SUCCINCT SUMMARY
----------------
Rashi frequently comments by making broad database queries
and noting patterns.
EXAMPLE-Lv16-04
-------------------------
We make a query of the clothing worn by Priests
We find that
- Priests sometimes wore 4 apparel:
PANTS, SHIRT, BELT, TURBAN
- Priests (High Priest) sometimes wore 8 apparel:
PANTS,SHIRT,BELT,TURBAN,
COAT,VEST,BREASTPLATE,TIARA
Mostly 4-apparel was worn by the
ORDINARY priests. However when a ceremony
emphasized humility the High priest would
wear the 4 apparel also.

- Pants
- Shirt

- BreastPlaste
- Suit Jacket
- Belt
- Turban
- Tiara
The 4 apparel of the Ordinary Priest are
- Pants
- Shirt
- Belt
- Turban
*2 Rashi deals with the anomaly that the Yom Kippur Sin
offering is
- offered by the High priest
- who however wears the 4 clothes of the ordinary priest
Rashi explains the Yom Kippur sin offering atones on
improper relations/entries to the Temple---Hence the
High priest should wear ORDINARY clothes to emphasize
that he is ORDINARY with no special privileges*10
--------------------- LONGER FOOTNOTES ------------------
*10 Rashis literal language is as follows
----------------------------------------
Aaron sinned with the GOLDEN calf
Hence it would be improper for him
to wear the 8 garments (which contain
GOLD) when seeking atonement on
commandments of holiness
----------------------------------------
We however think the proper approach
when reading a Rashi such as the above is to
-- seek broad deep meaning, rather than
-- seek superficial coincidences
In this case the underlying deep meaning is that
-- the sin offering atones on sins against
holiness/improper entry and hence the
atonement procedure should emphasize
humility (ORDINARY PRIEST CLOTHES) vs
HIGH PRIEST CLOTHES
-- the superficial coincidence is that
Aaron created a Gold calf which corresponded
to a sin of improper approach to God...hence
it would be improper for him to wear the Gold
garments when atoning for improper entry.
In summary: we believe that the coincidence
that Rashi cites should be seen as reflecting
a deeper more comprehensive theme (that is:
emphasize humility when atoning on sins of
arrogance--hence the ORDINARY PRIEST CLOTHES
vs the HIGH PRIESTS clothes).
