OVERVIEW:
========
In this module we explore Rashis that derive their
lesson from OTHER VERSES.

There are three basic techniques of Rashi in these
verses.

CROSS REFERENCES THAT CONFIRM
=============================
One basic technique of Rashi in these verses is to
>CONFIRM BIBLICAL CROSS REFERENCE<. Thus the Bible
might say >I GOD PROMISE YOU SUCH AND SUCH AS I
HAVE SAID< and Rashi will then indicate where God
has said this.

CROSS REFERENCES THAT CLARIFY
=============================
A Second basic technique of Rashi in these verses is to
>CLARIFY MEANING IN ONE VERSE BY AN OTHER VERSE<.

CROSS REFERENCES THAT DEFINE
============================
A third technique is where the Bible explicitly says
>DO PROCEDURE X THE SAME WAY I TOLD YOU TO DO PROCEDURE Y<

TODAYS UNIT
===========
In todays unit we bring some more examples of words whose
meaning is learned from an OTHER VERSE where the meaning
is made specific.

#*#*#*#*#*#*#*#*#*# (C) Dr Hendel, 2000 *#*#*#*#*#*#*#*#*#*#*#*#*

EXAMPLE 34: Lv09-07d
==========
BACKGROUND:
----------
The Bible is speaking about the offerings of the Jewish nation
on the occasion of the consecration of the temple

THE RASHI
---------
Lv09-07 days >..The offerings of the nation
           These were a goat, lamb and CALF<

Rashi says every place that the Torah uses the word >CALF<
it means a >ONE< year old member of the ox family. You learn
this from the explicit statement in Lv09-03 >a ONE YEAR OLD CALF<

COMMENT
-------
The above analysis follows the rule of Rabbi Ishmael:
---------------------------------------------------------------
Every group with some unspecified property (like all verses
with the word >CALF< which means a >YOUNG< ox but we dont know
how >YOUNG<);

If this property is specified in some verse
(like Lv09-03 which says a >ONE YEAR OLD CALF<),

Then this Creates a general rule that
all members of the class have
this property(so the word >CALF< in the Bible means a
>ONE YEAR OLD CALF<)
---------------------------------------------------------------

The word calf occurs about 4 dozen times in Tnach. In only two
of them (Lv09-03 and Mich6-6) does it specify that the >CALF<
is >ONE YEAR OLD<.There is no verse that gives an alternative age
This justifies the derivation. (Note that in Jud14-18 Samson
refers to his wife as a >CALF< possibly consistent with the idea
of >My first wedding year<).

EXAMPLE 35: Ex14-24d
==========
The Hebrew root >HMM< which means >CONFUSION< occurs 14 times
in Tnach. In all but one of them the reference is to
>CONFUSION as part of a WAR EFFORT< but the verses do not tell
us what >TYPE< of confusion is being spoken about.

In 2 verses this confusion is explicitly identified with
>CONFUSION by NOISE<. Therefore we infer that in general
>HMM< = >CONFUSE BY NOISE<

The 2 verses where it explicitly identifies >CONFUSE< with
>CONFUSION BY NOISE< are

>And God thundered (the Philistines) with a big noise...
and God CONFUSED (HMM) them< (1Sam7-10) and
>He shot LIGHTNING and CONFUSED them<(Ps18-15)(2Sam22-15)

COMMENT
=======
As indicated we now infer that the other 12 verses where
>CONFUSION< occurs refers to >MILITARY CONFUSION BY NOISE<
We present one example:
Ex23-27 says >..and I will CONFUSE the nations you come to<

We in turn suggest that this verse means that God will
>CONFUSE< the Canaanite nations by >NOISE<

Perhaps a partial support of this could be found in the
following verse which deals with the conquest of Canaan.
Josh6-5 >...when the SHOFARS blow and the whole nation SCREAMS
        then the walls of Jericho will fall<
Thus we indeed see that part of the military effort involved
the uses of big noise to confuse the enemy.

Further examples may be found in the hyperlinks above.
The following list shows some of verses with >HMM<

{LIST}
VERSE     IS NOISE
          MENTIONED TEXT
========= ========= ===================================
Ps18-15*1 BY NOISE He Shot LIGHTNING and CONFUSED them
1Sam7-10 BY NOISE God THUNDERED on the Philistines & CONFUSED them
Jos10-10 And God CONFUSED them(the Canaanite nations)
2Ch15-6 For God was CONFUSING all nations
Ex14-24 And God CONFUSED the Egyptian Army
