This collection contains postings on such matters as * Derivation of the next world from verses in the Bible * A Rational Psychological explanation of the EVIL EYE * Who/What is Satan * What is Sin? Let us now return to the RashiYomi. OVERVIEW: ======== This new module deals with Rashis which explain verses where a sentence part is MISSING. There are 4 cases of >MISSING SENTENCE PARTS<. TODAYS POSTING ============== Today we deal with 3 verses/Rashis where an >IF< statement is missing a >CONSEQUENCE<. This is common in all languages where people use >MACHO< language: For example, >IF you dare do such and such< Such a sentence >EVOKES< an image in the listener who complets the unfinished sentence with their worst fear. Hence, such an evokative technique has prophylactic value. REFERENCE: ========= The material in this module comes from the following postings on the Rashi Website http://www.RashiYomi.Com/h8n12.htm http://www.RashiYomi.Com/h8n14.htm #*#*#*#*#*#*#*#*#*# (C) Dr Hendel, 2000 *#*#*#*#*#*#*#*#*#*#*#*#* EXAMPLE 8: Gn04-15a ========= BACKGROUND ---------- God had just banished Kayin from Gan Eden for murdering his brother. Kayin protests that he will be vulnerable. God says ------------------------------------------------------------ >INDEED IF ANYONE KILLS YOU...<: (But) You will be given 7 generations till I avenge your murder of your brother and kill you ------------------------------------------------------------ RASHI: The capped words >INDEED IF ANYONE KILLS YOU...< is an incomplete sentence. It follows the patterns of macho people who use tough language without being specific (Eg >I Swear if you dare do such and such<) Rashi brings similar macho verses such as 2Sam5-8 >IF anyone touches the Yevusi...< These unfinished sentences evoke fear in the ears of the hearer who complete the sentence with the thing they fear the most. EXAMPLE 9: Ex22-22a ========== --------------------------------------------------------- Dont torture orphans and widows! (If you dare tease an orphan at all!) For If they cry out to me I will hear. --------------------------------------------------------- RASHI: There are two IFS in the verse The second >IF< is normal: >IF they pray I will answer them< The first >IF< uses the missing-sentence-half-technique >IF you dare torture them< EXAMPLE 10: Ex32-32a EXAMPLE 11: Ex32-32b says ========================= -------------------------------------------------- Please forgive the Jews for making the golden calf >IF YOU FORGIVE THEM< ElseIf Not erase me from the Torah --------------------------------------------------- RASHI: The first part of the verse uses the technique of an IF WITH A MISSING COMPONENT: >IF you forgive them< By which Moses meant, IF ONLY YOU FORGIVE THEM HOW WONDERFUL IT WOULD BE The second half is normal and shows how upset Moses was. --------------------------FOOTNOTES--------------------------- Rashi adds that Moses wanted to be erased from the Torah if God didnt forgive the Jews since he regarded the not forgiving the JEWS as a failure on HIS part(and he didnt want to be embarassed) Rashi derives this using the technique of OTHER VERSES Indeed in Nu11-15 Moses explicitly says ------------------------------------------------------- And if this is what you do to me then please kill me if you will do me one last favor so that I should not see my failure ------------------------------------------------------- So we see that Moses explicitly says that he doesnt want to see the >BAD THAT HAPPENS TO ME<(ie his failure) #*#*#*#*#*#*#*#*#*# (C) Dr Hendel, 2000 *#*#*#*#*#*#*#*#*#*#*#*#*
