RABBI ISHMAEL'S 13 EXAMPLE RULES
--------------------------------
Recall that we just showed that the principle of CLIMAX is
really an example of the Rabbi Ishmael GENERAL-DETAIL
style. This rule demands seeing details as examples which
should be generalized.

EXAMPLE: Dt25-04 Dont muzzle an OX while it is THRESHING
RASHI: Dont muzzle ANY ANIMAL while it is WORKING

We therefore spent 3 issues on Biblical
examples which are generalized. We now spend
3 issues on Biblical examples that are specific and
should not be generalized.

We will then be able to summarize these 6 issues as
well as all the examples on Climax into a set of rules
which deal with how Biblical EXAMPLES should be treated.
Along the way we will clarify and classify the many
CLIMAX examples that we have done.

In these 3 issues we deal with Biblical EXAMPLES which
should be specific

#*#*#*#*#*#*#*#*#*# (C) Dr Hendel, 2000 *#*#*#*#*#*#*#*#*#*#

VERSE: Gn02-08a---Repeated from yesterday
        Gn09-11a
        Nu03-06a
        Nu05-12d

EXAMPLES
----------
(78) Gn02-08a----------------------------FROM YESTERDAY
     Gn01-27 And God created Man
Gn02-07:09 And God created man FROM earth and placed
him in the Garden of Eden and placed their trees

RASHI: It **looks** like there are two stories of creation
The 1st creation in Gn01-27 and the 2nd creation in
        Gn02-07:09.

        Actually however, following Rabbi Eliezers
(Son of Rabbi Yosi the Galileean) who had 32 styles
by which to interpret the Bible we see Gn01-27 as a
sort of HEADLINE that HYPERLINKS to Gn02-07 which gives
the story in complete detail (How God made him--where
         he put him etc

In my email list I compare the GENERAL-DETAIL method to
a HEADLINE-STORY method. It is also a good pedagogic method
akin to spiral curriculum.

One main point here is that there are not 2 creations stories
but one creation story that has a HEADLINE and DETAILS

(79) Gn09-11a I will fulfill my CONVENANT with Noach (BY)
placing the rainbow in the clouds as a symbol
that I will not destroy the world
RASHI: Thus the only terms of the convenant is that
God will not destroy the world

(In other words the Biblical phrase
"I will fulfill my convenant" is like a HEADLINE
           while the Biblical phrase
"I will place the rainbow" is the DETAILS)

(80) Nu03-06a & The Levites will SERVE Aaron: (BY)
            Watching the Temple
RASHI: Thus the only service that the levites must do
           is Watch the temple

(In other words the Biblical phrase
"...SERVE AARON " is like a HEADLINE
           while the Biblical phrase
" WATCH THE TEMPLE " is the DETAILS)

(81) Nu05-12d & She DESECRATES her marriage: (BY)
             Sleeping with another man
RASHI: In other words it is only for SLEEPING with
another man that we perform the 'suspected-
wife' ceremony mentioned in Nu05 (Eg if she
desecrated her marriage in some other way by
eg insulting her husband we do not perform
           the ceremony)

(In other words the Biblical phrase
" she desecrates her marriage" is like a HEADLINE
            while the Biblical phrase
"..she sleeps with another man.." are the DETAILS

Still another point of view is that
"She desecrates her marriage" is a GENERAL statement
which **could** have many details such as sleeping
            around, insulting, embarassing, taking money.

The Bible then limits this GENERAL statement of
DESECRATING the marriage, only to the DETAILS of
            SLEEPING with another man)
