There are three basic techniques of Rashi in these verses. CROSS REFERENCES THAT CONFIRM ============================= One basic technique of Rashi in these verses is to >CONFIRM BIBLICAL CROSS REFERENCE<. Thus the Bible might say >I GOD PROMISE YOU SUCH AND SUCH AS I HAVE SAID< and Rashi will then indicate where God has said this. CROSS REFERENCES THAT CLARIFY ============================= A Second basic technique of Rashi in these verses is to >CLARIFY MEANING IN ONE VERSE BY AN OTHER VERSE<. CROSS REFERENCES THAT DEFINE ============================ A third technique is where the Bible explicitly says >DO PROCEDURE X THE SAME WAY I TOLD YOU TO DO PROCEDURE Y< REFERENCES ========== Material in this module comes from http://www.rashiyomi.com/ov.htm TODAYS UNIT =========== In todays unit we first give two verses where the cross reference arises because of the Biblical phrase >AS I HAVE SAID<. This is followed by a beautiful example where the technique of >CROSS REFERENCE< emerges, not as a passive interpretive technique, but as a creative interpretive act. #*#*#*#*#*#*#*#*#*# (C) Dr Hendel, 2000 *#*#*#*#*#*#*#*#*#*#*#*#* EXAMPLE 25: Ex12-25b ========== Ex12-25c says >And when you come to the land which God will give you AS HE SAID< The CAPPED WORDS >AS HE SAID< cross references any of the many verses where God actually said he would bring us to Israel. Thus Ex06-08 says >And I(God) will bring you to the land that I promised to give to Abraham Isaac and Jacob and I will give it to you as an inheritance..< EXAMPLE 26: Gn24-07e ========== Gn24-07e says >God, the Lord of Heaven...who took me from my fathers house....and WHO SWORE TO ME SAYING: To your descendants do I give this land< The CAPPED WORDS >WHO SWORE TO ME SAYING< cross references the >Treaty of the Cut pieces< where God promised to give Abraham the land. Thus Gn15-18 states >On that day God made a convenant with Abraham saying: To your descendants will I give this land...< EXAMPLE 27: Gn26-05e ========== BACKGROUND ---------- Gn26 is speaking about how God promised to Isaac,Israel because of Gods promises to Abraham. The exact citation is Gn26-05 ------- Gn26-05 >(I give you these) BECAUSE ABRAHAM LISTENED TO MY VOICE< WHAT IS CROSS-REFERENCED ------------------------ There are many places where Abraham listened to God. However in one of these places, the Bible uses the >EXACT SAME WORDS< Gn22 discusses the famous test of Abraham:The offering of Isaac. God complements Abraham for listening to his orders. Gn22-18 says >In your descendants will be blessed all nations BECAUSE YOU LISTENED TO MY VOICE< The identicality of these 2 phrases (Gn26-05) >BECAUSE ABRAHAM LISTENED TO MY VOICE< and (Gn22-18) >BECAUSE YOU LISTENED TO MY VOICE< motivates Rashi to state that the two verses are cross-referencing each other. SUMMARY ------- The above example gives us an insight on how >CROSS REFERENCING< can be used as a creative vehicle of interpretation-- the cross reference enables us to identify WHAT is being cross referenced. #*#*#*#*#*#*#*#*#*# (C) Dr Hendel, 2000 *#*#*#*#*#*#*#*#*#*#*#*#*
