Chazal say that the etymology of MMZR comes from its two 2-letter components---MM(blemish) and ZR(Stranger). Hence ILLEGITIMATE (mmzr) = BLEMISHED (mm) by a STRANGER(ZR) Quite simply then the rule states that the meaning of 4 and 5 letter roots can be derived by breaking up the root into two 2 or 3-letter words. Some examples from Rashi are presented below TODAYS UNIT =========== In todays unit we look at two examples of this rule. REFERENCE: ========= This module comes from the following digest in the Rashi-is-Simple series http://www.RashiYomi.Com/gn49-12a.htm For lengthier less compact sources see http://www.RashiYomi.Com/h1n15.htm http://www.RashiYomi.Com/h1n3.htm http://www.RashiYomi.Com/h4n18.htm http://www.RashiYomi.Com/h5n23.htm #*#*#*#*#*#*#*#*#*# (C) Dr Hendel, 2001 *#*#*#*#*#*#*#*#*#*#*#*#* EXAMPLES ======== EXAMPLE 1: Gn41-45a Pharoh called Joseph TZAFNATH PAANAYACH ========= (1) VERSE:Gn41-45a Josephs Egyptian name, TZFNATH PAANACH can be explained as a hybrid radical---- RASHI: "He brings out(POA) the hidden(TZFN) from dormancy(NCH)" In other words Joseph was intelligent EXAMPLE 2: Ex25-04b ..and bring ARGMN wool (2) RASHI: ARGMN (purple)=WOVEN (Arg) for APPOINTED people(MN) In other words, ARGMN is the color used in Royal garments*1 -------------------------NOTES-------------------------------- *1 Rashi EXPLICITLY states the 4 letter derivation in (1) but not in Example (2). However consistent with our methodology we apply this technique to other 4 letter roots where Rashi commented. #*#*#*#*#*#*#*#*#*# (C) Dr Hendel, 2001 *#*#*#*#*#*#*#*#*#*#*#*#*
