GOALS
=====
Today we summarize the NAMING series.
A person completing this series will be familiar
with the
---The 2 main ways of naming things--by FUNCTION and FORM
(e.g. PENTAGON names an object by its FORM, what it looks
like, while UNITED NATIONS names an object by its GOAL
and FUNCTION)
---The 8 ways of naming things
---Many Rashis where a concept is named by FORM
e.g THIGH means BOTTOM because THIGHS are on bottom
---Many Rashis where a concepts is named by FUNCTION
(Thus the FLAME of the MENORAH refers to its WICK
whose FUNCTION is to maintain the FLAME)

CONCEPTS NAMED BY GOOD EXAMPLES & EXAGGERATION |
Some concepts are named by GOOD EXAMPLES. For example the
word HONEY can mean ANYTHING SWEET.
This is closely related to the concept of EXAGGERATION--e.g.
BREAKFAST is the meal that BREAKS your FAST, an exaggeration
since you arent really FASTING the whole night.
Still another way to think of this is to view a word as having
a NARROW and BROAD meaning. For example, a word like DAY
can refer to the 12 hour lit period which is a GOOD EXAMPLE
of the whole 24 hour day. Hence DAY can refer either to
the LIT period or the whole day
The following Candellabrah parts like the word DAY have
SPECIFIC and GENERAL meanings.
We will shortly, in about a week, supplement this list,
with about a dozen other examples from POETRY RASHIS where
abstract ideas are indicated by GOOD EXAMPLES or EXAGGERATION
Other non-Rashi examples are found in the footnotes*1 |
(#) | VERSE | ITEM | NARROW MEANING | BROAD MEANING |
