VERSE: Nu18-19a

The derivation of Rashi proceeds in 3 steps

STEP 1: Chapter Nu18-19 is stated using a GENERAL-PARTICULAR-GENERAL
------style as compactly presented in the footnote *1 This style
indicates that we are NOT PICKY on the examples but rather
interpret them generously or generalize them


STEP 2: The verse says "the meat of FIRSTBORN PRIESTLY GIFTS
------ shall belong to the priests the same way the THIGH and
BREAST gifts belong to the priest"(Nu18-18).


STEP 3: But there are 2 sacrifices where priests get the THIGH
------ and BREAST: The Thanksgiving and Peace offering. One of
these must be consumed with 24 hours while the other is consumed
within 36. (Details are exhibited in footnote *2) Which of these
2 other sacrifices do we compare the firstborn to?


STEP 4: Using the principle mentioned in step 1 (that the
------chapter is interpreted liberally) we say the FIRSTBORN
can be eaten for 36 hours (the most liberal interpretation)*3

Hebrew verb H-Y-H which always denotes emphasis. Thus there
is emphasis in the phrase "These gifts **WILL BELONG** to
the priests"--hence you give it to them for 36 hours vs 24 hours.
