There are three basic techniques of Rashi in these verses. CROSS REFERENCES THAT CONFIRM ============================= One basic technique of Rashi in these verses is to >CONFIRM BIBLICAL CROSS REFERENCE<. Thus the Bible might say >I GOD PROMISE YOU SUCH AND SUCH AS I HAVE SAID< and Rashi will then indicate where God has said this. CROSS REFERENCES THAT CLARIFY ============================= A Second basic technique of Rashi in these verses is to >CLARIFY MEANING IN ONE VERSE BY AN OTHER VERSE<. CROSS REFERENCES THAT DEFINE ============================ A third technique is where the Bible explicitly says >DO PROCEDURE X THE SAME WAY I TOLD YOU TO DO PROCEDURE Y< REFERENCES ========== Material in this module comes from http://www.rashiyomi.com/ov.htm Example 38 in todays unit comes from http://www.RashiYomi.Com/ri-14.htm Example 40 is discussed in the nine unit EXAMPLE series. See Example 75 in http://www.RashiYomi.Com/example8.htm or see Example 108 in http://www.RashiYomi.Com/example9.htm TODAYS UNIT =========== In todays unit we review examples of OTHER VERSES which resemble other techniques such as DOUBLE PARSHAS or RABBI ISHMAELS METHODS. Here are the details #*#*#*#*#*#*#*#*#*# (C) Dr Hendel, 2000 *#*#*#*#*#*#*#*#*#*#*#*#* EXAMPLE 38: Lv23-08a ========== BACKGROUND ---------- Lv23-08 is speaking about the holiday of passover THE VERSE --------- Lv23-08 says >And you will offer FIRES(sacrifices) to God< THE OTHER VERSE --------------- By contrast Nu28-19 says >And you will offer FIRES as elevation offerings to God...OXEN...LAMBS...He GOATS< Notice how one verse gives DETAILS (OXEN, LAMBS, HE GOATS) while the other verse just gives GENERALITIES. We can resolve this using RABBI ISHMAELS METHOD of resolving contradictory verses. In this case we use the method of RESOLUTION BY DIFFERENT MODALITIES. For a complete discussion see the URLS listed above for other examples. According to this method it follows that --one >SHOULD< offer on Passover, Lambs, Goats, Oxen --but if eg one only had Lambs then one offers only lambs (That is: We do not perceive this as a package deal where you either offer all 3 or none--rather you offer what you can). EXAMPLE 39: Dt25-13b ========== Dt25-13 says >You should not have in your pocket a STONE or a stone big or small (Rather) You should have a perfect righteous stone you should have a perfect righteous VOLUME MEASURE...< As is clear from the CAPPED WORDS, VOLUME MEASURE, the Bible is talking about the requirement of proper weights. This is further clarified in Lv19-36 which says >Righteous scales RIGHTEOUS STONES......< Thus while Dt25-13 steaks about >STONE<, Lv19-35 speaks about >RIGHTEOUS STONES<. The extra word >RIGHTEOUS< illuminates what is being spoken about(As does the context in each verse which also speaks about volumes etc) EXAMPLE 40: Dt11-25a ========== BACKGROUND ========== God is speaking about the conquest of Israel. THE VERSE ========= Dt11-25 >No man will stand before you< RASHI ===== Rashi states this means >There will be no survivors(from your conquests)< At first glance there is no connection between the verse >No man will stand before you< and the Rashi >There will be no survivors from your conquests< But an other verse comes to the rescue. THE OTHER VERSE =============== Dt07-23:24 states >And God will GIVE these nations to you And you will CONQUER them till theyre destroyed And God will DELIVER THEIR KINGS to you and you will ERASE THEIR NAME... NO MAN WILL STAND BEFORE YOU< THE EXPLANATION =============== Notice how both Dt07-23:24 and Dt11-25 have the phrase >NO MAN WILL STAND BEFORE YOU<. This phrase in Dt11-25 doesnt tell us much. But in Dt07-23:24 this phrase occurs as a CLIMACTIC DEVELOPMENT of several other phrases. Indeed using the principle that the Bible develops items using the principle of >CLIMAX< we easily see that ---we will conquer the nations ---we will not let their kings rebuild ---we will not let their national philosphies linger (Which could encourage rebuilding) ---We will not allow ANY SURVIVORS. In other words the Rashi on Dt11-25a is really commenting on the identical phrase in Dt07-23:24 and in Dt07-23:24, this phrase by the principle of CLIMAX, must mean that their will be total conquest.. no kings, philosophies or ANY SURVIVORS. #*#*#*#*#*#*#*#*#*# (C) Dr Hendel, 2000 *#*#*#*#*#*#*#*#*#*#*#*#*
