There are three basic techniques of Rashi in these verses. CROSS REFERENCES THAT CONFIRM ============================= One basic technique of Rashi in these verses is to >CONFIRM BIBLICAL CROSS REFERENCE<. Thus the Bible might say >I GOD PROMISE YOU SUCH AND SUCH AS I HAVE SAID< and Rashi will then indicate where God has said this. CROSS REFERENCES THAT CLARIFY ============================= A Second basic technique of Rashi in these verses is to >CLARIFY MEANING IN ONE VERSE BY AN OTHER VERSE<. CROSS REFERENCES THAT DEFINE ============================ A third technique is where the Bible explicitly says >DO PROCEDURE X THE SAME WAY I TOLD YOU TO DO PROCEDURE Y< REFERENCES ========== Material in this module comes from http://www.rashiyomi.com/ov.htm TODAYS UNIT =========== We are finally finishing our long journey on Rashis that use the technique of OTHER VERSES. We shall have our usual RashiYomiSummary on Sunday or Monday. I hope you have enjoyed this module. Today and tomorrow we present the miscellaneous Rashis left #*#*#*#*#*#*#*#*#*# (C) Dr Hendel, 2000 *#*#*#*#*#*#*#*#*#*#*#*#* EXAMPLE 46: Lv10-03a ========== BACKGROUND ---------- Aarons sons had just offered a sacrifice they were not allowed to They were punished with death. In comforting Aaron, Moses points out that God honors himself with those >CLOSE< to him (implying that the deceased children were close to God). Here are the verses VERSE Lv10-03 ----- >And Moses said to Aaaron..this(the death) is what God said IN THSE CLOSE TO ME I WILL BE SANCTIFIED< (The idea being that if God punishes even great people then those of lower rank will be fearful and respectful of God) CROSS REFERENCE --------------- Those who have been following this series know that Rashi will always verify cross references. But in this case there is no verse which says >THRU THOSE CLOSE TO ME WILL I BE SANCTIFIED< But Rashi finds a closest cross-reference in Ex29-43 which we compare with Ex25-22 ---------------------------------------------------------------- >Ill meet you in the temple & command you....< >Ill meet the Jews in the temple & BE SANCTIFIED BY MY WEIGHT< *1 *1 ---------------------------------------------------------------- NOTES ----- *1 As the extra phrase indicates God is saying two things: ---1st) I will meet the Jews in the temple ---2nd) I will become SANCTIFIED BY MY WEIGHT Rashi links this verse with Lv10-03. Gods >WEIGHT< or >HONOR< is manifested by punishing even those close to him. Thus indeed, >SANCRIFIED BY MY WEIGHT< cross references >SANCTIFIED BY THOSE CLOSE TO ME< EXAMPLE 47: Gn27-42a ========== THE VERSE --------- Gn27-42 says >And Rivkah was told what Esauv planned to do (ie he planned to kill his brother)< RASHI: ----- >RIVKAH WAS TOLD< thru prophecy Note that there is nothing grammatical eg in the use of the phrase >She was told< that would indicate that it was by prophecy that she was told. Rather Rashi can be justified by an OTHER VERSE THE OTHER VERSE --------------- Gn27-41 says explicitly >And Esauv hated Jacob (because he stole the blessings) and Esauv THOUGHT TO HIMSELF: ...I will kill my brother< Thus the Bible explicitly says one verse earlier and emphasizes that Esauv ONLY THOUGHT of Killing Jacob. Hence if the very next verse says that Rivkah >HEARD ABOUT IT< it must be that she heard thru prophecy. For justification that the Hebrew idiom >SPOKE TO HIS HEART< means >THOUGHT TO HIMSELF< see my article PESAHT AND DERASH: A NEW INTUITIVE ANALYTIC APPROACH, Tradition 1980 (If you want a copy email me at RJHendel@Juno.Com and give my your address). #*#*#*#*#*#*#*#*#*# (C) Dr Hendel, 2000 *#*#*#*#*#*#*#*#*#*#*#*#*
