OVERVIEW:
========
In this module we explore Rashis that derive their
lesson from OTHER VERSES.

There are three basic techniques of Rashi in these
verses.

CROSS REFERENCES THAT CONFIRM
=============================
One basic technique of Rashi in these verses is to
>CONFIRM BIBLICAL CROSS REFERENCE<. Thus the Bible
might say >I GOD PROMISE YOU X AS I HAVE SAID< and
Rashi will then indicate where God has said this.

CROSS REFERENCES THAT CLARIFY
=============================
A Second basic technique of Rashi in these verses is to
>CLARIFY MEANING IN ONE VERSE BY AN OTHER VERSE<.

CROSS REFERENCES THAT DEFINE
============================
A third technique is where the Bible explicitly says
>DO PROCEDURE X THE SAME WAY I TOLD YOU TO DO PROCEDURE Y<

TODAYS UNIT
===========
In todays unit we show the POWER of the method of
OTHER VERSES. Most people would interpret Rashi using
complicated lists. Instead a brilliancy of the Malbim
shows Rashi to be simply based on an OTHER verse.

#*#*#*#*#*#*#*#*#*# (C) Dr Hendel, 2000 *#*#*#*#*#*#*#*#*#*#*#*#*

EXAMPLE 21: Lv04-24a
==========
Lv04-24 says >Slaughter this sin offering IN THE SAME PLACE
              that you slaughter ELEVATION OFFERINGS<

Thus capped phrase >IN THE SAME PLACE THAT YOU SLAUGHTER
ELEVATION OFFERINGS< clearly refers to Lv01-11 where it
says

Lv01-11 >And you shall slaughter it(the burnt offering)
        in the NORTHERN SIDE OF THE ALTAR<

EXAMPLE 22: Lv01-05a
==========
On the verse Lv01-05a >And he shall slaughter the offering<
Rashi says >The slaughtering can be done even by a non priest;
while the rest of the sacrificial procedures must be done
by priests<

At first glance it seems as if Rashi is simply >REPORTING<
the law; the law does not seem to be >DERIVED< from the
verse. A complicated derivation from the verse itself
does exist (and is presented below in Footnote *1).

It however was the Malbim who brilliantly and simply
derived Rashi from an OTHER VERSE. Indeed, it explicitly
says in
2Chro30-17 that >The Levites were in charge
                for slaughtering the pascal lambs<
and in
Ez44-11 that >They (the Levites) are in charge of
                slaughtering sacrifices and elevation
                offerings for the nation<

Thus the preferred methodology to be used here is the
derivation from the OTHER VERSE.

-------------------------FOOTNOTES---------------------
*1 The traditional derivation of the Rashi Lv01-05a uses
   the {LIST} of verb-subjects in Lv01. Compare

   {LIST}
   Analysis of Verb-Subjects in Lv01 demonstrating that
   priests are only required from the activity of
   BRINGING (ie RECEIVING) the blood in a temple vessel
   But activities prior (such as SLAUGHTERING) may be
   done by non priests. As can be seen this derivation
   is more complicated than the simple derivation of
   the MALBIM from OTHER VERSES
   =======================================================
   VERSE        SUBJECT ACTIVITY (CAPPED)
   =======      ======= ===================================
   Lv01-03 he shall offer an unblemished mail
                he shall bring it near to the temple
   Lv01-04 he shall LEAN on the head of the animal
   Lv01-05 he shall SLAUGHTER the animal
                Priests shall BRING the blood near *a
                they    shall THROW the blood
   {END OF LIST}

   NOTES
   =====
   *a So it is clear that only from the activity of BRINGING
      (ie RECEIVING) the blood is a PRIEST required.
