GOALS ===== This module reviews the 10 meanings of the Hebrew root Shin-Lamed-Chet. The root means TO SEND, TO LET GO, or TO INCITE, in the ACTIVE, INTENSIVE or CAUSATIVE mode. This module also affords us an exciting opportunity to see how the great commentators like Rashi, Radack complement each other. TODAYS UNIT =========== Today we present two Rashis commenting on Shlach in the CAUSATIVE mode where it means TO INCITE. BACKGROUND ---------- It is well known that Hebrew consists of 3 letter roots. Each 3 letter root is assigned a meaning. These roots can then be CONJUGATED to indicate such things as PERSON, PLURALITY, GENDER etc. There are many books which contain rules of conjugation. THE TEXT -------- The Hebrew root Shin-Lamed-Chet has 10 meanings. It is natural to try to group similar meanings together. THE BASIC RULE -------------- -- in the ACTIVE MODE, Shlach, means TO SEND -- in the INTENSIVE MODE, Shlach, means TO LET GO -- in the CAUSATIVE MODE, Shlach, means to INCITE THE LIST -------- Today we bring two examples of SHLACH in the CAUSATIVE mode. It is interesting that RADACK does NOT interpret these verses with a special meaning. Rashi however interprets SHLACH in the causative mode as meaning to INCITE. Here is the list the footnotes contain details on the controversy. | ||||
MODE | MEANING | CONNECTION | VERSE | TEXT OF VERSE |
CAUSATIVE | INCITE | INCITE | Lv26-22a | INCITE animals on them |
CAUSATIVE | INCITE | INCITE | Ex08-17a | INCITE against them*3 |

*11 This translation of SHLACH--to INCITE-- occurs in Rashi but not in Radack. Radack simply interprets this verse as I WILL SEND ANIMALS AGAINST THEM. Rashi however adds a nuance by interpreting I WILL INCITE ANIMALS AGAINST THEM. We prefer Rashi over Radack since Rashis added nuance is connected with the causative mode. |
