Actually Jewish Law explicitly states that one can lie for 4 reasons (a)
Lie about your host so people should not burden him (b) lie about what bed
you slept in for reasons of modesty (c) lie to bring peace between husband
and wife (d) lie about which part of Jewish Law you know (so people should
not ask you questions).

The above is LAW. There is also a MORAL reason why we are allowed to lie.
According to the Agadda, TRUTH is only G-d's seal, while PEACE is G-d's
actual name.
