There are three basic techniques of Rashi in these verses. CROSS REFERENCES THAT CONFIRM ============================= One basic technique of Rashi in these verses is to >CONFIRM BIBLICAL CROSS REFERENCE<. Thus the Bible might say >I GOD PROMISE YOU SUCH AND SUCH AS I HAVE SAID< and Rashi will then indicate where God has said this. CROSS REFERENCES THAT CLARIFY ============================= A Second basic technique of Rashi in these verses is to >CLARIFY MEANING IN ONE VERSE BY AN OTHER VERSE<. CROSS REFERENCES THAT DEFINE ============================ A third technique is where the Bible explicitly says >DO PROCEDURE X THE SAME WAY I TOLD YOU TO DO PROCEDURE Y< REFERENCES ========== Material in this module comes from http://www.rashiyomi.com/ov.htm TODAYS UNIT =========== We are finally finishing our long journey on Rashis that use the technique of OTHER VERSES. We shall have our usual RashiYomiSummary on Sunday or Monday. I hope you have enjoyed this module. We have 2 Rashis left from the above URL. They are both complicated so we do one today and one on Saturday night. The Grand summary of 4 dozen Rashis will be presented on Sunday #*#*#*#*#*#*#*#*#*# (C) Dr Hendel, 2000 *#*#*#*#*#*#*#*#*#*#*#*#* EXAMPLE 48: Ex32-05c ========== BACKGROUND ---------- The Bible is describing how the Jews made a golden calf and worshipped it. Aaron had just gathered all the jewelery and the people had made the calf and declared it their god. The next verse says: THE VERSE --------- >And Aaron SAW; he built an altar; and he proclaimed and said A HOLIDAY TO GOD TOMORROW< RASHIS FIRST EXPLANATION ------------------------ Rashi gives a simple explanation why Aaron should have participated >Aaron was stalling for time; since the people built the calf, therefore he alone built the altar so as to stall for time till Moses came down (because it takes longer for one person to build than many)That is also why he delayed the holiday till the next day< In passing Rashi learns that the emphasis that Aaron alone built the altar (vs the people) from the change in the plurality of verbs {LIST} Verbs/activities connected with the golden calf The list is used to justify that Aaron took initiatives to stall for time when he saw how the people behaved ====================================================== ACTIVITY PLURAL/SINGULAR ======== =============== THEY obtained their wives jewelry Plural and THEY brought it to Aaron Plural And HE took it from them Singular and HE smelted it Singular and THEY made a calf Plural and THEY said >this is our god< Plural And HE Saw Singular And HE built an altar Singular and HE proclaimed >a holiday tomorrow< Singular {END OF LIST} RASHIS PREFERRED SECOND EXPLANATION ----------------------------------- Rashis second explanation builds on this first explanation Not only did Aaron stall for time, he also felt he had to participate. The phrase >And Aaron Saw< means >Aaron saw how Chur was murdered in trying to stop them< Extraordinary! How can Rashi milk from the innocent phrase >Aaron saw< that Chur tried to rebuke them and was murdered. THE OTHER VERSE --------------- By now readers of this RashiYomi are familiar with the way an >OTHER VERSE< can shed light and change meaning There is an explicit other verse in Ex32-17:18: And Joshua heard the voices and said to Moses there is a war cry in the community. And Moses answered: This cry does not have the characteristics of a >WAR CALL< nor does it have the characteristics of a >RAPE< rather it has the characteristics of >TORTURE< So this other verse explicitly says that there was murder So Rashi conjectures that Aaron saw the murder and decided to try and stall but give in a little to the people. So Rashi-is-Simple. The Rest of the Rashi that it was Chur that was murdered and that he was murdered in trying to stop them is just a very reasonable guess. For although Chur is listed as being on par with Aaron and the Elders (See Ex24-14) nevertheless we never find him mentioned again. So maybe he was the missing one! Also: If we know that Chur was both a leader and missing it would stand to reason that he tried to rebuke the people (since that was his job) and got murdered while doing so (Since we find that the Jews frequently wanted to stone even Moses). The bottom line: The real driving force behind Rashi is this >OTHER VERSE< which advises us that someone was murdered--it was this murder that pushed Aaron into giving in to the Jews and calling a holiday (in case Moses did not show up). The Rest of Rashi is a reasonable conjecture. #*#*#*#*#*#*#*#*#*# (C) Dr Hendel, 2000 *#*#*#*#*#*#*#*#*#*#*#*#*
