QUESTION:
< < A Jew certainly may not take written tests on the Sabbath. Whether he may
take a "skilled exam" depends, I suppose, on the nature of the exam, but I
would assume that most such exams are of a nature that he may not take them
on the Sabbath. (The same applies to most Jewish holidays, incidentally.)> >

ANSWER:
Actually one should not take 'skill exams' on Sabbath EVEN if they don't
involve a violation of Biblical law.

Rabbinically it is prohibited to engage in one's business on Sabbath.
Hence, I can't go to my local grocer and buy something on credit (EVEN if
it is permissable to carry). It seems to me that by similar reasoning I
shouldn't take a skilled exam.
