13 Methods for inferring meaning:#15 of 32 DAILY RASHI RASHIYOMI June 13th 2001 Rashis 788-789 (c) RashiYomi Inc.,2001, Dr Hendel President Permission to Reprint with this header ARCHIVES: http://www.RashiYomi.Com/calendar.htm ===================================================== Hi everybody I am writing from Denver airport My normal template will resume tomorrow If you like this template let me know BACkGROUND =========== Recall we are giving examples of Rashis naming objects by their properties without explicitly saying what they are For example: AZURE (Techeleth) refers to a GARMENT that is AZURE(Sky blue). Thus the object is designated by its PROPERTY--sky blue/azure--but the object is not designated by what it is--A GARMENT-- EXAMPLE #38: Lv05-24a ===================== BACKGROUND ---------- The Bible is talking about Business Investments. In an investment I FIRST put down some investment amount and THEN, AFTERWARDS, receive INTEREST THE VERSE/RASHI: The word FIRST designates the PRINCIPLE --------------- or the investment amount. This is in contrast to the interest which comes 2nd or afterwards Thus this Rashi is another example of something designated by a PROPERTY--the principle is FIRST while the interest is SECOND--rather than by what it is -- an INVESTENT. EXAMPLE 39: Ex15-20c ==================== The hebrew root Tav-Pay refers to a POUNDING activity. For example, mourning people may pound themselves in regret. A noun form of this verb could refer to ANYTHING that involved in pounding---it could for example refer to a --hammer --murder (pound his head in ) --musical percussion instruments like drum, cymbals etc It so happens that the word TOF refers to DRUMS and CYMBALS --musical instruments that are POUNDED. Again we have here an example of a Rashi that designates an object--the DRUM--not by what it is-- a MUSICAL INSTRUMENT --but rather by the particular properties of this type of musical instrument--the DRUM is that instrumentthat you POUND ======================(C) RashiYomi Inc 2001=================
