There are 4 methods by which PLEASE is used. TODAYS UNIT =========== In todays unit we complete presentation of those Rashis where >NA< means >PLEASE< in the social sense. We bring two new examples and review the examples from the previous 2 issues. REFERENCE: ========= This module comes from the following digest in the Rashi-is-Simple series http://www.RashiYomi.Com/nu10-31a.htm The following references are a bit longer http://www.RashiYomi.Com/h4n12.htm http://www.RashiYomi.Com/h4n14.htm http://www.RashiYomi.Com/h2n12.htm #*#*#*#*#*#*#*#*#*# (C) Dr Hendel, 2001 *#*#*#*#*#*#*#*#*#*#*#*#* EXAMPLES ======== These 2 examples are new ------------------------ EXAMPLE 8:Gn38-16a Please PREPARE yourself for the prostitution*1 EXAMPLE 9:Gn18-04a Please let water be taken to you*2 These 4 examples are from previous issues ----------------------------------------- EXAMPLE 3:Gn27-22a PLEASE get up (Gn27-19) vs GET UP (Gn27-31)*3 EXAMPLE 5:Nu12-12a Please don't let us die of leprosy *4 EXAMPLE 6:Nu12-13a GOD, PLEASE....Please cure her *5 EXAMPLE 7:Nu16-08a Please listen (Moses to Korach and his mob)*6 ----------------------------NOTES-------------------------------- *1 The Hebrew word >HVH< always means >TO NEGOTIATE, PREPARE, DISCUSS A PLAN OR TRADE<. Thus here Judah was negotiating purchasing a prostitute for the night. His use of the word >PLEASE< ie >PLEASE LET US DISCUSS A PURCHASE< shows his manners and character traits. How many men would use the word >PLEASE< with a prostitute *2 Rashi points that the contrast that --in this phrase the verb is passive (>Let water BE TAKEN<) By contrast in the other phrases the verb is active --WASH your feet --RELAX under the tree --EAT a meal Hence Rashi concludes >The water was taken by a messenger while the other acts were personally done by Abraham (ie Abraham had one of his servants help them with the bathing-- since this is personal he did not do it himself) *3 Rashi points out the contrast that JACOB was POLITE (>PLEASE get up<) while ESAUV was COARSE (>GET UP< without Please) *4 Rashis actual language is >She is our sister<. I believe this emphasis came from the word >PLEASE<. *5 Rashis actual language is >Moses used the word PLEASE twice. This is proper manners. When you request something you should always begin with 2 or 3 words of SUPPLICATION< *6 Rashi notes the contrast between the calm >PLEASE LISTEN< vs the confrontational >Dont you have enough honor< in the next verse and the even harsher vindicative tone >God please dont accept their prayers< a little later in the chapter. Rashi explains that Moses tried to be conciliatory. But when he saw that Korach wouldnt listen Moses became tough to prevent further people from joining. #*#*#*#*#*#*#*#*#*# (C) Dr Hendel, 2001 *#*#*#*#*#*#*#*#*#*#*#*#*
