This unit will focus on a major Rashi task--explaining the MEANINGS OF WORDS. Explaining the MEANINGS of WORDS is more than looking something up in a dictionary. There are METHODS to explaining WORDS. Thus in this module we will explore HOW Rashi determines the meanings of words -- that is, we will explore WHAT RASHIS METHODS ARE TODAYS UNIT ----------- Today we complete the subunit on OBJECTS named by their properties. Background is given below. REFERENCE: ---------- This module comes from the following reference in the Rashi-is-Simple series. Many further cross references are presented on that page. http://www.RashiYomi.Com/ex31-15a.htm #*#*#*# (C) RashiYomi Inc., 2001, Dr. Hendel, President #*#*#*#*# BACKGROUND ---------- Recall we are studying how Rashi analyzes the objects that are named by a PROPERTY vs by WHAT THEY ARE. Thus e.g. (*) BLUE is not anything blue but rather a THREAD died BLUE (Ex25-04a) (*) RED is not anything RED but rather a THREAD died RED (Ex25-04b) (*) SEDUCE doesnt refer to any type of seductive activity but rather refers to an attractive dress worn by women (Gn49-11d) Let us now look at more examples THE VERSE and RASHIS -------------------- EXAMPLE 45: Ex16-33a -------------------- RASHI: The Hebrew word TZINTZENET refers to a CONTAINER. COMMENT ------- Notice how this Rashi is unlike the other Rashis: For in the Rashis, we are e.g. told that SEDUCE is THAT type of garment by which women seduce their husbands. Thus Rashi tells us ---the GENERAL TYPE of object used, a GARMENT, ---what was SPECIFIC about this garment:it was ATTRACTIVE By contrast on Ex16-33a Rashi does tell us ---the GENERAL TYPE: TZINTZENET = a CONTAINER But Rashi does NOT tell us WHAT TYPE of container. My approach is that since Rashi told us the SPECIFICS in the other verses we are justified in seeking specifics in Ex16-33a also. But TziNaH, the root of TZINTZENETH means COLD. Further notice how TZINTZENETH uses a double root: Tzinah, Tzinah. Thus I would suggest that TZINTZENET means a CONTAINER THAT GIVES ONLY COLD FOOD (that is it is insultated from heat) This would correspond to the English concept of THERMOS, and indeed it would make sense that a thermos was used to preserve MANNA. Other examples of DOULBE ROOTS denoting INTENSITY are presented in the footnotes ------------------------ NOTES -------------------------------- * Here are other examples of DOULBE HEBREW ROOTS denoting intensity EXAMPLE 46: Lv13-49a ---------------------- The Hebrew word ADOM means RED. The Doubled Hebrew word ADAMDAM means CHERRY RED. EXAMPLE 47: Lv13-49b --------------------- The Hebrew word YRAK means GREEN. The Doubled Hebrew word YRAKRAK means PURE GREEN (Grass-blade green) It thus seems reasonable to interpret TZINTZENET as meaning INTENSE COLD (Heat preserving). #*#*#*# (C) RashiYomi Inc., 2001, Dr. Hendel, President #*#*#*#*#
