OVERVIEW: ======== This new module deals with Rashis which explain verses where a sentence part is MISSING. There are 4 cases to >MISSING SENTENCE PARTS<. We complete tonight the easy case of >MISSING or MISREFERENCED SUBJECTS<. REFERENCE: ========= The material in this module comes from the following postings on the Rashi Website http://www.RashiYomi.Com/h8n12.htm http://www.RashiYomi.Com/h8n14.htm TODAYS UNIT =========== In todays unit we give one example like yesterdays examples We then give some new examples. These examples show that ---pronouns dont have to refer back to the 1st immediate noun ---pronouns when they do refer back to the 1st immediate noun may in fact refer to the STAFF of the person. #*#*#*#*#*#*#*#*#*# (C) Dr Hendel, 2000 *#*#*#*#*#*#*#*#*#*#*#*#* EXAMPLE 4: Ex10-05b =================== Ex10-05b says ----------------------------------------------- I(God) will bring >LOCUSTS< tomorrow And >THEY< (the locusts) will cover the ground and >THEY< WILL NOT be able to see the ground ------------------------------------------------ RASHI: It sounds like the LOCUSTS cant see the ground Actually it is people who cant see the ground So the verse simply says that >LOCUSTS will cover the ground and hence people will not be able to see it< EXAMPLE 5: Gn48-01a ========= Gn48-01 and the surrounding verses state: --------------------------------------------------------- and JACOB said SWEAR TO ME and JOSEPH swore and JACOB bowed to him. After these events HE said >YOUR FATHER IS SICK<; ---------------------------------------------------------- It sounds as if >JACOB< told Joseph he was sick. Rashi points out that this is not necessarily so. The verse simply means that as we say in English >After these events SOMEONE told Joseph YOUR FATHER IS SICK< As Rashi correctly says on this verse EITHER interpretation is correct. It could be JACOB who sent a message to Joseph that he was sick, OR, it could be SOMEONE told him. (Rashi also gives a natural sentimental realistic interpretation: Maybe Menashe and Ephraim would go to Grandpa Jacob to learn with him and Jacob told Joseph he was sick thru the grandchildren. This possibility applies to the next example also) EXAMPLE 6: Gn48-02a ========= Gn48-01 and the surrounding verses state ------------------------------------------------------------ After these things SOMEONE told Joseph >YOUR FATHER IS SICK< And >HE< (Joseph) took his two sons with him And >HE< told Jacob >Your Son Joseph is coming< ------------------------------------------------------------ Thus it sounds as if JOSEPH announced his own coming. But as in the last verse, Rashi points out that either Joseph announced his own coming, OR someone from Josephs staff announced it. EXAMPLE 7: Ex10-11c ========== ---------------------------------------------------------- And >HE< (Pharoh) said..this is not so;only adults may go; And >HE< banished them ---------------------------------------------------------- RASHI: ===== It sounds like PHAROH banished them Actually his staff BANISHED them (Not necessarily Pharoh) #*#*#*#*#*#*#*#*#*# (C) Dr Hendel, 2000 *#*#*#*#*#*#*#*#*#*#*#*#*
