GOALS
=====
This module reviews the 10 meanings of the Hebrew root
Shin-Lamed-Chet. The root means TO SEND, TO LET GO, or TO
INCITE, in the ACTIVE, INTENSIVE or CAUSATIVE mode. This
module also affords us an exciting opportunity to see how
the great commentators like Rashi, Radack complement each other.

TODAYS UNIT
===========
Today we review the INTENSIVE meaning of SH-L-CH. It basically
means to LET GO. It can also have related meanings like
TO ESCORT (When you LET visitors OUT), TABLE (on which you
LET OUT food) etc.

SH-L-CH has 10 meanings

BACKGROUND
----------
It is well known that Hebrew consists of 3 letter roots. Each
3 letter root is assigned a meaning. These roots can then be
CONJUGATED to indicate such things as PERSON, PLURALITY, GENDER
etc. There are many books which contain rules of conjugation.

THE TEXT
--------
The Hebrew root Shin-Lamed-Chet has 10 meanings. It is natural
to try to group similar meanings together.

THE BASIC RULE
--------------
-- in the ACTIVE MODE, Shlach, means TO SEND
-- in the INTENSIVE MODE, Shlach, means TO LET GO
-- in the CAUSATIVE MODE, Shlach, means to INCITE

THE LIST
--------
Today we present 4 Rashis commenting on Shlach in the
causative mode where it means to LET OUT or TO ESCORT (Something
done when LETTING PEOPLE OUT). Footnote *2 lists 6 additional
meanings brought by the Radack which Rashi does not comment on.
For example Shlach means TO DIVORCE, that is, LETTING OUT your
wife. Here is the list.
MODE MEANING CONNECTION VERSE TEXT OF VERSE
INTENSIVE LET OUT LET OUT Gn43-14c LET OUT of prison*4
INTENSIVE LET OUT LET OUT Gn08-08b LET dove OUT of ark
INTENSIVE ESCORT Help OUT Gn12-20b They ESCORTED Abram*8
INTENSIVE ESCORT Help OUT Gn18-16b Abraham ESCORTED them
COMMENTS
*1 This meaning is pointed out both by Rashi and Radack

*2 The Radack also lists the following meanings of Sh-L-Ch
in the intensive(These meanings do not occur in Rashi).
The intensive form of Shin-Lamed-Chet can also mean
   ------------------------------------------------------
   MEANING CONNECTION VERSE SAMPLE TEXT
   ----------- ----------- -------- ---------------------
Divorce Let out Dt24-01 & he divorces her
Table Place OUT Ez41-22 ..the tables
EXTEND Hand Let it OUT Ex02-09 LET her hand OUT
Branch out Branch OUT Ps80-12 ..branches BRANCH OUT
Sword Like branch 2C23-10 each had his sword
Canal Branchs OUT Isa08-06 the CANAL waters
   ------------------------------------------------------

With regard to the last meaning -- CANAL -- it occurs
only once in Tenach. Radack suggests that its
etymology is due to the fact that CANALS BRANCH OUT.
I would add that these irrigation canals irrigate
LONG BRANCHES and SHOOTS that hang out in gardens.
