There are 4 methods of >MISSING SENTENCE PARTS<. We have so far dealt with 3. TODAYS POSTING ============== Today we deal with 3 verses/Rashis where Rashi adds a WORD thereby CLARIFYING the verse. Without this added word the verse would translate in an amusing and absurd manner. REFERENCE: ========= The material in this module comes from the following postings on the Rashi Website http://www.RashiYomi.Com/h8n12.htm http://www.RashiYomi.Com/h8n14.htm http://www.RashiYomi.Com/h8n15.htm #*#*#*#*#*#*#*#*#*# (C) Dr Hendel, 2000 *#*#*#*#*#*#*#*#*#*#*#*#* EXAMPLE 14: Gn40-04a ========== Gn40-04a says ----------------------------------------------------------- And the Prison Executioner appointed Joseph TO BE with them ----------------------------------------------------------- The actual verse is missing the capped words >TO BE<. That is the actual verse reads >And the Prison Executioner appointed Joseph with them< As the Sifsay Chachamim wryly points out -------------------------------------------------- It sounds like the Joseph and them (the Baker and chief wine seller) were all appointed together -------------------------------------------------- By adding the words >TO BE< we CLARIFY the sentences meaning >And the Prison Executioner appointed Joseph TO BE with them< EXAMPLE 15: Gn13-06a ========== RASHI: The verse actually states ------------------------------------------------ the land was not sufficient for both of them ------------------------------------------------ This makes it sound like they had too many people and there werent enough apartments. The verse is missing a word and should read ----------------------------------------------------------- The PASTURE of the land was not sufficient for both of them ----------------------------------------------------------- COMMENT ------- Rashi presents a grammatical argument for the above: The word SUFFICIENT is masculine; hence it would link to PASTURE which is also masculine but it would not link to LAND which is feminine. Thus it would appear that this Rashi is grammatical. But since all the other Rashis in this series do NOT have grammatical support we conclude that this grammatical defense brought by Rashi is ONLY incidental to his main point which is that verses can be missing parts. EXAMPLE 16: Nu24-14c ========== BACKGROUND ---------- Nu24-14c is presenting the advice that Bilam gave Balak, King of Moab, concerning the Jews. -------------------------------------------- I will give you advice that which this nation will do to you at the end of days -------------------------------------------- Thus it sounds as if Bilam was giving Balak advice on how to get beat up at the end of days by the Jews. By inserting a word we clarify the meaning of the verse ---------------------------------------------------- I will give you advice TO COUNTERACT that which this nation will do to you at the end of days ---------------------------------------------------- #*#*#*#*#*#*#*#*#*# (C) Dr Hendel, 2000 *#*#*#*#*#*#*#*#*#*#*#*#*
