Subject: Re: Bat Mitzvahs

The subject of "how to celebrate Bat Mitzvahs" has come up recently (e.g.
Danmin@aol.com (V4n76) or Hamm (V4n80).

At my neices Bat Mitzvah in Elizabeth my brother-in-law made a Siyum of
Ketuboth prior to the seudah. When I asked him for an explanation he
suggested that

a) On the one hand he didn't want to contribute to making a new minhag of
legitimizing a new minhag of bat mitvahs while
(b) on the other hand he did not want to deprive his daughter of what every
one else has. So he made a siyum converting the meal into a seudat mitzvah.
© He chose Ketuboth so no one should accuse him of finishing a small
maseceth quickly for purposes of the seudah.
