RABBI ISHMAEL'S 13 EXAMPLE RULES
--------------------------------
Recall that we just showed that the principle of CLIMAX is
really an example of the Rabbi Ishmael GENERAL-DETAIL
style. This rule demands seeing details as examples which
should be generalized.

EXAMPLE: Dt25-04 Dont muzzle an OX while it is THRESHING
RASHI: Dont muzzle ANY ANIMAL while it is WORKING

We therefore spent 3 issues on Biblical
examples which are generalized. We now spend
3 issues on Biblical examples that are specific and
should not be generalized.

We will then be able to summarize these 6 issues as
well as all the examples on Climax into a set of rules
which deal with how Biblical EXAMPLES should be treated.
Along the way we will clarify and classify the many
CLIMAX examples that we have done.

In these 3 issues we deal with Biblical EXAMPLES which
should be specific

#*#*#*#*#*#*#*#*#*# (C) Dr Hendel, 2000 *#*#*#*#*#*#*#*#*#*#

VERSE: Lv01-02c
        Dt06-06a
        Gn02-08a

EXAMPLES
--------
(76) Lv01-02c If you offer sacrifices then offer them from
the Animals--THAT IS, from Cattle and sheep
RASHI: Thus the ONLY animals that can be offered for
	sacrifices are cattle and sheep

(77) Dt06-06a You should love your Lord God (BY)
placing the Torah on your heart and making
             sharp summaries

RASHI: In other words the only way to love God is by
placing the Torah on your heart and making
           sharp summaries *1

NOTES
-----
*1 This Rashi (and the corresonding Rambam Foundations of
Torah 2:1) are sometimes seen as homiletic and not the
simple meaning of the text. But in reality they are
the simple meaning of the text--for this paragraph has
a GENERAL-PARTICULAR form: Love thy Lord thy God BY learning

In other words the idea that God should be loved by learning
is not a philosophical point of view but rather a GRAMMATICAL
point of view---it follows from the form of this Chapter
(Which we state every day in praying).

(78) Gn02-08a
     Gn01-27 And God created Man
Gn02-07:09 And God created man FROM earth and placed
him in the Garden of Eden and placed their trees

RASHI: It **looks** like there are two stories of creation
The 1st creation in Gn01-27 and the 2nd creation in
        Gn02-07:09.

        Actually however, following Rabbi Eliezers
(Son of Rabbi Yosi the Galileean) who had 32 styles
by which to interpret the Bible we see Gn01-27 as a
sort of HEADLINE that HYPERLINKS to Gn02-07 which gives
the story in complete detail (How God made him--where
         he put him etc

In my email list I compare the GENERAL-DETAIL method to
a HEADLINE-STORY method. It is also a good pedagogic method
akin to spiral curriculum
