========================== COUNTEREXAMPLES ======================

VERY BRIEF SUMMARY
------------------
Just as there are rules of MEANING (the dictionary) and rules
of GRAMMAR, so too there are rules of PARAGRAPH DEVELOPMENT. Dr
Leibowitz and her followers emphasized the MEANING-GRAMMAR aspect
of Rashi but not the PARAGRAPH rules. One method of PARAGRAPHING
is to state a topic sentence followed by many EXAMPLES(See the
list below). However the Biblical paragraph Nu13-27:29 uses
a COUNTEREXAMPLE to develop the theme that ISRAEL IS BAD. Rashi
explains that when your topic sentence is false (ISRAEL IS BAD)
it is best to admit some COUNTEREXAMPLES (ISRAEL HAS MILK&HONEY)
since the admission of partial truths makes you more credible.

TODAYS RASHI RULE: GRAMMAR
TODAYS RASHI SUBRULE: PARAGRAPH DEVELOPMENT
-------------------------------------------

BRIED DESCRIPTION OF RULE and SUBRULE
-------------------------------------
Rashi has 6 main goals. One of them is to explain GRAMMAR.
Most people think of VERB CONJUGATIONS and GENDER AGREEMENT
when you mention GRAMMAR. These are the topics typically
taught in School. But the (beautiful) theory of Paragraph
development is also part of grammar.

Recall that a paragraph has a TOPIC SENTENCE which is
then DEVELOPED. The key to good writing is to skillfully
develop the topic sentence.

One basic method of DEVELOPMENT is to list EXAMPLES of
the topic sentence. See the LIST below for Biblical
paragraphs developed by this method.

SUGGESTED EXERCISES
-------------------
Here are some good exercises for Rabbis, beginners
and school teachers.
-- find some Biblical paragraphs
-- identify the topic sentence
-- identify the method of development

RASHIS SOLUTION
---------------
- Nu13-27:29 is a Biblical paragraph
- The topic sentence is that Israel is bad for conquest
- This theme is developed by using EXAMPLES
- But a counterexample is also presented:Israel has Milk&Honey
- Rashi explains that a counterexample is good development
technique when your topic sentence is false--it enhances
  your credibility

TODAYS LIST
-----------
We now list Biblical paragraphs and their method of development
==================================================================
PARAGRAPH TOPIC SENTENCE EXAMPLES USED TO DEVELOP PARAGRAPH
=========== ================== ===================================
Ecc12-01:07 Old age bad bones, dim eyes, anxiety
Ps23 God is my Shepard Green meadows, tranquil streams...
Lv01 The UP Offering From Cattle, Sheep, Birds
Nu18-08:20 Priestly gifts sacrifices,1st fruits,1st born....
Nu13-17:29 Israel is bad*1 Milk&Honey;brazen people,fortified

NOTES
-----
*1 As indicated above the paragraph theme ISRAEL IS BAD is
   developed by the following themes
-- It has milk and honey
   -- its people are BRAZEN
-- it is well fortified (Against our attack)
   -- the people are gians
-- it has an alliance with our enemy AMALEK (Nu13-29a)
-- it has strong nations on its borders(Preventing attack)

Rashi explains that the first point (That it has milk and
honey) is a counterexample to the theme that we shouldnt
try and conquer Israel. Rashi explains that a counterexample
is a good development technique for a false topic sentence
   since it enhances your credibility
