This unit will focus on a major Rashi task--explaining the MEANINGS OF WORDS. Explaining the MEANINGS of WORDS is more than looking something up in a dictionary. There are METHODS to explaining WORDS. Thus in this module we will explore HOW Rashi determines the meanings of words -- that is, we will explore WHAT RASHIS METHODS ARE TODAYS UNIT ----------- We are almost thru with this unit on meaning. I hope you have enjoyed it. In the last few days we will give examples of how words can be combined to make new phrases with a meaning transcending the meanings of the individual words! See below for examples. REFERENCE: ---------- This module comes from the following reference in the Rashi-is-Simple series. http://www.RashiYomi.Com/nu03-04a.htm #*#*#*# (C) RashiYomi Inc., 2001, Dr. Hendel, President #*#*#*#*# BACKGROUND ---------- We give examples below of phrases composed of several words EACH of whose meaning is known. But together these words form a new concept. EXAMPLE 73: Gn11-28a ==================== Gn11-28a "& Charan died ON THE FACE of his father" RASHI: "ON THE FACE OF" means DURING THE LIFETIME of his father EXAMPLE 74: Nu03-4a =================== Nu03-04 "& Elazar was made a Priest ON THE FACE of AARON" RASHI: "ON THE FACE OF" means DURING THE LIFETIME of AARON COMMENT: ======== In the above 2 examples the reader (in Hebrew or English) is familiar with the meanings of the INDIVIDUAL words -----ON -----THE FACE OF It is not at all obvious that when these words combine they should form a new concept -----ON THE FACE OF = DURING THE LIFETIME OF This NEW MEANING is derived from CONTEXT. Rashi in fact UNIFORMLY interprets this phrase the same IDENTICAL way almost every time it occurs (by a person). Tomorrow we will see 2 more examples. #*#*#*# (C) RashiYomi Inc., 2001, Dr. Hendel, President #*#*#*#*#
