There are three basic techniques of Rashi in these verses. CROSS REFERENCES THAT CONFIRM ============================= One basic technique of Rashi in these verses is to >CONFIRM BIBLICAL CROSS REFERENCE<. Thus the Bible might say >I GOD PROMISE YOU X AS I HAVE SAID< and Rashi will then indicate where God has said this. CROSS REFERENCES THAT CLARIFY ============================= A Second basic technique of Rashi in these verses is to >CLARIFY MEANING IN ONE VERSE BY AN OTHER VERSE<. CROSS REFERENCES THAT DEFINE ============================ A third technique is where the Bible explicitly says >DO PROCEDURE X THE SAME WAY I TOLD YOU TO DO PROCEDURE Y< REFERENCES ========== Material in this module comes from http://www.rashiyomi.com/ov.htm TODAYS UNIT =========== In todays unit we show how cross referencing can occur even where the verse does not explicitly state >AS GOD SAID< Very often a verse says >Such and such happened<. A simple exercise is then to show >WHERE and HOW< this event happened. This, cross-referencing, is the most basic type of research. It is interesting that the Passover Haggadah is built around exegesis that is totally backed up by cross referencing. Apparently on Passover which is a holiday of education our Sages wanted to introduce us to >LEARNING< by showing us the simplest of all >LEARNING TECHNIQUES< #*#*#*#*#*#*#*#*#*# (C) Dr Hendel, 2000 *#*#*#*#*#*#*#*#*#*#*#*#* EXAMPLE 23: Dt33-09a ========== Dt33-09a says >(Levi) said I dont recognize my parents and I didnt recognize my brothers and I wasnt familiar with my children< Rashi confirms Levis not recognizing his family with the specific incident mentioned in Ex32-25:28 Ex32-25:28 says >And Moses said (to the Jews who had just made the Golden calf) WHO HERE BELONGS TO GOD, and **ALL** The levites gathered to him. And Moses said to them this is what God..said PLACE YOUR SWORDS ON YOUR THIGHS go thru the whole camp and kill EVERY PERSON HIS BROTHER HIS FRIEND & HIS RELATIVE In other words at the sin of the Golden calf no Levite sinned*1 and the Levites EXECUTED those who did sin. The language the Bible uses is >KILL EVERY PERSON HIS BROTHER,FRIEND & RELATIVE< This cross references and confirms Dt33-09 which says >I didnt recognize my PARENTS BROTHERS AND CHILDREN. EXAMPLE 24: Dt33-09b ========== Dt33-09 continues >For he(Levi) OBSERVED YOUR SAYINGS< Recall from EXAMPLE 23 above that we are discussing how Levi did not participate in the sin of the Golden calf. Malbim therefore simply shows that the statement in Dt33-09 >FOR LEVI OBSERVED YOUR SAYINGS< is cross referenced by Ex32-27:28 which says that >Levy LISTENED TO WHAT MOSES SAID THAT GOD SAID: TO KILL/EXECUTE THOSE WHO SINNED< I believe this cross reference to be the simple meaning of the verse. Rashi simply adds to Malbims explanation by citing the Decalogue (Ex20-03) that the execution of those who worshipped the Golden calf was justified by the fact that they had violated the prohibition of idolatry whose punishment is death (eg Dt17-02:07). NOTE: ---- Rashi simply cross references the prohibition of Idolatry. This cross reference is given more SPECIFICITY by Malbim who shows that the punishment for this sin was implemented against those who sinned at the Golden calf. For this reason I look on this Malbim as a >CLARIFICATION< rather than a >DISAGREEMENT< with Rashi. -------------------------FOOTNOTES--------------------- *1 We learn that **NO** Levite sinned from the word **ALL**. For Ex32-26 says >And **ALL** Levites gathered to Moses (when Moses asked who else believes in God)< The word >ALL< has 5 meanings in the Bible one of which is >NO EXCEPTIONS<. This shows that >NO< Levite sinned.
