Rashi explains the meaning of words the same way the dictionary
explains meaning.  Rashi had 10 methods to explain meaning.
One of them is the UNIFIED MEANING method in which Rashi shows
how disparate meanings of one root have an underlying unified
meaning.

The Hebrew root PAY-TAUV-AYIN
has an underlying meaning of SUDDENLY

However Rashi was not deviating from the above UNIFIED
MEANING of the text. Rather Rashi was explaining
the LEGAL POINT of SUDDENLY WITHOUT HATRED as indicating
an UNFORSEEABLE ACCIDENT.
