We begin with two simple examples. REFERENCES ========== A material in this module comes from http://www.rashiyomi.com/ov.htm Please feel free to browse there. Example 2 in this article comes from my latest set of >COMPLETE RASHI RULES<---a neat 4 page paper on Rashi. This paper can be found at http://www.RashiYomi.Com/rules9-6.htm You can also download a Rich Text Format version of this file #*#*#*#*#*#*#*#*#*# (C) Dr Hendel, 2000 *#*#*#*#*#*#*#*#*#*#*#*#* EXAMPLE 1: Dt26-05d ========= Dt26-05d says >From a non-jew, my father, Jacob, became jobless & He went down to Egypt WITH ONLY A FEW PEOPLE< RASHI: Indeed, it says in Gn46-27 that >Jacob came down to Egypt with only 70 people< This statement that Jacob came down with 70 people confirms what it says in Dt26-05d that Jacob came down with >ONLY A FEW PEOPLE< Rashi here has performed the most elemental type of research method--the method of >CROSS REFERENCE< Notice how what Rashi did could >NOT< be done by computer. For if I looked in a computer for the phrase >WITH ONLY A FEW PEOPLE< I would not find Gn46-27. Instead I have to >UNDERSTAND< that >70 people< is a good example of >A FEW PEOPLE< Thus this cross reference is a >HUMAN CROSS REFERENCE< This type of Rashi, where Rashi performs a >CROSS REFERENCE< is a common technique which we shall see in many other Rashis. Notice how the cross reference enhances meaning since I now understand that >A FEW PEOPLE< means >70 people< EXAMPLE 2: Gn35-22a ========= Gn35-22a, states that >Reuven went and slept with Bilhah his father's concubine< Surprisingly, Rashi states that Reuven did not sleep with his fathers maid. Instead he took his father's favorite bedspreads, which were on Bilhah's bed, and placed them on Leah's bed---Reuven did this because it was insulting that his father should live with a maid (Bilhah) vs a full fledged wife(Leah). The Bible recounts this as if Reuven slept with Bilhah. This Rashi looks peculiar If the Bible says that Reuben slept with Bilhah why does Rashi contradict this. This Rashi however is made simple when we use an OTHER VERSE: Gn49-04 explicitly states that >Reuven played with his father's bedS< ---as the plural >s< in beds shows, Reuven's crime was playing with bedspreads, not incest! Hence, Rashi is Simple. In this posting I cannot give full details: Why, for example, does the Bible state he slept with Bilhah if he didn't? Why did I translate the Hebrew root Ayin-Lamed-Hey, in Gn49-04, as to play, which is the meaning of the cognate root Ayin-Lamed-Lamed? I have not answered these questions. However, while I have omitted some details, I have given a taste of the direction I would take. As already commented the above two paragraphs come from my article on the complete set of Rashi rules.
