that the part
before the end is usable and good. Thus SUMMER ends and
also COMPLETES the ripening process; SLEEP ends and also
COMPLETES the rest process. For further analysis see *10

*4 Rashis exact statement is that
   -------------------------------------------------
All Sedomites came for the rape WITHOUT ANY LEADER
ADMONISHING THEM (Because the city had no leaders)
   -------------------------------------------------
   So Rashi would translate Gn19-04b
   -----------------------------------------------------
All Sedomite staff of the LEADERS came (because no
   one admonished them)
   -----------------------------------------------------

*5 An idiom

---------------------- LONGER FOOTNOTES -------------------------

*10 -- DISGUST is like the DISGUST of overeating; in other words
you liked the food but you have HAD ENOUGH (END of eating
but with a connotation of LIKING the initial segment)

-- SUMMER ends and COMPLETES the RIPENING process

-- AWAKENING ends and COMPLETES the rest obtained by sleep

-- CUT is distinct from PULVERIZE; you dont destroy the
object but preserve part of it and give a new border
Thus CUT gives a COMPLETION to the INWARDS of an object

-- On Nu11-01e Rashi cites two opinions about the meaning of
ENDS OF CITY: The city social order has 2 ends: So
it could mean the CITYS LEADERS--the ENDS/HEADS of
society; or, it could mean the RIF-RAFS the social
ends and leftovers of society. HOwever it would
be consistent with this list to interpret ENDS OF
SOCIETY to refer to the LEADERS (A similar opinion
       can be made on Gn19-04b)

-- Gn47-21b FROM END TO END is an idiom denoting the
WHOLE, ALL PARTS in the MIDDLE from end to end

*11 Rashi notes a contradiction in the verse
   - They ate the Manna until they came to INHABITED LAND
   - they ate the Manna until they came to its BORDERS
We have fully discussed the method of contradictory
   verses in http://www.RashiYomi.Com/ri-14.htm
Here we use the method of applying the two verses to two
times -- thus they RECEIVED the manna till they arrived
at the border and they ATE the manna till which they
received at the border till they came to civilized land
